International Competition Policy

This two day international symposium on Competition Policy will provide an invaluable opportunity for both regulators and representatives of industry to share best practice relating to regulation and competition policies.

The discussion will follow four main thematic strands. On the first day of the symposium, the first of these strands will look at the most important players in the field – The US Federal Trade Commission, the US Department of Justice, and the European Commission. The second strand will examine the technical spectrum of competition policy, from dealing with cartels, through market dominance, to merger control and onto the healthy operation of normal competitive markets. Strategies for interaction and intervention in these will all be examined, as will the case in each instance for not taking action. On the second day, the scope of economic competition policy will be discussed in the context of intrinsically uncompetitive sectors, focusing on the financial services sector, the health sector, utilities and universities. The fourth strand will look into issues such as the capacity of the developing world to implement and cope with international competition policy, as well as national competition policies, with a case study from one of the main emerging economies.
