Ending Gender-based Violence – International Collaboration and Challenges

Ending Gender-based Violence – International Collaboration and Challenges

The World Solidarity Forum invites you to join our panel discussion event "Ending Gender-based Violence "

Gender-based violence is a phenomenon deeply rooted in gender inequality and remains one of the most notable human rights violations across the world. For decades now, different women’s advocacy groups have worked on drawing more attention to the physical, psychological, and sexual abuse of women and the importance of immediate action to prevent these abuses.
The Istanbul Convention, one of the most advanced conventions in criminal law, operates as the first legal instrument to protect individuals from violence and discrimination. Yet ratification to ensure proper implementation and accountability remains elusive in some European member states, raising issues of harmonization and shared standards.
Although women, young people and refugees are vulnerable to sexual and gender-based violence, little evidence exists concerning gender-based violence against these groups in Europe. Refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants are often at increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence and subsequent ill-health in Europe; yet, European minimum detention and reception facility standards do not address gender-based violence.

World Solidarity Forum believes that it is essential to discuss the existing challenges in shaping a truly comprehensive strategy for tackling gender-based violence in the European Union and in the global scale. Today we will also be discussing the role of organizations at the local, national and supranational level, as a way to move forward and eliminate all forms of gender-based violence.
