The safety and security of European economies, societies and citizens rely on space-based applications such as communication, navigation and observation. However, due to the growing complexity of the orbital environment, space-based assets are increasingly at risk from collision with other operational spacecraft or debris. At the same time, objects may re-enter and cause damage on the ground. To mitigate these risks, we need to be able to survey and track such objects, and to provide this information to a variety of stakeholders. The Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) Support Framework was established by the European Union in 2014 with the Decision 541/2014/EU of the European Parliament and the Council (SST Decision). This Decision foresaw the creation of an SST Consortium currently composed of seven EU Member States – France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain. An SST system is a network of ground-based and space-based sensors capable of surveying and tracking space objects, together with processing capabilities aiming to provide data, information and services on space objects that orbit around the Earth. Since 2016, the SST Consortium and the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen) have worked together to develop a European SST capability, and formed the SST Cooperation. The Consortium’s Member States have networked their assets to provide, through the SST Service Provision Portal operated by SatCen, a set of SST services to all EU countries, EU institutions, spacecraft owners and operators, and civil protection authorities. The SST services assess the risk of in-orbit collisions and uncontrolled re-entry of space debris into the Earth’s atmosphere, and detect and characterise in-orbit fragmentations. The SST Consortium EU Member States are represented through their national designated entities: France (CNES), Germany (German Space Agency at DLR), Italy (ASI), Poland (POLSA), Portugal (PT MoD), Romania (ROSA) and Spain (CDTI).

To support the implementation of the Sulphur Directive here in the EU, which limiting the sulphur content in ship fuel, EMSA offers a special Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) service to Member States, free of charge. These special RPAS can fly into the plume of a passing ship to measure the amount of sulphur being released into the air, which gives a good indication of the level of sulphur content in the fuel used by the vessel. This helps in the detection of non-compliant vessels as local coastal authorities are alerted and can request an inspection at the next port of call. The results are uploaded to EMSA’s THETIS-EU system to keep a record of all the measurements taken.

Almost 200 countries are gathering in Dubai to attend the biggest climate event of the year. COP28 – the 2023 United Nations climate change summit – isn’t just another conference though. For the first time, country representatives will assess the progress they’ve made towards cutting their greenhouse gas emissions through a process called the ‘global stocktake’. Satellites are critical in the quest to tackle climate change as they give the robustness and transparency needed to monitor progress towards a lower-emissions and more resilient world. If undertaken effectively, the global stocktake can provide an opportunity to leverage decisions and accelerate ambition in climate action plans. Get Logistics Workers Home Safely!

Logistics last mile delivery network in Europe presents a complex and challenging landscape for drivers, many of whom are not directly employed by directly by the big players likle Amazon. Instead, these drivers are part of a vast web of subcontracted companies. The core of their work involves collecting parcels from Amazon's warehouses, typically situated in out-of-town locations. These warehouses are often isolated, compounding the challenges faced by drivers. The lack of public transport access to these sites is a major concern, making it difficult for many drivers to commute to and from work. Additionally, these locations often lack essential public infrastructure, such as adequate lighting, parking spaces, and other facilities, which are crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of the workforce. A striking illustration of these challenges is brought to light in a video featuring a female driver sharing her experiences at an Amazon warehouse in northern Italy. Her narrative sheds light on the day-to-day realities and dangers she confronts. As she is not a direct employee of Amazon, she faces restrictions that further complicate her work life. One significant issue is the prohibition against using the parking spaces immediately outside the warehouse, a facility presumably reserved for direct Amazon employees. This restriction means that she has to park her vehicle at a considerable distance from the warehouse and then proceed on foot to pick up her delivery van and parcels. This part of her daily routine, particularly in the early hours or late at night, is fraught with safety concerns. The isolation of the warehouse, compounded by inadequate lighting and the absence of pedestrian infrastructure, creates an environment where she feels unsafe, especially when there are few or no people around. These conditions highlight broader issues within the gig economy and subcontracted labor practices. Workers like this driver are integral to the operations of major companies but often find themselves in precarious positions due to the nature of their indirect employment. Their experiences call attention to the need for better regulatory oversight, improved working conditions, and a reevaluation of the responsibilities that large corporations have towards all workers in their supply and delivery chains, regardless of direct or indirect employment status.

Ariane 6 full stage engine hot-fire test

Watch as Europe’s new Ariane 6 rocket goes through a full-scale rehearsal in preparation for its first flight, when teams from @ArianeGroup, @CnesFrance and ESA on the ground will complete a launch countdown rehearsal. The test includes the ignition of the core stage Vulcain 2.1 engine, followed by 470 seconds of stabilised operation covering the entire core stage flight phase, as it would function on a launch into space. Coverage started 19:40 UTC (20:40 CET) on 23 November 2023, 20 minutes before engine ignition and continue five minutes after core stage operation, once the engine burns through all its propellant. Timestaps of the video: 00:00 - 16:18 – Stay tuned 16:19 - 47:49 – Countdown and stop of countdown 47:50 - 01:14:19 – Stay tuned 01:14:20 - 01:30:43 – Restart of countdown and hot-fire test For this rehearsal, the boosters were not ignited, so Ariane 6 stayed firmly on the launch pad at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. The eight-minute engine-fire trial reenacts how the Ariane 6 core stage will fire during a normal flight into space. The trial, conducted with a test model on the launch pad at Europe’s Spaceport will be the longest ‘full-stack' run yet for Ariane 6’s lower liquid propulsion module equipped with a Vulcain 2.1 engine. The Vulcain 2.1 engine will burn through almost 150 tonnes of propellant supplied from the Ariane 6 core stage tanks – liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen – supercooled to temperatures below -250°C. The Vulcain 2.1 engine is an evolution of the Vulcain 2 engine that made Ariane 5 Europe's most successful launch system ever. The upgrade has a simplified and cheaper design and features new technology in the engine nozzle, while the ignition system has been moved from the engine to the launch pad to make the core stage perform better and cost less. Cinq, quatre, trois, deux, un. Allumage Vulcain! This is the moment Ariane 6’s main engine was sparked into life, and the entire main stage of the new rocket and the many parts of the launch pad in Kourou, French Guiana, practised for the full duration of a launch. Of course, as planned, the test model did not leave the ground. Without its boosters, instead of piercing the clouds Ariane 6’ created its own on Earth: a clean byproduct of the Vulcain 2.1 engine’s oxygen and hydrogen propellants, which came together to send out impressive swirls of H2O. After the almost 150 tonnes of propellant was burnt through and the clouds dispersed, the curtains closed on the successful rehearsal. The data from thousands of monitors around the rocket will be crunched in the coming weeks to learn all that’s needed for Ariane’s next, real, flight.
