Cleaner Cooling – Meeting the Rapid Growth in Transport and Urban Cooling Demand18th June 2015, 16.00 – 17.30, Room JDE 61, Committee of the Regions BuildingCooling is a critical infrastructure on which modern society relies for a vast range of services from data storage and air conditioning through to the provision of end-to-end cold chains for food supply and medical products. However, the fact is that many current technologies that serve these needs are highly polluting with detrimental impacts on urban air quality and greenhouse gas levels. Yet demand for cold is on the rise and the European Commission estimates that energy use for cooling in buildings alone in the EU will increase by 72% by 2030. In parallel we continue to waste large amounts of cold across our energy system – for example during the re-gasification of liquefied natural gas – which could be recycled to help meet cooling demand with much lower environmental, health and financial cost.Although clearly vital, compared to electricity, transport and heat, cold has received little attention in the energy debate so far; the EU is yet to have an explicit policy on how best to deliver the energy required for cooling. As a result, there is no joined up approach to infrastructure to capture, distribute and deliver cold efficiently. We need a paradigm shift in thinking in order to meet future demand sustainably. The “Cleaner Cooling” workshop gathers together leading experts and thought leaders in cold from industry and academia to explore, both environmentally and economically, why we need to do cold smarter and inform the EU’s current policy thinking on heating and cooling. Our speakers include:· Adam Chase, Director, E4tech· Prof Toby Peters, Visiting Professor in Power & Cold Economy, University of Birmingham· Prof Judith Evans, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration specialist, London South Bank University· Michael Ayres, Group Managing Director, Dearman· Pat Maughan, Managing Director, Hubbard Products, Zanotti Group· Ann Callens, Food, Cryo & Water Segment Manager Europe, Air ProductsAs a technology company driven by a core vision to make the world a cleaner and cooler place through delivering sustainable cold and power systems, Dearman is delighted to be leading this workshop on cleaner cooling. I do hope you can come along to the workshop and join us in being a part of this vision. With best wishes,Dr Tim Fox CEng CEnv FIMechE FRSAInternational Ambassador, Dearman
