Energy Security in the EU: Responding to the Effects of the Ukraine Invasion

EsadeGeo and the Repsol Foundation are organising a series of two webinars to provide deep analysis of the impacts of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the EU’s energy system and relations.

As a result of the invasion, basic pillars of the EU’s energy security have been intensely questioned and scrutinized, and a significant policy overhaul has been put into motion. On May 18, the European Commission launched the REPowerEU plan, detailing the actions to be taken to end dependence on Russian fossil fuels while also tackling the climate crisis. In this webinar, speakers will discuss the REPowerEU plan, the effects of the war on the EU’s energy security, and to what extent the plan tackles three overarching challenges: affordability of energy, reducing reliance on Russian energy, and accelerating the energy transition towards climate.

Some of the questions that will be addressed include: Does the REPowerEU plan offer a feasible way for the EU to wean itself off Russian energy? Will the proposed measures improve the outlook for EU companies, in particular energy-intensive industries? Are EU member states aligned in their responses to the crisis and are they responding in the best possible way? How is the war affecting the Commission’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets: will it derail the green energy transition or accelerate it?
