For Europe to move towards a competitive #bioeconomy, is it is essential that #biorefinery technologies developed in the lab and at pilot scale are upscaled and deployed at an industrial scale. #Industry and #policy makers must work together to create commercial pathways to this greener future – but how? This interactive event held on 17 February 2021 brought together researchers, industry leaders and policy makers to discuss how the European bioeconomy can take green technology from idea to deployment and who needs to do what to make this happen. Agenda 07:20 Introductory address - Carlo Pettinelli, Director for Chemicals and Consumer Industries, European Commission DG GROW 19:06 Processes4Planet: teaming up 10 industrial sectors for climate neutral solutions - Angels Orduña, Executive Director, A.SPIRE RESEARCH TOPIC 1 - FEEDSTOCK AVAILABILITY 38:40 Virtual Pyrolysis Plant Locations: Availability and quality of biomass - Amanda Kozlo, Capax Biobased Development 50:54 Agroforestry residues potential for the European bioeconomy - Lars Wietschel, University of Augsburg RESEARCH TOPIC 2 – INNOVATIVE CONVERSION PROCESSES 01:08:33 The role of shared pilot facilities in the deployment of biorefinery concepts - Karel de Winter, Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant 01:19:38 State of the art in fast pyrolysis oil fractionation - Bert van de Beld, BTG Biomass Technology Group RESEARCH TOPIC 3 – BIOBASED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT 01:37:28 Resins and moulding compounds from pyrolytic lignin - Melike Bayram, Hexion 01:46:25 New Biophenolic resins and biopolyesterpolyols based on biomass - Aitor Barrio, Tecnalia 01:59:01 Wood modification formulations from pyrolytic sugars - Adam Turi, Foreco PANEL 1 02:11:21 From idea to deployment - overcoming market and technical barriers to upscaling Panellists Gerhard Muggen, Managing Director, BTG Bioliquids Frank Duersen, Head of the Future & Sustainability, RAMPF Gianluca Gemignani, Technical Assistant, Collanti Concorde Luis Alberto Otero, Head of Innovation, Foresa Technologies Moderator Claire Skentelbery, Director General, EuropaBio PANEL 2 02:56:01 Rollout of biorefinery technologies - policy perspective Panellists Tomasz Calikowski, Policy Officer, European Commission DG RTD Claire Skentelbery, Director General, EuropaBio Richard Platt, Managing Consultant, E4tech Moderator Karel de Winter, Head of Technology Development, Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant 03:00:57 Policy keynote: How policy can support the rollout of biorefinery technologies Richard Platt, Managing Consultant, E4tech The projects The event was organised by two EU-funded SPIRE projects, Bio4Products (https://bio4products.eu/) and Rehap (https://www.rehap.eu.com/), both successful in identifying biomass availability and developing innovative new conversion processes and bio-based products. The projects have received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreements number 723070 and 723670 respectively.
