energy Episode on energy community in The Netherlands with Anatol Itten and Siward Zomer
Episode on energy community in The Netherlands with Anatol Itten and Siward Zomer
19 Jan 2023
Energy Cities
The Netherlands is one of the leading countries when it comes to an energy policy taking into account many different people and sectors. The Dutch National Climate Agreement from 2019 is the best example. So, to achieve its climate and energy goals, the country needs the highest possible involvement and public ownership of green energy, including for heating homes. Today’s episode brings together 2 Dutchmen whose work focus is on citizen participation in exactly this energy transition. Anatol Itten is Senior Policy Officer for the Dutch government's Ministry of Economy and Climate. with a focus on citizen participation policy. Siward Zomer leads the Dutch federation of energy cooperatives called Energiesamen. What can we learn from The Netherlands - especially on local cooperative heat - and what is still missing to better empower communities to take ownership and benefit from renewable energy production? Our two interviewees gave their assessment of the energy community situation in The Netherlands: Even a frontrunner still has some missing pieces for a successful energy transition. We ended our conversation with a topic that could easily fill another episode: The lack of staff in local governments is, indeed, a huge problem across Europe. Last year, we at Energy Cities have conducted our own study, focusing on the staffing needs of administrations to decarbonise the built environment. As we need to close, I want you, dear listeners, to take some figures from this study with you: local administrations in Europe would need 214 000 new positions between now and 2030 for energy and climate missions. This represents around 2.5 additional full-time positions in each European municipality per year! This episode was produced with support from SCCALE 20-30-50. SCCALE is an EU project (Horizon 2020 programme) which makes collaboration happen to get many more energy communities up and running. The people behind SCCALE203050 work on a methodology and toolkit for citizens, cities and policy makers. If you, too, want to see more local energy communities across Europe, check out the toolkit and explore all of the project’s resources at the website www.sccale203050.eu

How can the ESCO market benefit from streamlined energy savings calculations?

Leonardo ENERGY
The energy services market in Europe is still relatively small compared to the US. The European Union has taken legislative measures to foster the development of ESCOs (Energy Service Companies) and their industries, such as providing incentives for investments and encouraging energy efficiency projects. Recent trends suggest that the ESCO market is growing, with an increasing number of companies offering energy services. The H2020 project streamSAVE supports countries in developing savings estimations under Art.3 and Art.7 of the Energy Efficiency Directive EED. One of the outputs definitely worth a check is the Guidance on Standardized saving methodologies (energy, CO2, and costs) for in total 10 prioritized energy savings actions. This webinar explains the Guidance and zooms in on those energy savings actions that deserve a more prominent role in energy services contracts, such as the replacement of old and inefficient electric motors in industry. The average industrial motor remains in operation much longer than its anticipated lifetime and ESCOs can help accelerate their timely replacement. Speakers will elaborate on the status of the ESCO market, and shed light on the role of streamlined energy savings calculations to foster this market and its industries. More information at https://help.leonardo-energy.org/hc/en-us/articles/7382978031004 In this session, Louise Sunderland of the Regulatory Assistance Project presents a recently published paper on the steps needed to ensure the transition to clean heating and the phase out of fossil fuel boilers, which is accelerating in some European member states, does not disadvantage lower income households. The presentation will include a brief assessment of the economics and affordability of switching from heating with a fossil fuel boiler to heating with a heat pump for low income households. Beyond the simple economics of the technology switch, the session will also explore some of the other changes needed to ensure that clean, electrified heating is not only affordable but desirable for lower income households. These include physical changes to homes to combine optimal levels of energy efficiency with or before the heating switch, changes to energy pricing to make electrification affordable and changes to the tariffs and services through which we purchase heat and that guide the way we use energy.

The Zbox is almost identical to regular containers, with standard ISO dimensions, but due to their foldability, five Zboxes can be packed into the space of one traditional container when empty. The Zbox has been engineered to withstand extreme conditions, and can be placed anywhere on shipping vessels. Navlandis worked closely with Marguisa to implement Zbox on several routes and reduce costs for the shipping line.

Strengthening Dutch Energy Resilience: Overcoming Energy Storage Complexities | Solarplaza Webinar
18 Jan 2023
Solarplaza
There are some certainties regarding the future of the Dutch energy market: (1) there will be an increasing influx of renewables into the grid; (2) energy demand will grow; and (3) grid constraints are part of our reality. Already in 2021, 33% of the electricity production in the Netherlands came from renewables, a 22% increase from 2020. Undoubtedly, the continued build-out of intermittent power sources will require innovative solutions and technologies such as energy storage to mitigate their fluctuating power production. The involved technologies are not new, but the creation of profitable and successful business cases in the Dutch context is still very much under trial. There is a clear need for knowledge exchange and lessons learned from market and storage experts. Join this energy storage webinar to find out: 🔹 Is storage the ideal way to support flexibility in energy markets and, if so, will implementing storage solutions with renewable energy projects become the norm? 🔹 What are the main storage trends in the Netherlands and how can you begin building a successful business case to present to the DNO/TSO? 🔹 What does future planning look like for Dutch grid operators and does storage feature prominently in those scenarios? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 🔗 Links For an overview of upcoming events: http://www.solarplaza.com/events/ Sign up for our newsletter for updates: https://bit.ly/2UwOGy1 👍 FOLLOW US LinkedIn: https://nl.linkedin.com/company/solarplaza_2 Twitter: https://twitter.com/solarplaza

Global Status of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture, BECCS | ICSC Webinars
19 Jan 2023
International Centre...
This webinar will review the global status of BECCS and its role in mitigating the climate emergency. It examines the potential GGR of BECCS in future energy landscapes, the current status, the technologies, their TRL and performance, and the research and development (R&D) priorities particular to BECCS systems. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Integrated Assessment Modelling (IAM) scenarios, a 66% or better chance of limiting global temperatures rises to 1.5oC would mean an annual CO2 removal average of 12Gt/year until the end of the century (IPCC, 2018). This needs to begin immediately and ramp up rapidly over the decades that follow. IAMs show that bioenergy with carbon capture and storage or BECCS is pivotal technology with potential to sequester 10Gt of CO2/year (Royal Society & Royal Academy of Engineering, 2018), although sustainability considerations indicate 2-4 GtCO2/y is a better estimate. Implementation of BECCS at this scale is not without significant challenges. Just as GHGs are transboundary pollutants, so the biomass supply chain is global. Development of sustainable, resilient BECCS systems that meet the SDGs will require careful management, particularly in relation to Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal 13: Climate Action, and Goal 15: Life on Land. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Presenter: Dr Jenny Jones Download this presentation: https://www.sustainable-carbon.org/webinar/global-status-of-bioenergy-with-carbon-capture-beccs/ ----------------------------------------------------------------- Twitter: https://twitter.com/ICSCarbon Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/icscarbon

Find out more: https://iea.li/WEO2022 High and volatile fossil fuel prices in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine underscore the risks inherent in today’s energy system and the importance of energy security to our economies and daily lives. Energy transitions offer the chance to build a safer and more sustainable energy system that reduces exposure to fuel price volatility and brings down energy bills, but there is no guarantee that the journey will be a smooth one. Traditional security threats remain, even as new potential vulnerabilities emerge. This video proposes ten guidelines to help buttress energy security in the “mid‐transition”, when the clean energy and fossil fuel systems co‐exist and are both required to deliver reliable energy services. #energy #energytransitions #sustainability #netzero #renewableenergy

Dr Langner is also the author of an earlier book on “Understanding Copper” that serves as a reference work for the industry. The webinar will first set the stage to explain where NFMs are utilized in energy transition technologies and what performance advantages they offer through their properties. Energy systems are made to function efficiently and have a long service life thanks to the conductivity, corrosion resistance, and material strength of NFMs. Because of the energy transition, the demand for NFMs is anticipated to rise significantly and besides more mining capacity, recycling becomes increasingly important for certain metals. A third theme of the webinar will be a focus on recycling and the unique function of copper in comparison to other metals.
