The Political Festival of Europe is a yearly democracy festival that aims to gather citizens of Europe over the course of four days to discuss politics and embrace Europe’s rich history and cultural heritage. The Political Festival of Europe takes place in a town called Mariager – also known as the city of roses – an old, idyllic medieval town with crooked houses, cobblestoned streets and timber framed houses. With a modest population of just over 2,500 inhabitants, Mariager town will soon become the place where European democracy will come to life gathering hundreds of thousands of Europeans who want in on the future of Europe. Our mission is to be a place of: Courage – where we dare discuss the future of Europe “Peoplelization” – where we build communities as well as celebrate, showcase, and spread insights to local, regional, and national cultures Inspiration – where we establish debates, dialogues, hearings, and citizen involvement Accessibility – where we create an informal environment for citizens, politicians, and business leaders to meet Anchoring – where we anchor and raise the importance of our democracy for the future of Europe at a local level  In line with our missions, our vision is to “peoplelize” European politics and become a platform, where we strengthen democracy and unity in Europe. We aspire to become the political Olympic Games, where everyone has the possibility of participating in creating the future of Europe. The COVID-19 pandemic has given us all the more reason to create a platform, where we together can discuss European politics and its future. A platform, where people actively can get involved in developing European democracy. The inspiration behind Political Festival of Europe comes from the Nordic tradition of folkemøder –  a concept we want to take to the next level and raise from national settings to a pan-European setting in order to discuss matters that influence everyone in Europe. What is a Folkemøde?  The Danish tradition of Folkemøde [Folk – people; møde – meeting] is a public meeting that dates back to 1839. It is a political event that gathers people with different political views and positions in the interest of democracy. A Folkemøde takes form of informal discussions and speeches across opinions and hierarchy that strengthens active involvement of all participants – every one has a say, every one is heard. After the concept faded away in the 1940s, neighboring Sweden’s own form of folkemøde – Almedalsveckan introduced in 1968 – became the inspiration and groundwork for Denmark to revive the concept on the island of Bornholm in 2011 with their very own annual Folkemøde. It took on popularity fairly fast and has generated thousands of national visitors ever since. So far held at national levels, we aim to expand this concept to the whole of Europe. Here is why. What the purpose of a Folkemøde? The Danish model of Folkemøde is the cornerstone for democracy and pays tribute to the community. The foundation of a Folkemøde lies in dismantling barriers between citizens, politicians and decision-makers in order to bring politics closer to the people and to make society a better place for everybody.  The aim is to lead discussions about how to improve the future of the society and have citizens participate in shaping change. A “folkemøde” aims to: o   Inspire and challenge political views and visions o   Let people meet and listen to politicians they voted for o   Let people have a say and be heard o   Increase trust between citizens and decision-makers and hold politicians accountable o   “Peoplelize”, ;build a community where culture is showcased and celebrated o   Facilitate meaningful debates and anchor them in the political agenda  As cultural heritage is also celebrated in a Folkemøde, entertainment and good food are an integral part of such an event. Hence, at the Political Festival of Europe, you will be able to find arts and crafts, music and gastronomy, alongside the political debates, speeches, workshops, hearings etc.

SAFE – Safe Food Advocacy Europe was created in 2015 out of a concern for public health related to food issues. One of the most influential factors of the EU’s food legislation is lobbying, indeed the large majority of EU legislation is influenced by lobbyists. There are more than lobbyists in Brussels, 70% of them are working for businesses, only 10% work for NGOs. Thus, SAFE was created to ensure that consumer’s health and concerns remain at the core of the EU’s food legislation. SAFE is the only NGO in Brussels focusing only on the protection and representation of EU consumers in the food sector. SAFE monitors the EU’s food legislation process and cooperates with EU legislators and its actors to draft comprehensive food regulations. Mission Strengthening the voice of civil society in the EU debate over food regulation, thereby reinforcing participatory democracy in the EU. Increasing public awareness of food safety issues, noticeably by organising training programmes and seminars designed to allow citizens to make informed decisions on the food they eat by learning how to read food labelling (additives, food colourings, MSG). SAFE is giving training to children and teenager in school to reduce excessive sugar and food colorants consumption. Supporting independent research by identifying priority areas for research and raising funds.

Fifty shades of green sustainable finance and the EU taxonomy
1 Feb 2023
Ecologic Institute
How do we classify which investments are the right ones to power the transition to a climate and nature-friendly economy? This is a pretty big question, and one that is crucial to a successful implementation of the European Green Deal. The EU taxonomy – the subject of our latest episode - specifies the various criteria that investments will need to fulfill to be considered sustainable. In practice, the taxonomy is a long list of economic activities with benchmark performance standards. But how do we guarantee that these investments actually achieve what they are set out to do? How do we ensure that we don’t finance activities that support one goal, such as climate change mitigation, but harm our ability to achieve others (e.g., reversing biodiversity loss)? And how is the EU taxonomy implemented in practice? In the latest “Green Deal – Big Deal?” podcast episode, the hosts Ewa Iwaszuk and Aaron Best from Ecologic Institute discuss these questions, together with their interview guests Ben Allen (Research Director at the Institute for European Environmental Policy) and Nicole Kramer (Sustainability Analyst at Greenomy). About our interview guests: Ben Allen has served as a co-rapporteur for the Technical Working Group of the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance, an expert group that was convened by the European Commission to assist in developing the taxonomy. He gives us a look behind the scenes of how the EU taxonomy was designed and explains how the current taxonomy deviates from the expert group’s initial proposal. Looking at the EU taxonomy through a business lens, Nicole Kramer describes the challenges and opportunities businesses face when implementing the EU taxonomy. Progress on #ClimateChange is not possible without transparency & accountability. That means clearly communicating how climate pledges line up with the goals of the Paris Agreement and being held to account if they fall short. #Together4Transparency UN Climate Change on Twitter: twitter.com/UNFCCC UN Climate Change on Instagram: instagram.com/UNclimatechange UN Climate Change on Facebook: facebook.com/UNclimatechange The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (197 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. # # #UNClimateChange

Here is a 10-minute summary of some of the conference's highlights. UN Climate Change on Twitter: twitter.com/UNFCCC UN Climate Change on Instagram: instagram.com/UNclimatechange UN Climate Change on Facebook: facebook.com/UNclimatechange The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. #COP27 #UNClimateChange

Destroying seagrass meadows hinders the ocean’s ability to mitigate the climate
30 Jan 2023
Seas At Risk
Seagrass meadows play a key role in the fight against climate change. Even though seagrass only covers 0.2% of the seafloor, it silently absorbs 10% of the ocean’s carbon each year, 35 times faster than tropical rainforests. Seagrass meadows also protect coastlines from erosion, as they decrease waves’ strength by up to 75%. Moreover, seagrass meadows host a great diversity of marine life, contributing to keeping the ocean alive. Considering the urgent need for carbon neutrality to meet the Paris Agreement, natural solutions like protecting seagrass meadows should be considered a key climate priority. However, bottom trawling systematically destroys these habitats, whose surface has been largely reduced in the past decades hindering the precious ocean’s precious climate mitigation ability. Bottom trawling is a threat to climate. Banning bottom trawling would unlock the ocean’s full potential to mitigate climate change.

pollution Bottom trawling hinders the ocean’s ability to store carbon
Bottom trawling hinders the ocean’s ability to store carbon
16 Jan 2023
Seas At Risk
For thousands of years fish excrement and dead creatures have accumulated on the seabed and are stored in sediment in the form carbon. By dragging huge and heavy nets across the seafloor, bottom trawling disturbs sea sediment, releasing stored carbon that has accumulated on the seafloor, making the ocean more acidic and likely contributing to the acceleration of a changing climate. The ocean holds great potential in the fight against climate change. It is one of the largest natural carbon sinks as it accumulates and stores carbon for an indefinite period, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The ocean has already absorbed 26% of human produced CO2 emissions since the industrial revolution, slowing down the effects of climate change. Banning bottom trawling would not only help to reverse the ecological crisis, but also unlock the ocean’s full potential to mitigate climate change.

Produced as part of a ‘Climate Change in the Irish Mind’ project with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, these interactive maps show beliefs and attitudes around climate change at national, regional and county levels: http://bit.ly/3WnYHv9 While the evidence is largely consistent across the country, there are minor regional variations in the level of concern about climate risks with, for example, slightly more people worried about water shortages in Dublin and the Mid-East region. In addition, somewhat more people are worried about severe storms in the West, Mid-West, and South-West regions. These spatial variations align with known environmental risks in these areas.
