The Political Festival of Europe is a yearly democracy festival that aims to gather citizens of Europe over the course of four days to discuss politics and embrace Europe’s rich history and cultural heritage. The Political Festival of Europe takes place in a town called Mariager – also known as the city of roses – an old, idyllic medieval town with crooked houses, cobblestoned streets and timber framed houses. With a modest population of just over 2,500 inhabitants, Mariager town will soon become the place where European democracy will come to life gathering hundreds of thousands of Europeans who want in on the future of Europe. Our mission is to be a place of: Courage – where we dare discuss the future of Europe “Peoplelization” – where we build communities as well as celebrate, showcase, and spread insights to local, regional, and national cultures Inspiration – where we establish debates, dialogues, hearings, and citizen involvement Accessibility – where we create an informal environment for citizens, politicians, and business leaders to meet Anchoring – where we anchor and raise the importance of our democracy for the future of Europe at a local level  In line with our missions, our vision is to “peoplelize” European politics and become a platform, where we strengthen democracy and unity in Europe. We aspire to become the political Olympic Games, where everyone has the possibility of participating in creating the future of Europe. The COVID-19 pandemic has given us all the more reason to create a platform, where we together can discuss European politics and its future. A platform, where people actively can get involved in developing European democracy. The inspiration behind Political Festival of Europe comes from the Nordic tradition of folkemøder –  a concept we want to take to the next level and raise from national settings to a pan-European setting in order to discuss matters that influence everyone in Europe. What is a Folkemøde?  The Danish tradition of Folkemøde [Folk – people; møde – meeting] is a public meeting that dates back to 1839. It is a political event that gathers people with different political views and positions in the interest of democracy. A Folkemøde takes form of informal discussions and speeches across opinions and hierarchy that strengthens active involvement of all participants – every one has a say, every one is heard. After the concept faded away in the 1940s, neighboring Sweden’s own form of folkemøde – Almedalsveckan introduced in 1968 – became the inspiration and groundwork for Denmark to revive the concept on the island of Bornholm in 2011 with their very own annual Folkemøde. It took on popularity fairly fast and has generated thousands of national visitors ever since. So far held at national levels, we aim to expand this concept to the whole of Europe. Here is why. What the purpose of a Folkemøde? The Danish model of Folkemøde is the cornerstone for democracy and pays tribute to the community. The foundation of a Folkemøde lies in dismantling barriers between citizens, politicians and decision-makers in order to bring politics closer to the people and to make society a better place for everybody.  The aim is to lead discussions about how to improve the future of the society and have citizens participate in shaping change. A “folkemøde” aims to: o   Inspire and challenge political views and visions o   Let people meet and listen to politicians they voted for o   Let people have a say and be heard o   Increase trust between citizens and decision-makers and hold politicians accountable o   “Peoplelize”, ;build a community where culture is showcased and celebrated o   Facilitate meaningful debates and anchor them in the political agenda  As cultural heritage is also celebrated in a Folkemøde, entertainment and good food are an integral part of such an event. Hence, at the Political Festival of Europe, you will be able to find arts and crafts, music and gastronomy, alongside the political debates, speeches, workshops, hearings etc.

UN Climate Change
How do we track progress on climate action? This year, countries must submit their first-ever Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs), assessing climate actions taken and progress made under the Paris Agreement. But what exactly are BTRs and why is transparent reporting critical to global climate action? Twitter ► https://twitter.com/UNFCCC Instagram ► https://www.instagram.com/UNclimatechange/ TikTok ► https://www.tiktok.com/@unclimatechange Facebook ► https://www.facebook.com/UNclimatechange The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (198 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. # # #UNClimateChange #Together4Transparency

Assessing EU's chemicals legislation: more needs to be done to make chemicals safe and sustainable
16 Apr 2024
EUchemicals
Welcome to this episode of the Safer Chemicals Podcast, where we look into the EU indicator framework for chemicals, focused on improving chemical safety across Europe. The transition towards safer and more sustainable chemicals is progressing in some areas, while in others, it is just beginning. This is the finding of a first, joint Europe-wide assessment of the drivers and impact of chemical pollution by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The benchmarking found that more work is still needed to reduce the impact of harmful substances on human health and the environment.  We are joined by Leena Ylä-Mononen, the Executive Director of EEA and Sharon McGuinness, the Executive Director of ECHA. Together, they discuss the roles their agencies play in developing these indicators. This episode offers an in-depth look at how these agencies work together to support safer chemical management, highlighting the real-world impact of their work on environmental and public health. We'll explore the challenges faced during the project, the collaboration between various European institutions, and what future developments we might expect in the realm of chemical safety. Background According to the joint EEA-ECHA synthesis report on the EU indicator framework for chemicals, the overall use of the most harmful chemicals (in particular those that are carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic) is still growing but more slowly than the overall chemicals market growth. Pressure is increasing to avoid the use of so-called substances of concern and to implement the principles of the safe and sustainable by design framework.   There is a need to more effectively ensure that consumer products do not contain the most harmful substances, for example chemicals that are endocrine disrupting, that negatively affect the hormone system, or substances that are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic, which present a risk for years to come even after their use has ceased.  More data and information are needed to better understand human and environmental exposure to those most harmful chemicals and their impacts. Still, the indicators show clearly that the shift to safe and sustainable chemicals must continue and should even be accelerated.  Listen to our episode for a deep dive into what the main findings of this initial assessment were and check the online dashboard for more details. Breaking Point: San Diego’s Border Pollution Reaches Crisis Levels

Surfrider Foundation
This is the biggest national health crisis you've never heard of... The Pacific coastline along the U.S./Mexico border is steeped in rich multi-cultural identities, contains immense biodiversity, and contributes high economic value to both countries. Yet, this region is plagued by severe pollution that threatens public health, limits coastal access, hurts ecosystems and wildlife, and jeopardizes local economies and national security. Every day, millions of gallons of untreated sewage, toxic chemicals, and trash flow through the Tijuana River Watershed at the U.S./Mexico border. Our San Diego Surfrider Chapter has been sounding the alarm on this issue for years, and needs your support to bring this issue to the forefront of national attention. Ecosystems are being destroyed, beaches are closed a majority of the year in South San Diego County, and this onslaught of pollution is linked to common illnesses such as asthma, gastrointestinal issues, and skin infections. Even more severe illnesses like hepatitis and flesh eating bacteria have been reported by members of our Military and Border Patrol. 📝 Sign the Petition: https://www.surfrider.org/action/end-the-public-health-and-environmental-justice-emergency-at-the-usmexico-border?hsLang=en

The biggest Earth Hour - what's needed to protect our planet?
20 Mar 2024
The WWFEU European P...
On 23 March 2024, millions of people around the world will celebrate Earth Hour, the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment. This year, we are going beyond the symbolic gesture of turning off lights. We are on a mission to turn a single Earth Hour into millions of hours filled with action and awareness, all aimed at protecting our planet. WWF EU is using Earth Hour to highlight the importance of our European nature and shine a spotlight on what’s at stake in the upcoming EU elections. European communities have been hit hard by the consequences of extreme weather, like the wildfires that wreaked havoc last summer. In addition to the climate crisis, various environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss and EU’s fossil fuel reliance are negatively impacting our everyday lives. The outcome of the 2024 European elections will determine the future of many citizens and have an enormous impact on the environment and climate. European policy-makers have the opportunity to act for the benefit of our planet and protect us! Ahead of 9 June, when millions of citizens will cast their votes, WWF EU’s Director, Ester Asin, has used this opportunity to remind European policy-makers of the commitments they should make to protect our natural world. #BiggestHourForEarth #EarthHour #MyHourForEarth
