The safety and security of European economies, societies and citizens rely on space-based applications such as communication, navigation and observation. However, due to the growing complexity of the orbital environment, space-based assets are increasingly at risk from collision with other operational spacecraft or debris. At the same time, objects may re-enter and cause damage on the ground. To mitigate these risks, we need to be able to survey and track such objects, and to provide this information to a variety of stakeholders. The Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) Support Framework was established by the European Union in 2014 with the Decision 541/2014/EU of the European Parliament and the Council (SST Decision). This Decision foresaw the creation of an SST Consortium currently composed of seven EU Member States – France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain. An SST system is a network of ground-based and space-based sensors capable of surveying and tracking space objects, together with processing capabilities aiming to provide data, information and services on space objects that orbit around the Earth. Since 2016, the SST Consortium and the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen) have worked together to develop a European SST capability, and formed the SST Cooperation. The Consortium’s Member States have networked their assets to provide, through the SST Service Provision Portal operated by SatCen, a set of SST services to all EU countries, EU institutions, spacecraft owners and operators, and civil protection authorities. The SST services assess the risk of in-orbit collisions and uncontrolled re-entry of space debris into the Earth’s atmosphere, and detect and characterise in-orbit fragmentations. The SST Consortium EU Member States are represented through their national designated entities: France (CNES), Germany (German Space Agency at DLR), Italy (ASI), Poland (POLSA), Portugal (PT MoD), Romania (ROSA) and Spain (CDTI).

EAC is calling for: the realistic alignment of the core road traffic regulations increased transparency through Europe-wide traffic sector regulations improved road safety sustainable mobility solutions. The EAC is signatory of the European Road Safety Charter. For a Well-Balanced Transport Policy Depending on the situation or distance to be travelled, different means of transport meet different mobility needs so car drivers may also take a plane or train, or go by bike. And that's why the EAC advocates a well-balanced transport policy taking all modes of transport into account. The overall aim is to ensure transport consumer needs are at the forefront of transport policy decisions. Founded in 2008 in Brussels, EAC today represents the interests of a total of 3 million people. As a partner for mobility, our vision is a Europe without borders where travel is easy. That requires harmonising traffic laws between the EU Member States and driving forward innovative technologies – to ensure greater safety and sustainability on the roads.

Meet Hera, our very own asteroid detective. Together with two CubeSats – Milani the rock decoder and Juventas the radar visionary – Hera is off on an adventure to explore Didymos, a double asteroid system that is typical of the thousands that pose an impact risk to planet Earth. In September 2022 NASA’s DART spacecraft tested if it was possible to divert an asteroid by giving it a shove – and found out that it was! Important knowledge, should we wish to avoid going the same way as the dinosaurs. Astronomers can observe from afar how the smaller asteroid’s orbit has shifted since DART’s impact, but there is still a missing piece of the puzzle if we want to fully understand how ‘kinetic impacting’ works in practice. Suitable for kids and adults alike, this episode of ‘The Incredible Adventures of Hera’ explains why ESA’s asteroid detective and its CubeSat assistants need to get up close and personal to shine light on this cosmic mystery. All Together Now: Disciplined flight plan execution is a top priority to ensure a smooth summer 2024
19 Apr 2024
EUROCONTROL
EUROCONTROL’s All Together Now 2024 video on the importance of disciplined flight plan execution explains why sticking to an agreed flight plan - unless it is safety critical - is a priority to ensure smooth air traffic across the Network as any changes affect air traffic control, airports and ground handling. Flights entering into airspace that is not expecting them results in unused, lost capacity in the originally planned airspace and additional loading challenges in the new airspace. Disciplined flight plan execution is one of five priorities EUROCONTROL encourages aviation to focus on as we prepare for busy summer traffic together. The other priorities include prioritising first rotation, delivering agreed capacities, realistic schedules including turnaround times and adverse weather management. Our All Together Now 2024 videos are part of the EUROCONTROL Network Manager’s “All Together Now 2024” campaign to manage busy summer air traffic across the European aviation network. Central to the campaign is our hands-on All Together Now 2024 guide for flight dispatchers, pilots, air traffic controllers, flow management positions and airports that recommends how each can play their part in ensuring efficient air traffic this summer and best cooperate with the EUROCONTROL Network Manager Operations Centre.

EUROCONTROL Stakeholder Forum on projecting FUA evolution

EUROCONTROL
Technical webinar on projecting FUA evolution through the lens of leading international organisations in civil-military cooperation in aviation. Join us for our upcoming technical webinar in the EUROCONTROL Stakeholder Forum series on Wednesday, 17 April 2024, from 15:00 to 16:15 CEST. We will be looking at how flexible use of airspace (FUA) and civil-military cooperation in air traffic management (ATM) have evolved in air traffic management (ATM) through the perspectives of key international organisations: ICAO, NATO, the European Defence Agency and EUROCONTROL. This webinar marks the second technical dialogue following the inaugural Global Civil-Military Aviation Summit held in June 2023, organised by EUROCONTROL in cooperation with ICAO. The unprovoked aggression by Russia in Ukraine has significantly changed our Euro-Atlantic security environment - showing us that the threats we face are global and interconnected. As we move forward, there is a need to push for an even more flexible and dynamic European airspace management throughout a collaborative effort among NATO Allies, European countries and international organisations involved in civil-military ATM cooperation. A collaborative approach such as this has already proven crucial, and it's highly probable that it will become even more so in the future in preserving the integrity of European airspace and maintaining traffic efficiency. How should the implementation of FUA and civil-military cooperation in aviation evolve in order to support even better the missions assigned by States to international organisations? What are the core principles and collaborative strategies that the four organisations should adopt to successfully support Member States with the harmonised implementation of a flexible use of airspace? These are just some of the big questions that the following top experts will be addressing in the webinar. Make sure to submit your questions in advance and join us on live on the day to learn more.

A total solar eclipse swept across North America yesterday, blocking out the Sun momentarily with parts of the continent plunged into darkness. Geostationary satellites orbiting 36 000 km away captured images of the rare celestial event. These images, captured by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-16), captured the moon’s shadow moving across North America from approximately 16:00 to 23:00 CEST (15:00 to 22:00 BST.) A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth and, for a short period, blocks the face of the Sun, save for a visible ring of light, known as the Sun’s corona. The track of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface, called the path of totality, spanned across the North American continent – from Mexico to the very eastern tip of Canada. The GOES series is a collaborative development and acquisition effort between National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA. The GOES-16 (GOES-East) satellite, the first of the series, provides continuous imagery and atmospheric measurements of Earth's western hemisphere and monitors space weather. The Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission also captured images of the eclipse with its Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR). The eclipse also acts as a laboratory for researching what happens to weather when the Moon’s shadow passes over. The shadow makes air temperatures drop and can cause clouds to evolve in different ways. Data from GOES, Sentinel-3 and other satellites are now being used to explore these effects.
