is a great pleasure to present you the first ESGO State of the Art Conference: Follow Up in Gynaecological Malignancies held on September , 11-13 September, 2014 in Torino, Italy.The management after the end of the treatments of the patients treated for a solid tumour in general and for gynaecological diseases in specific, is not well codified but its costs are high (estimated 70% of the total cost from the diagnosis to the death of the patients) and its impact on overall survival and quality of life is not yet quantified. The available Guidelines agree to suggest a minimalistic follow up protocol scheduling only the clinical control and performing imaging procedure or other procedures only when signs and symptoms of recurrences appear.The available literature is of low quality and the strength of the recommendations is weak. There are few RCTs but all in favour for a minimalistic follow up protocol. Despite this, a wide variety of approaches exist among different gynaecological oncologic units while waiting for some ongoing RCTs and considering new therapeutic options available (e.g. new molecules, different roles for surgery etc).While acknowledging the controversy around this topic, the aim of the meeting is to give a clear and strong message to the audience.Carefully selected speakers are expected to give a balanced overview of state of the art based on the current level of evidence in each disease. Sessions will be closed by co-Chairs who will give clear indications of follow up, rules and rationale. It is also expected that outcomes may identify uncovered areas for further research and need of trials. Final synthesis of the conference will be further worked out into a scientific paper and published.We sincerely do hope that this new initiative will attract your full attention and together we will launch a new tradition of single topic conferences under the flag of the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology.
