Sustainable Cities

Foundations and our urban future

Some 500 foundations and partners will convene in Copenhagen, Denmark for the 24th EFC Annual General Assembly and Conference, entitled ‘Sustainable Cities: Foundations and our urban future’.It is estimated that more than half the world’s population lives in cities, with a further 2 billion people expected to become city or urban dwellers in the next 30 years. This rapid growth in urbanization presents many challenges, not least concerning housing, employment, education, cultural heritage, mobility, urban planning and the environment.Foundations in Europe are no strangers to these challenges and are in fact intrinsically linked to cities and urban areas across the continent. Their independence and standing allow them to inject creative energy into developing more sustainable, socially and culturally inclusive, and competitive towns and cities for future generations. As a smart and innovative city, Copenhagen will provide a perfect backdrop to learn about, share and debate issues surrounding urban development and sustainability as well as a range of other pressing topics of interest to the sector. The conference will feature a keynote address by George Soros, Founder and Chairman, Open Society Foundations.
