Copernicus Marine Service: An EU asset for sustainable oceans

This session is part of the Copernicus Marine week : a week-long dedicated event, each day covering different themes, from science to operations, and from R&D to production.

On Tuesday 26 September Pavel Poc MEP and Chair of the EP Intergroup on “Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Sustainable Development” will co-host together with MEP Françoise Grossetête and MEP Ricardo Serrão SantosChair of the working group on “Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services” the event entitled “Copernicus Marine Service: An EU asset for sustainable oceans”.

This session is part of the Copernicus Marine week (25th to 29th September): a week-long dedicated event, each day covering different themes, from science to operations, and from R&D to production.

The Copernicus programme is a cornerstone of the European Union’s efforts to monitor the Earth and its many ecosystems. The Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) is committed to delivering state-of-the-art information about the state of the ocean daily, enabling the development of a wide range of blue applications.

2017 marks a very important political year for Europe and its institutions. Amongst other milestones, the entire Copernicus Programme is undergoing a full review and new ideas will be put forth for the next phase of the programme.

A dedicated morning session is organized at the European Parliament, chosen for its emblematic role: an open forum for discussion, that gives all stakeholders the chance to convey their messages right in the heart of the European Union. This conference will be an occasion to highlight the many ways the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service supports Public Authorities in the implementation of the EU directive (e.g. MSFD), contributes to blue growth development, supports the private sector in their respective markets and is engaged in ocean literacy. Stakeholders from the public sector, private sector and civil society will highlight today’s achievements, answer questions, as well as open the floor to discuss the challenges of tomorrow.
