The Centre for Social Sciences (Hungarian Academy of Sciences Centre of Excellence) is a research institution where 200 Hungarian and international researchers engage in exploratory and innovative national and international research projects in the Social Sciences. Founded by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and part of the Eötvös Loránd Research Network, the Centre’s charter established its freedom to research without political influence. Comprising four institutes—Political Science, Minority Studies, Legal Studies, Sociology, and other research units—, the Centre has greatly contributed to understanding and addressing far-reaching societal issues that pertain to Hungarian and European societies. The Centre’s research activities focus on sociology, political science, computational social science, network science, minority studies, and law. Researchers take an interdisciplinary approach in their scientific work. The Centre’s main goals are to extend the quality of Hungarian research to Europe and beyond, to take a prominent regional lead in social science research, and to serve as a point of scientific reference in Hungary. The Centre currently operates over 70 local and international research projects, it manages an open access repository for research data, and provides consultations for its researchers on GDPR and data management.Publishing six journals—two of them ranked by SCOPUS—, the Centre’s ambition has also been to expand its international publication portfolio in highly ranked international journals and publishing companies. A state-of-the-art research performance evaluating system has been used since 2013 with a focus on internal publications. Between 2017 and 2018, the efforts led to a 50% increase in the number of published works. Researchers at the Centre have actively engaged in international projects with EU’s H2020 research funding scheme. The Centre has worked on managing and participating in several of these projects. In 2018, the H2020 Research and Innovation Action project proposal DEMOS, which the Centre coordinates, won a €3 million grant from the European Commission. The Centre acts as work package and task leader of several ongoing H2020 projects such as BRIDGES, OPTED, RED-WELL, ESS-SUSTAIN-2, and RURALIZATION. The Centre also took part in a variety of other H2020 and FP7 projects (such as MIME, MOPACT, FAMILIES & SOCIETIES), COST actions, and Visegrad grants.A professional research administration team constantly sharpens its expertise in proposal writing, research communication and impact, and management of international grants. Besides receiving domestic and international training, the members of the Centre’s administration play active roles in international research management networks, such as EARMA and BESTPRAC.

GAPP  is a 45 month Joint Action funded by the EU Health programme aiming at facilitating the development of a common and optimal approach to assess and authorize preparation processes in blood and tissues establishments (BEs and TEs), adapting requirements as prescribed by Article 29 of Directive 2002/98/EC and Article 28 of Directive 2004/23/EC .   This Joint Action will clearly contribute to the implementation of Union legislation in the fields of human tissues and cells, blood, providing tools and training to increase harmonisation of those MS activities that regulate the areas of blood transfusion, transplantation of tissues and cells and assisted reproduction, in strong abidance with art of Annex I of Regulation 282/2014. These are fields of healthcare that involve a considerable amount of movement of donated substances of human origin between MS and also movement of citizens between MS for treatment, particularly in the field of assisted ; Since the directives for these fields were adopted, significant technical developments have taken place and the complexity of preparation processes has greatly increased. Increasing complexity of processing can bring significant quality and functionality improvements for patients, and/or more efficient use of donations, but it can also bring increased risk, particularly as the level of complexity brings the final product towards the borderline with medicinal products. GAPP will ensure that any possible advantage or outcome is taken into account from two ongoing Public Health Programme projects focused on tissues and cells (EuroGTP II and ECCTR) incorporating a need for clinical follow-up data as part of a comprehensive process authorization. GAPP durable output is that a concept of a knowledge sharing platform on PPAs will be developed and fed in order to facilitate sharing of information among European Union, Competent Authorities and all EU CA inspectors and assessors will be trained specifically to assess and authorize preparation processes of tissues, cells, reproductive cells and blood products. Equipment suppliers are the mainstay of advanced manufacturing, increasingly recognized as indispensable for basic needs from basic nutrition and other human needs such as employment. The supervision and regulation of manufacturing has always been a major political challenge. Today policy makers are contending with technological complex global supply chains and a hardening competitive context. The European Union has an important role in developing and optimizing the international regulatory and policy framework for manufacturing. The EU is increasingly called to arbitrate on environmental protection issues and propose proper regulation and practices. Informed decisions are crucial: manufacturing can be seen as a source of pollution, the cause of inequality or the principal menace to earth’s sustainability, but the same manufacturing industry is biggest employer, and produces pollution abatement as well as waste to energy solutions.

EGU WEBINARS: How To Measure The Earth - An Introduction To Geodesy
1 Dec 2022
European Geosciences...
Geodesy is a research field that studies the shape and location of the Earth in time and space. Geodetic measurements are used in many geoscientific disciplines, such as hydrology, glaciology, geodynamics, oceanography and seismology. Three early career scientists (ECS) of the Geodesy division will give you an introduction about Geodesy and talk about different measurement techniques and how they can be used to monitor plate tectonics, mass changes and the solid Earth (e.g., glacial isostatic adjustment). The webinar will conclude with an audience Q&A, so come prepped with your own questions! Speakers: Andreas Kvas is a Postdoc at the Institute of Geodesy at Graz University of Technology in Austria. His research focuses on static and time-variable gravity field recovery from satellite data and applications of gravity data in other Earth science disciplines like hydrology and oceanography. He obtained his PhD in 2020 from Graz University of Technology and tweets as @akvas_esm. Rebekka Steffen is a researcher at Lantmäteriet (The Swedish Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authority). She is working on glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) modelling with a focus on stress field changes and model development, and is involved in the development of a European velocity model as part of EUREF (Regional Reference Frame IAG Sub-Commission for Europe). Rebekka is also the chair of a IAG (International Association of Geodesy) Joint Study Group on GIA. She received her PhD in 2013 from the University of Calgary and tweets as @rebekka_geo. Benedikt Soja is Assistant Professor of Space Geodesy at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. His research focuses on the application of machine learning in geodesy, in particular related to the application of satellite navigation data for Earth observation. Benedikt started his scientific career in 2013 as a research assistant in the field of geodesy at the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam and obtained his Ph.D. from Vienna University of Technology in 2016. 2.3 million people live with an HIV diagnosis in Europe. The infection and the disease keep having a major impact on the wellbeing of the people affected by it. On the World AIDS Day 2022 - #WAD2022 we want to focus on three things: - TESTING - TREATING - PREVENTING and this animation - is the second one touching on the topic of prevention. You may know a bit already about PrEP - the pill one takes daily or on demand, to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV. But did you know there is also PEP - the post-exposure prophylaxis - that is used after one may have been exposed to the HIV virus. Watch our animation and learn more about it. Why should we protect the ocean’s #environment ? For uncountable reasons. One of them is that marine living organisms such as #algae can be the source for new medicines. These drugs may solve still unresolved human issues as Crohn’s and Colitis, also known as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (#IBD). In this video, Luísa Barreira researcher at the Centre for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) located at the University of Algarve, discusses finding new compounds in algae. Listen to the recordings of this webinar organised by the Communication Working Group of the Marie Curie Alumni Association and find out more about the incredible career of Jason Palmer, who moved from research to journalism. Jason's journey in his own words: I got undergraduate degrees in physics and mathematics at the University of Florida and got the chance at a staff job at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, where I had previously done a summer placement. My line manager there was a postdoctoral fellow from Imperial College London, and when he got a big grant to start work on vibrational spectroscopy he invited me to join him. When I finished my PhD, I interviewed with two excellent groups for a Marie Curie-funded postdoc, eventually settling on the European Laboratory for Nonlinear Spectroscopy, in Florence. While there I tried my hand at freelance science writing, and I was instantly hooked. I decided to start over: I applied for science-writing internships and got accepted to two, at The Economist and New Scientist. Then, what started as a four-week placement at the BBC covering for a staff absence turned into five glorious years—and the best journalism education I could have received. I won a spot on the Knight Science Journalism fellowship at MIT, which was life-alteringly fun, and by the time that was over The Economist were looking for a science & technology correspondent. I’ve since expanded my worldview a lot, working as an editor on what was then a new app/newsletter, Espresso, and since 2018 helped to develop and launch The Intelligence, our daily news podcast.
