Gender equality and honour related violence and oppression - policy making and practice

In the light of the EU Commission’s launch of the Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025, we welcome you to discuss gender equality and honour related violence and oppression - in policy making and practice.

When? On the 27th of May, from 11:00-13:00

Where? Webinar

Why? Honour related violence differs from other forms of men’s violence against women, although it is, in similar ways based norm of men’s superiority to women. The term ‘honour’ refers to a strong patriarchal order where norms for manliness are, to a considerable degree, designed with respect to men’s control and power over the family’s women - and especially of their chastity. To prevent and combat honour related violence and oppression, it is necessary to raise awareness on existing social norms. By doing so first, it will be possible to start questioning them. Several actions have been made by the City of Gothenburg to combat and prevent this matter, as a way of ensuring freedom and human rights.

Leisa Radelicki – Member of Cabinet Helena Dalli (Commissioner for Equality)

Jurgita Pečiūrienė – European Institute for Gender Equality, Gender-based Violence researcher

Jaimie Just – Gender equality and diversity at CCRE-CEMR

Jeanette Stål – Planning officer, Department of human rights, City hall, City of Gothenburg

Katarina Idegård & Linda Hansson – Coordinator and Development Manager honour related violence and oppression, Administration for allocation of social welfare, City of Gothenburg

Lina Lycke – Social Adviser, Children and Youths, City District East, City of Gothenburg

Later this year, we will organise a workshop which follows this webinar. The workshop-session will deepen the discussions and will include knowledge sharing as well as networking possibilities.
