Webinar - Digital literacy for practitioners – inspiration from youth work

This webinar will discuss the ins and outs of the digital world and movement of young people. The internet has become an integrated part of people’s everyday lives, especially for the younger generation for who the online environment closely resembles the real world. On the internet you easily find likeminded people, build emotional connections and feel a sense of belonging. This shows that the online world cannot be seen separately from the offline world anymore, it has become a hybrid world. Including the online world in P/CVE approaches has been discussed at several RAN activities throughout 2020, 2021 and the pandemic it was inevitable to move P/CVE work online. Since the younger generations are ‘digital natives’, it posed a challenge for practitioners to keep up with the continuously developing trends, narratives and language online. However, the inclusion of online P/CVE work also provides many opportunities. For example, practitioners can find the target group online with the use of specific P/CVE tools that can identify hotbeds of radicalisation on the internet, the internet offers the opportunity to expose individuals to alternative narratives and opinions outside their echo chambers, and social media offers the opportunity for interaction and gaining insights into the world of young people. In addition to this added value for prevention work, the online environment also offers opportunities for exit work. For example when working with individuals with social phobia or individuals who seek anonymity to overcome stigma, shame and security concerns, online counselling might be a good first step. This webinar aims to disseminate knowledge on digital P/CVE work gathered in previous RAN meetings to a wider audience. The objective is to help practitioners understand the digital world in relation to the offline world and to offer tools and tips on how to include it in their day-to-day P/CVE work.
