In 2023-2024, EUFIC, along with our collaborators Nutrition Institute (NUTRIS) and Sabri Ülker Foundation, conducted a large-scale consumer survey in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Turkey and the UK to examine consumers’ knowledge about food, nutrition, and their food-related science literacy. This allowed us to discover which food myths are the most popular, where consumers have knowledge and literacy gaps, and to examine cultural differences. The results aim to inform those who work in the areas of food and science literacy to understand consumers’ mindsets better and prioritise their communication topics. This 1-hour webinar is of interest to NGOs and civil society groups, policymakers, health professionals, and researchers working in the fields of food, nutrition, and science literacy. The Q&A starts at 36:40.

A new generation: Syrian children born in Jordan hold onto hope

EU Civil Protection ...
Hussein was only 6 months old when his family fled war-torn Aleppo for the safety of Amman. Since then, his young life has unfolded in Jordan, where he attends a public school alongside Jordanian, Iraqi and other Syrian students. Hussein holds onto the first memories of his early life to capture fragments of a homeland he barely knew. Unlike Hussein, 9-year-olds Ghina and Yahya were never in Syria. To Ghina, Syria is a beautiful land with flowers and a vast blue sea. Yahya imagines Syria as a kite, soaring free in the sky. For over a decade, Jordan has been a beacon of hope for hundreds of thousands of Syrians fleeing war. Today, the country hosts over 640,000 registered Syrian refugees, half of whom are children. Since 2011, over 212,000 Syrian refugees have been born in Jordan. The first generation of Syrian refugees knows no other home, a number that grows each month, with an average 120,000 new births registered in 2023. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day provides an opportunity for us all to raise awareness to address and prevent the abuse of older people. #WEAAD #WEAAD2024 #AdultSafeguarding @marybutlertd1705 TRANSCRIPT: Today I'm proud to wear the purple ribbon to support World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2024. The theme this year is 'An Uncomfortable Truth: Sexual Violence of Older People'. While it is a challenging and sensitive subject, we must talk about it and raise awareness so that we can tackle it. We have learned very painfully that sexual abuse of older people can happen anywhere, including where they live. Sexual violence is never the victim's or the survivor's fault. The HSE is completing a new sexual safety framework and I look forward to the early launch of this important initiative. Earlier this year, I published a new draft policy on adult safeguarding for the sector and launched a public consultation on it. The new policy will re-emphasise that everyone, regardless of their medical condition or age, must be believed and supported when they report abuse. If you are or have been a victim of sexual violence, help and support is available by contacting the freephone 24-Hour National Sexual Violence Helpline at 1800 7788 88. Also, anyone who has a concern about the safeguarding of an older person should contact the HSE on 1800 700 700 to access advice and support. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day provides an opportunity for us all to promote a better understanding of sexual and other abuse of older persons. Look after yourself.

This webinar explores the intersection between health and sustainability within current food systems research. Often, research efforts primarily focus on one aspect like sustainability, while the health aspect is overlooked. For instance, products marketed as environmentally friendly (e.g. meat substitutes) may not always align with health recommendations. Thus, it remains a challenge to effectively balance sustainability and health considerations in food system research. This event was jointly organized by the OECD and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies on 19 March 2024, in Brussels and online. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the critical need for health systems to be resilient against major disruptions. Despite the significant impact that crises such as pandemics, climate change effects, geopolitical conflicts, financial collapses or digital failures can have on economies and societies, policy makers in the health sector lack tools to test how their health systems would cope with extreme stress. This workshop is designed to explain the new handbook for resilience testing and provide actionable insights and strategies for fortifying health systems against future challenges. Speakers European Commission: Sandra Gallina (DG SANTE) and Nathalie Berger (DG REFORM) European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies: Josep Figueras, Jonathan Cylus, Julia Zimmermann, Marina Karanikolos and Suszy Lessof OECD Health Division: Francesca Colombo, Frederico Guanais, Maria Ines Francisco Viva and Philip Haywood WHO Regional Office for Europe: Hans Kluge Country perspectives: Dirk Ramaekers, Belgium Elizabeth Diago, Spain Gintaras Kacevičius, Lithuania Liina-Kaisa Tynkkynen, Finland Lilian Vildiridi, Greece Michael Stoto, USA Nestor Alfonzo Santamaria, OECD High Level Risk Forum https://eurohealthobservatory.who.int/news-room/events/item/2024/03/19/default-calendar/strengthening-health-systems-a-practical-handbook-for-resilience-testing

EIT Health
To unlock the potential of women in digital sectors, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology and its Innovation Communities created the Girls Go Circular Programme, which provides online learning centred on the circular economy to equip young European girls with crucial digital and entrepreneurial skills. Recognising that the gender gap in STEM is adding to the known talent shortage in healthcare, EIT Health has introduced specific health modules aligned with EIT’s Deep Tech Talent Initiative pledge to have one million people skilled in deep tech by 2025. Empowering girls between the ages of 14 – 19 not only serves the individuals but has a ripple effect on communities and the broader economy. As these girls gain vital digital skills and insights into the circular economy they become ambassadors of change, paving the way for increased gender representation in STEM fields. Our short film, produced by BBC StoryWorks Commercial productions, tells this important story through the lens of Girls Go Circular graduate, Kelly, who is now, thanks in part to Girls Go Circular, studying electrical and computer engineering at university. We hear from secondary school teacher Evgenia on why she championed the programme. Through Kelly and Evgenia’s eyes, discover why Girls Go Circular is vital, how it works, the life-changing benefits it brings to students and the wider societal impact. Watch this compelling story of how our pan-European online learning programme, funded by EIT, opened Kelly’s career horizons in STEM and is helping build an inclusive digital future for Europe!

Is It Possible To Predict The Future? - The Medical Futurist

The Medical Futurist
Despite the fact that the word “future” is singular in almost every language, there are such things as ‘futures’. We often discuss the future as if it were a single predetermined path. However, in reality, there are numerous potential futures that could unfold. This concept is crucial because it opens up the possibility of actively shaping the future we desire, rather than passively accepting a single inevitable outcome. And how do futurists do this in practice? Though three steps: 1) We articulate and define the grand visions that could materialize within these potential futures. 2) We help discern which options seem most promising, impactful, or beneficial, which hold great significance particularly in important fields like healthcare and medicine. 3) We do backcasting to determine the steps we need to take today to reach those desired future outcomes. Essentially, the future isn't set in stone, but rather a branching tree of potential outcomes influenced by our choices and actions today. This understanding empowers us to make informed decisions that can steer us towards a more desirable future.

Today I want to speak to you about the vast network of services providing drug and alcohol treatment across Ireland. The network includes 442 services in receipt of public funding, and from today, for the first time, they are all accessible via an interactive online map. This is a project carried out in partnership between the Department of Health and the Health Research Board and is designed to make information about vital services easily accessible to those who may need it. You'll find it on the website, drugsandalcohol.ie As you can see, it's easy to use and clearly identifies the various types of services available all over the country, including residential and community services. This online tool is for you, for people in your community, and people close to you who may be impacted by drug and alcohol addiction. It will also assist the newly established HSE Health Regions by enabling more informed decision making and planning for drug and alcohol services into the future. As Minister for Public Health, Wellbeing, and the National Drugs Strategy, I am committed to supporting the implementation of the national drugs strategy, and this initiative illustrates how we're working to reduce the harm caused by addiction. I commend the Health Research Board for their work on this excellent resource and I hope it provides very valuable support in helping those who need it to take that first step towards recovery.

This evidence is instrumental in the efforts to materialize the Astana Declaration and to strengthen political momentum towards universal health coverage (UHC). The best evidence is generated through implementation research, country case studies, leadership-oriented training, and partnerships. Despite progress made to generate PHC intelligence that is contextualized and policy-oriented, countries and regions need innovative ways to learn from each other about the PHC approach. Various global products, resources and initiatives have been developed to respond to this need, including: - Implementing the Primary Health Care Approach: A Primer – global evidence on PHC implementation and a guide on the “how” of PHC, to help policy-makers make the case for investing in primary care, deliver change in practice and move towards UHC. - Primary Health Care Country Case Study Compendium - a global web-based search engine for finding and filtering PHC country case studies. - Leadership Course on PHC: A comprehensive 80-hour course delivered through a digital learning platform equipping leaders to drive PHC-oriented health system transformations These products will be presented during a hybrid side event of the 77th World Health Assembly in Geneva on Monday 27 May, organised by the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Health of Spain. 28-May-2024. The @HSEIreland Safer Nightlife Programme is at four festivals in 2024. This harm reduction initiative, supported by An Garda Síochána, includes Back of house drug testing, enabling teams to identify high-risk substances and issue health warnings to festival-goers. Colm Burke TD, Minister of State with responsibility for Public Health, Wellbeing and the National Drugs Strategy. TRANSCRIPT: Hello. As Minister of State with responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy, it gives me great pleasure to give my full support to the HSE Safer Nightlife Programme for the festival period in 2024. This programme builds on the success of previous HSE harm reduction initiatives aimed at reaching people who use drugs as part of the night-time economy and at festivals. We have seen, in recent times, that drug trends can be unpredictable. While it is always safer not to use drugs, we must protect the health and safety of the people who may choose to do so. That's why my priority is to strengthen harm reduction measures, such as drug monitoring. Budget 2024 includes additional funding for the formation of an Early Warning System in partnership with the Health Research Board, strengthening our ability to review and respond to drug trends. This builds on previous funding for the expansion of community-based services as part of the community services enhancement fund. Harm reduction measures, including this year's Safer Nightlife Programme, are an essential component in our efforts to reduce drug harm. This programme is a great example of successful cross sector collaboration between departments and agencies, illustrating the health-led approach to our National Drugs Strategy. I strongly support the work and look forward to meeting with the teams providing health interventions at festivals over the summer period. Thank you.

Smoking kills around 4,500 people in Ireland every year and causes an enormous range of preventable illnesses. By raising the minimum age of sale of tobacco products to 21, we can protect young people from starting an addictive and harmful behaviour. See: https://www.gov.ie/en/press-release/4d48a-ministers-for-health-announce-government-approval-to-raise-the-age-of-sale-of-tobacco-to-21/ TRANSCRIPT: Well, today I'm going to talk to you about smoking. Every year, around 4,500 people die from smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke in Ireland. Smoking causes 13% of all cancers and contributes to many preventable illnesses including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, eye diseases, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. It's also responsible for 5% of hospital inpatient admissions. While we cannot put a price on a life or health, it is estimated that the financial cost of smoking is €10.6 billion every year. Now, smoking rates have declined in Ireland in the last decade, but it's still at a very high level of 18% among adults. That's 18% too high. Even more unacceptable is that our smoking rate among children is 5%. This should be zero. 20 years since Ireland's ban on indoor smoking, we're still working to protect the population from the harmful effects of these products. We want to see the minimum age of sale of tobacco products raised to 21. Evidence shows that the years from 18 to 21 are a time of high risk for becoming a smoker, so this measure will help bring us closer to that goal of a tobacco-free Ireland. Of course, it's never too late to quit smoking. Support is always at hand. If you're a smoker, please take that first step today and contact the HSE's 'Quit' service. Your health will thank you for it.

Objective: The main aim of this webinar is to inform discussions on drug consumption rooms (DCRs), by reviewing current models and their characteristics. We will present three well-established examples from different European countries and discuss possible future scenarios with the speakers. Background: In a previous webinar, we learnt that DCRs are fixed or mobile spaces in which people who use drugs are provided with sterile drug use equipment, and can use illicit drugs under the supervision of trained staff. These services exist in several European countries, Australia, Canada, Mexico and the USA, and are usually located in previous open drug scene areas. The primary goal of DCRs is to reduce morbidity and mortality by providing a safer drug-use environment, as well as training, for clients. Other objectives may include providing a conduit to other care services and reducing public nuisance. Reference will be made in the webinar to an EMCDDA miniguide on drug consumption rooms. In conversation with: - Roberto Perez Gayo, European Network of Drug Consumption Rooms - Ester Aranda, Asociación Bienestar y Desarrollo - Viktor Mravčík, Podane Ruce - Marylin Pohler, Ragazza e.V. Chairperson: Marie Jauffret-Roustide (INSERM). Opening and closing remarks: Alexis Goosdeel, EMCDDA Director. Format: EMCDDA opening remarks, panellists’ questions, guided discussion, Q&A. Tell me something about your job that’s obvious to you, but it’s not obvious to others. I’ll go first. The peer-review process, a cornerstone of scientific publishing, necessitates the contribution of significant expertise and time from other scientists on a voluntary basis (for free). This ensures the quality and integrity of research before publication. However, the financial burden of publication itself often falls on the authors, and access to the published work can be further restricted by paywalls. This creates an interesting dynamic where the dissemination of knowledge rests heavily on the pro bono efforts of researchers. It underscores the vital, yet often unseen, role scientists play in maintaining the scientific record. If all of a sudden all scientists stopped working for free, the world of research would collapse.

International Day of the Nurse celebrates the incredible impact and contribution of nurses and of student nurses here in Ireland and around the world. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to your patients every single day. #InternationalDayoftheNurse @HSEIreland TRANSCRIPT: Hi everyone and Happy International Nurses Day. Today is a really important opportunity to celebrate. To celebrate the incredible impact and contribution of nurses and of student nurses here in Ireland and right around the world. Your dedication and compassion... your skill and professionalism and commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of so many people... that work does not go unnoticed. This year's theme is 'Our Nurses, Our Future, the Economic Power of Care', and it really resonates with me as Minister for Health. Nurses, as you know, will continue to play a vital and a central role in shaping the future of healthcare in Ireland. It's been my great honour to support nursing in Ireland with a lot more funding, big increases in the workforce and advances in the opportunities available to nurses. We're continuing to increase our undergraduate training nursing numbers. In the coming years, I'm determined to maintain and to build on the momentum we've achieved. Not just more places, but also additional routes into nursing. There are now more than 85,000 nurses and midwives registered to practice in Ireland. The number of registrants is increasing every year. I'm very aware that nurses educated abroad make up a big part of our workforce and play an essential role in our health services here in Ireland. I want to say that Ireland will always have internationally trained nurses as part of our workforce. The investment and the opportunities will continue to reflect the importance of this diversity. Nursing continues to be a very attractive career, one that offers more exciting career opportunities in both hospitals and community settings than ever before. And we can see this across leadership roles, specialist roles and advanced practice roles. I'm delighted to see that the Chief Nursing Officer has now launched the strategy for professions. It fully supports further investment, increased productivity, improved working conditions, and the ambitious reform agenda that we have. So thank you, to all the nurses to the Student Nurses everywhere in Ireland for your unwavering commitment to your patients every single day. Have a great International Nurses Day.

Since the last EU elections in 2019 Health has was for several years at the very top of everyone's agenda. But after the Pandemic rather than learn the lessons from that period Health has fallen down the EU Agenda, particularly as other crisis take center stage. Department of Health
Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD. TRANSCRIPT: Hi everyone. Today is International Day of the Midwife. The theme for today is about Sustainable Midwifery, promoting sustainable practices that prioritise the wellbeing of both mums and babies while minimising the environmental impact. Midwives deliver safe and sustainable health services. An example of this is the midwifery-led models of care that are being established right across the country. I want to take today as an opportunity to acknowledge and to thank all of our incredible midwives, our maternity health care assistants and our student midwives all over Ireland and indeed all around the world. As a profession, you have continued to support the implementation of the National Maternity Strategy. Midwives plays such an important role in the lives of women throughout their pregnancy and in baby's early days leading on delivery of individualised woman centred care. Importantly, for me, as Minister for Health, midwives are essential to shaping the future of women and infants' health services in Ireland...and we have work to do. To support this, I gave a commitment that I would appoint a midwifery advisor here in the Department. And I'm delighted to say that I appointed that advisor, Sinéad, in November of last year. Sinéad's playing an important role - and will continue to play an important role - here in the Department and with all of you in the future development of midwifery services. This includes the postnatal hubs, the perinatal mental health teams out of course women's health. Last year, the Nursing and Midwifery Board published its State of the Register Report. It showed an increase in the number of practicing and patient-facing midwives on the register - which is fantastic to see. We need to continue to collect more data from midwifery to inform practice, workforce and ongoing improvements. So, thank you again to all midwives, maternity healthcare assistants on to all student midwives. Thank you for your unwavering commitment and care. And have a great day.

2 May 2024
Department of Health
1st May, 2024: Safe Access Zones legislation has been completed in the Seanad and will now to go the President for his consideration. TRANSCRIPT: Hi, everyone. We've just passed the Safe Access Zone legislation. It'll now go up to the President for his consideration and hopefully for his signature. Everyone has the right to access their medical care in private and to be treated with dignity and respect. We know that demonstrations have caused distress. They've intimidated and they've sought to deter women and staff from providing Termination of Pregnancy services. That's why we're enacting this legislation. The legislation will help safeguard access by designating 100 metre buffer zones around GP practices, hospitals and clinics. As soon as the President signs the Bill, I will commence it at the earliest opportunity. This will make it illegal to harass, to insult or to seek to influence those attending these clinics or the staff working in them. I'd like to say thanks to the large majority in the Oireachtas for passing this legislation and also thanks to Together for Safety for your work in this area. Today, we have another important step in improving services for women and for couples. I'll update you further as soon as we commence this important legislation. Thank you.

food Food for thought: Listeria monocytogenes through the food factory with Oleksii Omelchenko
Food for thought: Listeria monocytogenes through the food factory with Oleksii Omelchenko
25 Apr 2024
FoodStandardsAgency
Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is the third-leading cause of death from foodborne pathogens and is associated with contamination of food at production facilities. Biofilm formation is one of the mechanisms that Lm possess to survive food industry disinfectants and persist in manufacturing environments. Prolonged exposure to sub-inhibitory concentrations of the commonly applied disinfectant benzalkonium chloride (BC) results in emergence of BC tolerant Lm strains. However, there is limited understanding of how Lm evolve in the context of biofilms in response to sub-inhibitory concentrations of BC. Biofilm evolution model was then used, which pairs prolonged exposure to sub-inhibitory BC concentrations with whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to identify mutations in genes/pathways that improve the overall fitness of Lm in the context of biofilm formation and tolerance towards BC. Key genetic traits correlating to evolution were identified using a range of bioinformatic tools. Currently, Oleksii and colleagues are in the process of connecting phenotypic and genotypic data to identify more genes/pathways responsible for improved fitness and increased tolerance to BC. === Biography === Oleksii is working towards his PhD at Quadram institute, where he is investigating how Listeria monocytogenes adapts to the common stresses of food factory environments to establish highly resilient reservoirs. Before this Oleksii obtained an MRes qualification from Imperial College, where he completed two projects. In the first project he investigated the effects of broad-spectrum antibiotics on the production of metabolites by gut microbiota and in the second he studied toxin-inner tube interactions in T6SS. Oleksii's first research experience comes from his placement year at the University of Barcelona where he was investigating the effects of transcription elongation factors on the production of biofilms in Salmonella. === #FoodForThought #FoodborneIllness #Listeria

On World Immunisation Week, as we reflect on the lifesaving impact of vaccines worldwide, the Chief Medical Officer is asking you to check that you and your children are up to date with your vaccines. See https://www.immunisation.ie/ Vaccines protect us all. #EveryDoseCounts TRANSCRIPT: This week is World Immunisation Week, an opportunity to reflect on the importance of our vaccination programmes which protects us against serious diseases. Globally, in the past 50 years, vaccines have saved almost 154 million lives. That’s six people every minute for five decades. Vaccinations have eradicated smallpox, reduced polio by 99% and reduced infant deaths by 40%. And they are evolving all the time. Now, we have a new vaccine that can prevent cancers and we hope to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040. In Ireland, the childhood immunisation programme provides children with a range of vaccines, including the MMR vaccine. This is particularly important now, as measles cases have increased in Ireland in recent months, so please get your vaccine if you are eligible. We have also seen an increase in pertussis or whooping cough. So, I strongly recommend all pregnant women to get your free vaccine which offers vital protection for newborn babies in those first few months. In the past few years, with the emergence of COVID, we've seen how new vaccines are incredibly effective in reducing the risk of serious illness and death. This week, I want to remind all those aged 80 years or over and others who are eligible to top up your protection with the COVID Spring booster. I'd also like to remind parents of first year children that some routine vaccines are being offered by school vaccination teams, so keep an eye out for the HSE Consent Pack in your child's schoolbag. We get vaccinated not just for ourselves and for our children, but to protect those around us too. If you want to know more about vaccinations available for you and your family, go to immunisation.ie And remember, every dose counts. Thank you.
