Mushroom Farming Finland, FOODLEVERS-project

In this video, Erkki Pöytäniemi explains how mushroom cultivation works in practice. Forest cultivation of shiitake mushrooms makes efficient use of forestry by-products such as small-diameter low value trees from thinning which are normally used as bioenergy or pulp trees. These tree logs can also be used as a cultivation substrate for shiitake mushrooms (and also other mushroom species such as chaga, reishi (also known as lingzhi) and oyster mushrooms) and in this case the added value per tree log can be markedly higher. Another advantage is that forests which are normally only used for wood production, now also produce edible mushrooms. In this way, forest farming can be an ecologically friendly way of food production as it increases land use efficiency. This video was produced in the context of the FOODLEVERS project which ran in 2020-2024. Find out more about the project at https://www.foodlevers.org/

The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. # # #UNClimateChange

Chromium (VI) restriction preparation: what you need to know about the second call for evidence
29 May 2024
EUchemicals
ECHA has received an updated mandate from the Commission to prepare a proposal for a possible restriction on chromium (VI) substances. This update complements the original request from September 2023, which focused on only two entries currently listed on the REACH Authorisation List, namely chromium trioxide (entry 16) and chromic acids (entry 17). The updated mandate now includes chromium (VI) substances specified in entries 16 to 22 and 28 to 31 of the REACH Authorisation List. ECHA has also been requested to consider other chromium (VI) substances not listed on the Authorisation List, in particular barium chromate (EC 233-660-5). Given the wider scope, ECHA will launch a second call for evidence in June to support the preparation of the restriction proposal. In that call we are hoping to receive more information on uses of chromium (VI) substances added in the updated mandate. From previous applications for authorisation we know that these substances are particularly used in the aerospace and defence sector. Who should attend This webinar is intended for interested parties including: • Companies using Cr(VI) substances (i.e. Cr(VI) substances currently listed in REACH Annex XIV (entries 16 to 22 and 28 to 31), as well as barium chromate (EC 233-660-5)) • Companies that have not reported on their uses in the first call for evidence • Companies offering or using alternatives to Cr(VI) substances • Manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, importers of Cr(VI) substances and/or its alternatives • Sector associations, NGOs and other stakeholders as well as Member State Authorities holding relevant information What you will gain Participants will get clarification on the scope of the restriction preparation, an overview of the main outcomes of the first call for evidence, and more details on the additional data requested in the second call for evidence. IUFRO's Science-Policy Programme has now finished a study based on IUFRO's assessment report published in 2010 on the topic of International Forest Governance. This new study provides an analysis of the latest available knowledge on global forest governance. The session presents the outcomes of this study, discussing the main aspects of the international forest governance context to improve the understanding of its increasing complexity, since new programmes and arrangements have emerged at all scales in the past years, and the interactions among them, including synergies and trade-offs, are often unclear. Besides the presentations of outcomes and key messages of the assessment by some of the lead authors of the study, there are interventions from policy-makers and implementing organisations to provide the scientific information presented with real world perspectives. The PARC exhibition Healthy Horizons: Our Journey to Create a Safer Chemical World was launched during the recent PARC Consortium meeting, held from May 13 to 16 in Hall in Tirol, Austria. This exhibition showcased our ongoing efforts and collaborative initiatives aimed at fostering a safer and healthier environment through innovative chemical risk assessment research and regulation. The exhibition featured a series of informative displays, different type of postcards promoting PARC scientific publications, the European Human Biomonitoring Laboratory Network, and PARCopedia ↗. Touch screens highlighted the critical work being undertaken by PARC, such as various research projects ↗. Microscopic images ↗ were shown on a screen to make science accessible to everyone and help them understand the impact of chemicals on our health and ecosystems. These images demonstrated the work and findings of PARC researchers in laboratories. One highlight was an interactive installation titled “Visualising Your Opinion on Chemicals,” which dynamically changed based on participants' responses. Participants were asked to answer different questions by weaving their choices around various options. Specifically, they could choose among 10 chemicals and rate the health risks associated with exposure, the environmental impact, and whether EU regulations adequately address these risks. This installation evolved with participants’ answers, creating a visual representation of collective insights. From the live graph, some preliminary conclusions were drawn: PFAS, pesticides, and mycotoxins were the substances most frequently commented on, with most opinions indicating that they pose a high or moderate risk to both health and the environment. Additionally, most participants expressed that current EU regulations do not adequately address the risks of these chemicals. Another chemical of interest was microplastics. The responses were highly varied, with some participants rating them as high risk and others considering them to pose no or minimal risk. Additionally, a survey with 10 questions was displayed to better understand how to improve certain aspects, such as identifying the challenges in translating chemical research into actionable regulatory policies. The survey also aimed to discover the daily attitudes of scientists working on chemical risk assessment. Participants were confronted with questions such as whether they would buy a raincoat they love if there was no chemical information on the label and it might contain PFAS, whether they have ever participated in a human biomonitoring study, and whether they consciously avoid foods known to contain higher levels of harmful chemicals. By transforming complex data into engaging visual narratives, we make the information accessible and impactful for a diverse audience. With this way to display data and the use of visual storytelling we want to highlight the significance of our findings and the real-world implications of our work. As part of the Fit for 55 package of policy reforms, a revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) Directive has entered into force mid-June 2023, with the main objective to align EU policy instruments with the 2030 climate target of at least -55% emission reductions compared to 1990. The existing EU ETS has been enlarged and strengthened. A new emissions trading system (ETS2) has been created and covers CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion in buildings and road transport and industry which is not covered by the existing ETS (ETS1). These changes to the EU ETS come hand in hand with the establishment of the Social Climate Fund, meant to address the social impacts that could arise from the ETS2. It will help ensure that the green transition is fair and leaves no one behind.

EPA Climate Lecture 2024 - Professor Lea Berrang Ford
9 May 2024
EPA Ireland
The first EPA climate change lecture of 2024 took place on the 23 of April in the Banking Hall at the College Green Hotel with guest speaker Professor Lea Berrang Ford, head of the UKHSA Centre for Climate and Health Security. Climate change will have substantial and widespread consequences for human health, ranging from increased hospitalisation and deaths during more frequent and intense heatwaves, increasing suitability of regions for invasive mosquito species capable of transmitting infectious pathogens, implications for mental health, and impacts on antimicrobial resistance. Many nations are grappling with the challenge of coordinating research and governance to prepare for and respond to these risks. The lecture provided an overview of the landscape of climate change and health, including risks, intervention opportunities, and state of the evidence. Drawing on the experience of the new Centre for Climate and Health Security within the UK Health Security Agency, this lecture provided an optimistic vision for how public health and environmental agencies are grappling with and preparing for the grand challenge of climate change threats to health.
