A Guide to Implementing the Food Improvement Agents Package.

Food additive, enzyme and flavouring controls in the European Union have developed significantly in recent years following the adoption of the Food Improvement Agents Package (FIAP) in 2008. On 12 November 2011, the long awaited Union list of food additives was published. In one Regulation, the use of colours, sweeteners and miscellaneous food additives have been listed in to food categories to which they may be added, which replaced the current individual Directives and their amendments on colours, sweeteners and miscellaneous food additives from 1 June 2013. Significant changes also include, for the first time, provisions on food additives authorised for use in food additives, enzymes, flavourings, and nutrients; and authorisation of a new sweetener, Steviol Glycosides (E960).  Recently, the long-awaited Union list of flavouring substances has also been adopted, providing a harmonised system for the use of flavourings across the European Union. In the future, we shall also see establishment of a Union list of food enzymes for the first time in the European Union. In order to gain an overview how the Regulations covering food additives, enzymes and flavourings have evolved since being published in 2008, and to ensure compliance with the new Union lists, Leatherhead’s one-day course Food Additives, Enzymes and Flavourings - A Guide to Implementing the Food Improvement Agents Package will equip delegates with a complete overview of the legislation described above, including labelling aspects and a look into future legislation developments.
