Leonardo ENERGY
The industrial transition to electrification in Europe has become a top priority and is set to dominate the next EU policy debate (2024–2029) following elections in June. Achieving a climate-neutral industry will require the efficient decarbonisation of industrial heat. Process heating is the largest energy use in the industrial sector, responsible for 47% of industrial energy demand and roughly three-quarters of industrial CO2 emissions. If left unaddressed, existing barriers could affect the exploitation of future potentials, and the diffusion of direct electrification technologies will remain low. Watch this webinar and learn about the potential of direct electrification to replace 90% of fossil fuels in supplying process heat to European industry. Eurelectric
Hydropower is the second-largest renewable energy source in the European Union, generating an impressive 375 TWh of clean electricity annually. But hydropower's strength lies in its unparalleled flexible electricity generation and storage capacity, a crucial asset to compensate for the intermittency of renewables. In this video, the @Eurelectric team visits the @ENGIEGROUP 's Coo pumped storage hydropower station, also known as the biggest battery of Belgium. During times of low demand for electricity, the water is pumped to the upper reservoirs. During peak periods, the water is poured into the lower reservoir via the machine room housing the turbines and generators that generate the electricity. In this way, the water is circulated between the reservoirs without impacting natural water bodies. Investment in clean energy this year is set to be twice the amount going to fossil fuels

International Energy...
Find out more: https://iea.li/investment Global spending on clean energy technologies and infrastructure on track to hit $2 trillion in 2024, even as higher financing costs hinder new projects, notably in emerging and developing economies. Despite pressures on financing, global investment in clean energy is set to reach almost double the amount going to fossil fuels in 2024, helped by improving supply chains and lower costs for clean technologies, according to a new IEA report. Total energy investment worldwide is expected to exceed $3 trillion in 2024 for the first time, with some $2 trillion set to go toward clean technologies – including renewables, electric vehicles, nuclear power, grids, storage, low-emissions fuels, efficiency improvements and heat pumps – according to the latest edition of the IEA’s annual World Energy Investment report. The remainder, slightly over $1 trillion, is going to coal, gas and oil. In 2023, combined investment in renewable power and grids overtook the amount spent on fossil fuels for the first time. The new report warns, however, that there are still major imbalances and shortfalls in energy investment flows in many parts of the world. It highlights the low level of clean energy spending in emerging and developing economies (outside China), which is set to exceed $300 billion for the first time – led by India and Brazil. Yet, this accounts for only about 15% of global clean energy investment, far below what is required to meet growing energy demand in many of these countries, where the high cost of capital is holding back the development of new projects. #energy #energytransitions

Boosting efficiency: EU-MORE policy review on replacing inefficient motors in industry and services
20 Jun 2024
Leonardo ENERGY
Electric motors used in industrial applications often remain in service beyond their expected lifespan, limiting the benefits of newer, more efficient motors. The EU-MORE project aims to capitalize on the advantages of accelerating the replacement rate of old, inefficient motors by developing new policies. To achieve this, a review of past and current policies affecting industrial electric motors in the 27 EU Member States was conducted. The review includes 64 policy measures aimed at promoting the early replacement of motors to improve energy efficiency in industries. Each policy measure was characterized with details such as the national responsible authority, implementation timeline, available budget, and impacts on electricity savings and replaced industrial motors. The review process relied on contributions from various country experts who provided a high-level perspective on the national policies under examination. The results show a strong prevalence of financial measures (subsidies and loans), followed by mandatory standards, fiscal measures, and voluntary agreements. The review also highlighted a significant lack of measures targeting trainings and information, deemed particularly relevant for industrial SMEs. Few national policies are incorporating systemic approaches to motor systems, such as including the supply and demand sides of motive power. The review is complemented by an analysis of relevant motor policies implemented outside the European Union. 0:00:00 Welcome & Introductions (Diedert Debusscher, ICA Europe) 0:01:43 Introduction to the EU-MORE Project (João Fong, ISR, University of Coimbra) 0:11:56 Electric motors and motor systems: State of play of the EU Ecodesign legislation (Ronald Piers de Raveschoot, European Commission, DG Energy, Buildings and Products, Unit ENER.B3) 0:28:42 Review of policies for accelerated motor replacement in EU (Ivan Sangiorgio, IEECP)

Heat represents 80% of the energy needs for buildings and its decarbonisation is crucial for an adequate energy transition. The provision of hot water, heating and cooling in our homes and buildings is crucial for people’s health, hygiene and well-being. Providing them with a fair choice of reliable, clean, and affordable technologies to access such needs in a sustainable way is urgently needed. The Fit for 55 package is setting this momentum with a number of legislative requirements recently adopted and to be implemented across all member States, which are going to accelerate the path towards efficient buildings. This webinar zooms on the provision of the Solar Mandate in the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and addresses the potential of Solar Heat for residential and tertiary buildings with the intervention of Anette Persson from DG ENER/European Commission. With 10 million rooftops already equipped with solar heat across Europe, Valérie Séjourné, Managing Director of Solar Heat Europe, will shed light on the solar thermal sector, the various technologies available (including PVT), their specificities and potential contribution towards the race for 2050 climate neutrality. This will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Europe's electricity grids must evolve to keep pace with the transformative shifts in the energy system, essential for realising the energy transition. As we move towards a more decentralised and flexible system, incorporating an increasing number of heat pumps, electric vehicles (EVs), and solar panels on our roofs, it is imperative that the grid is prepared to handle the expected surge in capacity. In this video, Paul Micallef, the Global Digital Grid Leader at @EY, and Oliver Franz, Vice President of European Associations at @Eonenergized, address the question: What is the key challenge when integrating renewables into the distribution grid? Banking on carbon credits: Should banks invest more in voluntary carbon markets?
7 Jun 2024
Carbon Market Watch
A new podcast is coming soon!🎙️ What role do banks play in the voluntary carbon market (VCM)? In this podcast episode, we aim to answer that question. We’ll discuss why banks do (or do not) engage in carbon markets, and what the reasons for this are. Are banks’ carbon crediting strategies and their investment in VCM infrastructure related? What are market growth expectations? And most importantly, would their involvement really help the planet? Columbia Center for Sustainable Investment (CCSI) and Carbon Market Watch (CMW) retrieved research in the form of data and qualitative findings. Our voluntary carbon market expert, Benja Faerks, and Jack Arnold, one of the CCSI authors, will talk us through what they have found. A little hint? The financial transparency in the voluntary carbon market seems to be lacking. Banks are not very active in global carbon markets and see the risks of engagement as outweighing the potential benefits. Banks are also not investing significantly in trying to overcome the problems. However, startups that were either financed by banks or venture capital firms did have involvement in the VCM. Stay tuned!
