Background

The EESC is a fervent defender of multilateralism and a rules-based world order. Its External Relations Section deals with many topics relevant to the broad spectrum covered by the United Nations and its specialised agencies, while many EESC opinions refer to core international principles and regularly cite the United Nations. Additionally, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals are a constant point of reference. A recent EESC high-level mission to the USA put a strong focus on the United Nations. The delegation met among others with the President of the General Assembly, representatives of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and UN Women.

Through this opinion, the EESC will use the expertise of its Members, social partners and civil society organisations, to provide the EU Institutions with a civil society perspective on the European contribution to safeguarding or rather restoring multilateralism and a rules-based order within the United Nations.
