World Elder Abuse Awareness Day provides an opportunity for us all to raise awareness to address and prevent the abuse of older people. #WEAAD #WEAAD2024 #AdultSafeguarding @marybutlertd1705 TRANSCRIPT: Today I'm proud to wear the purple ribbon to support World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2024. The theme this year is 'An Uncomfortable Truth: Sexual Violence of Older People'. While it is a challenging and sensitive subject, we must talk about it and raise awareness so that we can tackle it. We have learned very painfully that sexual abuse of older people can happen anywhere, including where they live. Sexual violence is never the victim's or the survivor's fault. The HSE is completing a new sexual safety framework and I look forward to the early launch of this important initiative. Earlier this year, I published a new draft policy on adult safeguarding for the sector and launched a public consultation on it. The new policy will re-emphasise that everyone, regardless of their medical condition or age, must be believed and supported when they report abuse. If you are or have been a victim of sexual violence, help and support is available by contacting the freephone 24-Hour National Sexual Violence Helpline at 1800 7788 88. Also, anyone who has a concern about the safeguarding of an older person should contact the HSE on 1800 700 700 to access advice and support. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day provides an opportunity for us all to promote a better understanding of sexual and other abuse of older persons. Look after yourself.

From the first day of the Russian invasion, the EU stood up for Ukraine. Currently, the EU is hosting more than 4 million Ukrainian refugees. And so far, it organised the delivery of unprecedented humanitarian, financial and military assistance both directly from the EU and from Member States as well, reaching almost €100 billion, including €32 billion in military assistance. Through the new Ukraine Facility, the EU will deliver another €50 billion over the next four years, to help provide basic services – keep schools open, pay salaries and pensions, while Ukraine’s people continue to fight back against the invader. This video breaks down the help provided for Ukraine so far and reaffirms the unshakable support for Ukraine, for as long as it is necessary. Lunch Session (Fireside Chat): Disaster Risk Management and Food – Lessons from the Field ランチセッション:災害と食~現場の経験から This fireside chat will shed light on the nexus between natural disasters and food. Experiences in Japan show that securing a nutritionally balanced food/meal in the aftermath of natural disasters is important for communities to build back better. However, often people hit by natural disasters survive on rations that are heavily skewed to carbohydrates, without much protein and fresh vegetables. This has caused many, particularly the elderly, to fall sick, hindering reconstruction efforts. Speakers include a food industry professional with a long track record in developing nutritionally balanced, ready-to-eat meals with long shelf-life, and an expert in the delivery of emergency relief aid, including post-disaster operations after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The session will be moderated by a former senior official of the World Health Organization with extensive knowledge on global health issues. Organized By: NH Foods Ltd, with support by the International University of Health and Welfare and the Japanese Ministry of Defense 日本ハム株式会社(協力:国際医療福祉大学、防衛省)

digital AI for health: Applying AI to model and understand multimorbidity
AI for health: Applying AI to model and understand multimorbidity
14 Jun 2024
AI for Good
Multimorbidity, i.e. the co-occurrence of multiple chronic or acute conditions within a single host, represents one of the largest global health challenges of the 21st century and could become the next global pandemic. As people live longer and the incidence of chronic diseases continues to rise, the prevalence of multimorbidity is reaching unprecedented levels. New evidence suggests that multimorbidity may emerge not through incidental accumulation of independent diseases, but instead begins as a single-organ injury that proceeds to incite damage in secondary organs through dysregulated inter-organ communication. With the recent revolutions in measurement technologies (e.g., spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics), multi-organ chip technologies and AI, we are now at a stage where we start gaining an advanced understanding of homeostatic and disturbed inter-organ communication to not only manage, but to therapeutically target, predict and even prevent multimorbidity. Longitudinal biosamples from well-characterized patient cohorts and data obtained from pilot, hypothesis-generating studies, as well as technological advances in multi-omics-based profiling, microphysiological systems, high-resolution imaging, and explainable AI now make it possible to comprehensively capture and model aberrant signals leading to multimorbidity in an explorative and hypothesis-driven manner. This workshop discusses the potentials of these technological breakthroughs for gaining a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind diseases of the 21th century, such as multimorbidity. In this video, Erkki Pöytäniemi explains how mushroom cultivation works in practice. Forest cultivation of shiitake mushrooms makes efficient use of forestry by-products such as small-diameter low value trees from thinning which are normally used as bioenergy or pulp trees. These tree logs can also be used as a cultivation substrate for shiitake mushrooms (and also other mushroom species such as chaga, reishi (also known as lingzhi) and oyster mushrooms) and in this case the added value per tree log can be markedly higher. Another advantage is that forests which are normally only used for wood production, now also produce edible mushrooms. In this way, forest farming can be an ecologically friendly way of food production as it increases land use efficiency. This video was produced in the context of the FOODLEVERS project which ran in 2020-2024. Find out more about the project at https://www.foodlevers.org/

This week, the European Elections reminded us how privileged we are to make our choices freely at the ballot box.  We participated in a very successful and important Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin, where we signed new financing agreements to mobilise more than one billion euros for Ukrainian SMEs, repair critical infrastructure in cities like hospitals, local transport, schools and kindergartens and bring to Ukraine the EU flagship technical assistance programme, to get projects off the ground more quickly. We are also working in a 300 million pan-European export guarantee to mobilize the private sector and especially SMEs trading with Ukraine. This week we announced financing to improve safety on Czechia’s railway network, for green projects and cultural activities in Malta, for green social and digital projects in Spain, and technical help for hydro power projects in Bulgaria. Outside the EU, in Tunisia, we signed new investments for small businesses, clean energy, transport and education. We also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the European Investment Fund, our risk capital subsidiary, that specializes in support to SMEs and start-ups and has supported some 2 million European businesses over the years. The European Single Supervisory Mechanism at 10: Lessons learnt and challenges ahead. Welcome Mario Quagliariello, ECB In 2024 the European Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) will celebrate its 10th anniversary. Taking over direct banking supervision of the largest banks across the euro area in November 2014 was a crucial milestone to build the banking union. The need for a centralised banking supervision in Europe was a direct lesson learnt from the great financial crisis and the subsequent sovereign debt crisis in order to rebuild trust in the banking sector and increase the resilience of the financial system within the monetary union.

Free movement – the right to live, study, work and retire anywhere in the EU – is possibly the most tangible achievement of European integration. With the establishment of the Schengen area in 1995, checks were abolished at the EU's internal borders. Today, the Schengen area includes most EU countries, except for Ireland, which maintains an opt-out and operates its own common travel area with the UK, as well as Cyprus, which is currently undergoing the evaluation process to assess its readiness to join the area. Four non-EU countries - Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein - have also joined the Schengen area. The development of Europe and its regions is threatened by the scarcity of an essential resource: water. Water is a common good and water solidarity is the basis for the progress of territories in the face of problems such as drought. Andalusia is one of the regions most affected by drought. For this reason, the Andalusian regional government has implemented plans to ensure that wastewater is no longer a waste product, but an additional resource. In the last five years, the production of recycled water in Andalusia has quadrupled. Good environmental practices and the water revolution underway since 2019 are helping the region to recover. Watch the video with Juanma Moreno Bonilla, president of the regional government of Andalusia, to learn more about how water regeneration have direct benefits for local and regional communities. Introducing Binaifer Nowrojee, Open Society President
13 Jun 2024
Open Society Foundations
With over 30 years of experience dedicated to justice and human rights, Binaifer Nowrojee leads the Open Society Foundations into a new chapter as president of the organization. Raised in Kenya, Binaifer drew inspiration from her father’s career as a lawyer who defended those who suffered under the dictatorship of Daniel arap Moi. She spent 10 years of her career as a human rights researcher, working extensively in Rwanda to document the violence against women during the genocide. Her work led to the recognition that sexual violence can be a crime of genocide, an important legal precedent in international law. Her work for Open Society in Africa and Asia has driven meaningful change, and her lived experiences inform her vision for the future. “I find my greatest inspiration is from watching and meeting and seeing people who take incredible risks to actually speak out and stand up for what’s right.” #OpenSociety #BinaiferNowrojee #HumanRights

Finance Watch
Access to financial services for individuals is a prerequisite for social inclusion, a decent standard of living during working and retirement age and protection in case of unexpected life events. Unaffordable offers and discriminatory practices are some of the barriers preventing many citizens from accessing the basic financial services needed to participate in modern life. EU policymakers have a responsibility to remove these barriers and make the retail financial services market safe and fair. Rules are also needed to help citizens avoid over-indebtedness and offer a way out for those who find themselves in this difficult situation. And all of this must extend to the digital world. Through our retail and financial inclusion workstream, we are dedicated to bridging the gap to financial inclusion and helping to shape a financial system that is safe, fair, and empowers people. This is no small task, to succeed, we need your support. Get involved now on https://www.finance-watch.org/about/members/become-a-member/ and take part in our Finance Watch working group meetings. They are an opportunity to hear from our members across Europe on the real challenges facing citizens, and for our members to hear from our in-house experts on the financial legislation currently on the table at EU level. AI for Good
Governments around the world have made it a priority to bridge the digital divide through connectivity. Today, still 33% of the global population remains unconnected. That is 2.6 billion people who do not have a voice online and whose voices are not reflected in the data and algorithms used to feed AI. In addition, access to the technology is still far from equal, and much of the global workforce will need to reskill in the upcoming years as a result of implementing AI. What are governments and businesses’ best practices and solutions to enable digital inclusion and make sure that AI fully reflects humanity? With digital transformation across continents and the democratization of Gen-AI, how can technology be a catalyst for good? How can we address challenges such as bias, social inequalities, disinformation, or potential risks on the Internet with the rise of AI? In this workshop, we will explore creative ideas, policy recommendations, and global solutions to ensure that the international AI governance framework leads to a truly diverse and inclusive offline and online world.
