Supporting cycling in cities: Successful policies and measures

In order to reduce energy consumption in the transport sector and for cities to become friendlier, healthier and more sustainable, effective policies and measures are needed to limit the use of motorised individual transport.

Based on the results of projects co-financed by the European Commission's Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) programme, the objective of this workshop is to present and discuss policies and measures that have increased the modal share of cycling in different European cities and discuss successful examples and their impacts. The workshop is organised in the form of key notes, short presentations of concrete actions from cities and a moderated discussion regarding possible steps for cities to increase the modal share of cycling and replicate the presented examples.Target groupsStaff working on mobility in municipalities or regional authoritiesElected officials of municipalities and regions Energy and mobility expertsMembers of the European ParliamentEuropean institutions The workshop is organised by the European Commission’s EASME (Intelligent Energy Europe) in collaboration with the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) and EUROCITIES, the network of major European cities. AgendaWelcome and introduction – Mr Stephan Renner, European Commission EASME H2020 Energy.EC Policy overviewRecent policy initiatives by DG MOVE relevant to cycling – Ms Madeleine Kelly-Tychtl, European Commission MOVE, Clean transport & sustainable urban mobilitySuccessful support measuresIntermodal transport solutions: Combining bicycles and trains – Mr Bruno Van Zeebroeck, Transport & Mobility Leuven (TML)Cyclelogistics: Shifting urban freight to bicycles –Ms Susanne Wrighton, Forschungsgesellschaft Mobilität (FGM-AMOR), GrazE-bikes as game changers: The contribution of pedelecs to increase the cycling share – Mr Gerd Overbeck, Choice Gmbh BerlinCreating a positive cycling culture: Successful promotion campaigns – Ms Elina Baltatzi, European Cyclists' Federation (ECF)Discussion and conclusions
