Recharging the European Electric Vehicle Market:

Meeting Infrastructure and Standardisation Challenges

With strong public support and an encouraging prevailing wind from within the EU, Europe stands on the brink of a revolution in motoring. The Commission has put electric vehicles at the heart of its commitment to the long-term goal of reducing carbon emissions by 60 per cent within the transport sector by 2050. Vice-President Siim Kallas has called for a 50 per cent reduction in the use of conventional cars – petrol and diesel – by 2030, and for a complete phase-out of such vehicles by 2050.Yet, at present, significant obstacles remain in the way of a fully functioning electric vehicle market in Europe. First among them is the need for a truly European-wide infrastructure, ensuring that European citizens will be able to use their vehicles consistently throughout the continent. Similarly, the standardisation of the power network and re-charge systems remains high on the policy agenda. The ultimate goal is to create worldwide standards to avoid market fragmentation and to reduce overall costs, thus, stimulating the European car industry to prosper globally. This special international symposium seeks to move the current electric vehicle debate forward and guide participants through the challenges that lie ahead in the development of a standardised European electric vehicle market. The symposium will also consider the implications for city planners of an expanded market-share for electric vehicles, as well as ongoing research and development advances, EU subsidies and improvements to supply from the power grid.Public Policy Exchange welcomes the participation of all automotive industry partners, responsible authorities and stakeholders. The symposium will support the exchange of ideas and encourage delegates to engage in thought-provoking topical debate, providing input and recommendations to the decision makers at EU level.
