Almost 20,000 Ukrainian children have been kidnapped by Russia during its invasion of Ukraine, according to Kyiv’s official data. Russia’s figures are much bigger: it says it has relocated more than half a million of Ukrainian children - and is not going to give them back. This is a horrible, systematic policy of depriving the Ukrainian nation of its future. The Explaining Ukraine podcast invites Khrystyna Shkudor, advocacy manager of the campaign “Where Are Our People?” (https://deportation.org.ua/). The campaign is aimed at uncovering Russia's policy of forcible deportations of Ukrainians. It is run by PR Army, a Ukrainian non-profit communication initiative. Oxia Planum contains one of the largest exposures of rocks on Mars that are around 3.9 billion years old and clay-rich, indicating that water once played a role here. The site sits in a wide catchment area of valley systems with the exposed rocks exhibiting different compositions, indicating a variety of deposition and wetting environments. A European rover, Rosalind Franklin, is part of the ExoMars programme that will explore the surface of Mars. The rover will be the first mission to combine the capability to move across the surface and to study Mars at depth. 📹 ESA - European Space Agency #ESA #Ariane6 #CubeSat

Breaking down barriers to basic payment accounts - A Finance Watch webinar
31 May 2024
Finance Watch
In this video, Peter Norwood and Dr. Duygu Damar-Blanken explain the findings of the new study published by Finance Watch, which identifies barriers to basic payment accounts for vulnerable consumers in Germany, Spain and Romania. Finance Watch calls on EU policymakers to update the European Payment Accounts Directive (PAD) to address these issues. In brief: With the support of our members and partners, Finance Watch conducted a study of the EU basic payment accounts market based on a mystery shopping exercise and qualitative research in three EU Member States, namely Spain, Germany, and Romania. The objective of the study was to gather hard data in the field regarding the effectiveness of PAD and to identify possible changes needed to the directive. The study findings show that there is a need to revise the PAD to ensure that it can meet its full potential. Many vulnerable consumers do not have access to affordable basic payment accounts in the EU due to a number of factors, including: affordability, awareness, documentation/excessive de-risking issues as well as a lack of willingness by financial institutions to proactively offer and inform consumers about these products. The report includes four key recommendations for EU policymakers: 1. Mandate basic payment accounts to be free for vulnerable consumers 2. Mandate the offering of basic payment accounts as the default option 3. Enable the opening of basic payment accounts for consumers lacking proper documentation with the proviso that their accounts have more limited features and stricter monitoring requirements 4. Introduce robust and more prescriptive awareness raising measures by firms and Member States Download the FULL REPORT: https://www.finance-watch.org/policy-portal/retail-inclusion/report-breaking-down-barriers-to-basic-payment-accounts-in-the-eu/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPEAKERS - Peter Norwood, Senior Research and Advocacy Officer, Finance Watch. - Dr. Duygu Damar-Blanken, Research Associate, Institut für Finanzdienstleistungen e.v. ERN ReCONNET
Short description The aim of this webinar is to solve all those questions about EDS from the patient and caregiver community that remain unclear to them. The webinar is driven by patients, and it is meant to be interactive. The questions are previously collected through a survey launched by the EDS DG, and answered live by experts. Both experts and ePAG advocates in the DG can prepare the contents ahead of time. In addition, the chat is open for interaction and new questions that are raised are also to be answered. Speaker Prof. Fransiska Malfait is an associate professor affiliated with the Center for Medical Genetics (CMGG) at Ghent University Hospital and the Department for Biomolecular Medicine at Ghent University, Belgium. She has a master’s degree in medicine (Ghent University, 2000), and a doctoral degree in Medical Sciences (Ghent University, 2007). She trained as a rheumatologist (certified in 2009) and geneticist (certified in 2012). Her research focuses on three main topics: - Unraveling the molecular basis of heritable connective tissue disorders (HCTD), with a special focus on the Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and other hypermobility-related disorders, and studying their natural history and genotype-phenotype correlations - Elucidating molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying HCTD pathogenesis, using an integrated approach of in vitro and in vivo techniques, on tissue samples of humans and animal models (zebrafish, mice) - Studying prevalence, nature and pathophysiologic mechanisms of pain in EDS patients and in relevant animal models. UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (198 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. # # #UNClimateChange

Trans European Polic...
While national differences must be acknowledged in our pursuit of the European project, common challenges faced by the European Union must be addressed jointly: through our shared identity, interests and values we can work together to tackle Europe’s immediate and future priorities. In 1974, both the European Council (EUCO) and the Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA) came into being. The former created itself on the impetus of the Heads of State or Government, and has ever since played a crucial role in the story of European integration. The latter was the result of leading European experts from Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom coming together to form an association capable of exchanging knowledge and collaborating on EU affairs research. Fifty years later, the first research network on European affairs – TEPSA – has 49 Member Institutes in 37 European countries. On the occasion of TEPSA’s and the EUCO’s 50th anniversaries, we hosted a public conference “Forging the Future of Europe” on 28 May at the Fondation Universitaire in Brussels. The public conference began with a short introduction on TEPSA at 50: “The Past, Present, and Future of Pan-European Knowledge Exchanges”, which took stock of TEPSA’s role in European affairs, featuring keynote speeches by people closely involved in TEPSA’s history throughout the past half century. _____________ TEPSA Website: https://www.tepsa.eu/ TEPSA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tepsaeu/ TEPSA LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/tepsabrussels/ TEPSA Twitter: https://x.com/tepsaeu TEPSA Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tepsa.eu Music: Worakls, 22 September 2014, Salzburg, Hungry music This video is co-funded by the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme of the European Union Co-funded by the European Union. This week the European Investment Bank Group announced several new investments: To reinforce health infrastructure in Castilla y León, to support SMEs in Finland as well as new technology, to refurbish mobile phones, and to boost the green economy in Italy’s Veneto region. We welcomed the re-opening of a school in Ukraine and a much safer learning environment for more than 200 students. Our teams also participated in many international events, on increasing the competitiveness of the Greek economy, in Athens, on green hydrogen innovation in Dresden, on resilience of countries hit hard by climate change, at the United Nations Conference on Small Island Developing States, in Antigua and Barbuda, and on business opportunities between European, Latin American and Caribbean companies, at the Inter-American Development Bank’s European chapter meeting, in Madrid. We have approved a donation to support humanitarian assistance to children suffering the Middle East conflict through our philanthropic arm, the EIB institute. And finally, we launched the EIB Group's new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion approach. Respect is at the heart of European values. Podcast: What is the Future of EU-China Relations?
30 May 2024
IIEA
Against the backdrop of increased geopolitical tensions, the relationship between the EU, its Member States, and China has continued to remain of significant importance. As the United States' relationship with China has deteriorated, the EU has increasingly sought to chart its own course vis a vis China, seeking partnerships where beneficial while ensuring its own interests are looked after. In this IIEA discussion, Finbarr Bermingham reflects on the present state of the EU's relationship with China, its challenges and opportunities, and explores what the future holds for the EU-China Relationship. About the Speaker: Finbarr Bermingham is a Brussels-based correspondent covering Europe's relationship with China. He is the Senior Europe Correspondent for the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post, a role he has held since 2021. Over the last decade, he has reported on China through a number of different lenses. Over seven years in Hong Kong he chronicled the Chinese trade economy through the Trump years and Covid-19. Since coming to Brussels, he has charted the downward spiral in EU-China ties following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He regularly appears on broadcast media and has won and been nominated for awards for his reporting and podcasting.

EMEA Webinar: Equal Regional Partnerships to Secure the Green Energy Transition in the Mediterranean
30 May 2024
EMEA Think Tank
In the European Union (EU) and its Southern Neighbourhood, particularly in the Mediterranean region, energy security has emerged as a critical issue impacting every facet of daily life, from transportation and water and waste management to agriculture and industry as well as to healthcare and education. Both regions are significantly hampered by an overdependence on fossil fuels which not only contributes to global climate change but also places the regions at the mercy of the unpredictable global fossil fuel market, given their status as net importers of energy. Therefore, transitioning towards renewable energy sources is not just imperative for combating climate change and ensuring energy security; it also represents a strategic opportunity for the EU to strengthen its relationships with Southern Neighbourhood countries by collaborating on green energy initiatives. Neither the EU nor its Southern Neighbourhood can independently accomplish a green transition. This webinar is motivated by the recent study, Strengthening EU-Southern Neighbourhood Relations: The Imperative of Equal Partnerships in the Green Energy Transition, published by EMEA and Bertelsmann Stiftung. The study highlights the importance of green partnerships and collaboration on green energy uptake as a strategic effort to achieve regional resilience, ensure future energy security, and safeguard the environment and provides 3 key recommendations to achieve this. Firstly, the authors argue for the strengthening of available financial tools such as NDICI, ESFD+, Global Gateway, and the Economic Investment Plan for the new Agenda for the Mediterranean, ensuring they are transparent and available to all stakeholders. Secondly, foster innovation and capacity building by launching initiatives within existing frameworks such as ERASMUS+ to bolster green skills and facilitate educational exchanges and knowledge transfer. And finally, ensure community engagement is at the heart of green policy by creating formal platforms for local participation in the planning and implementation of green projects. The study advocates for an approach centred on equity, ensuring that the transition to renewable energy addresses both the EU’s environmental and energy security needs while catalyzing economic development and sustainability in the Southern Neighbourhood. The aim of this webinar is to delve deeper into each of the three policy recommendations with key stakeholders from across the region, considering opportunities and barriers to strengthening such partnerships across the Mediterranean. The webinar is organised by the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association (EMEA) in collaboration with Bertelsmann Stiftung, and will take place on Thursday 6th June 2024, 15:00-16:30 CET.

Join us in our call to the European Union to place culture at the heart of its political vision and ambition for years to come. Why? Because in a polarised world, culture unites us and brings us together, culture is how we exchange ideas, culture ignites citizens’ hearts and fuels their minds, culture represents what we want for the future of our societies. Without culture, the very future of Europe is under threat. Culture is not only a part of the European project: it is its beating heart. But culture hardly features in discussions on the future of our continent. That is why we call for a Cultural Deal for Europe: for culture to be included in the EU’s funding programmes, sustainable development strategies, relations with the rest of the world, vision for our future We have created a union of states and institutions. We still need to craft a union of values and people. Can we also count on you to help us place culture at the heart of Europe? This analysis of lamb's performance within retail and the typical profile of a lamb shopper was carried out to better inform the industry on the impact of events on lamb's demand and which sector of society the growth is seen in. There were 3 key results: - Lamb is important to consumers around Easter, with increased demand for roasting joints in part due to the greater volumes on promotion. - Older shoppers tend to purchase more lamb although recently we have seen increased demand from middle aged consumers. - Greater lamb volumes around Easter are unlikely to be maintained throughout 2024 due to the cost-of-living crisis. Out-of-home volumes are also predicted to struggle versus 2023. Policymakers in the United States, and to a lesser extent in Europe, are trying different tactics aimed at derisking, decoupling, and homeshoring global value chains. As a result, trade is becoming regionalized to a certain extent. But many other countries are still seeing the value of international trade and are concluding regional or bilateral free trade agreements with each other to facilitate trade and market access. How is global trade viewed from the perspective of such countries, for example Mexico and New Zealand, members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Transpacific Partnership (CPTPP)? The public conference included the panel “50 years of the European Council“ which featured a conversation between former members of the EUCO and researchers to discuss the institution’s role and influence in shaping the last 50 years of European integration. _____________ TEPSA Website: https://www.tepsa.eu/ TEPSA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tepsaeu/ TEPSA LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/tepsabrussels/ TEPSA Twitter: https://x.com/tepsaeu TEPSA Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tepsa.eu Music: Worakls, 22 September 2014, Salzburg, Hungry music This video is co-funded by the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme of the European Union Co-funded by the European Union. Europe’s new rocket Ariane 6 is set to launch soon. 🚀 On its first flight to space, Ariane 6 is offering a ride to miniature satellites, known as CubeSats. ISTSat from Portugal, and ³Cat-4 from Spain, are two of Ariane 6’s passengers. Both satellites were developed by students participating in our Fly Your Satellite! programme, one of the several hands-on programmes for university students offered by ESA Education. ISTSat is the first Portuguese CubeSat built by students. It will track aircraft from space using a smaller, lower power Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast system, which is the technology that enables websites like Flight Radar. ³Cat-4 from the Technical University of Catalonia combines a radiometer, a reflectometer and an Automatic Identification System into one payload that will perform Earth Observation experiments. The students visited Exolaunch’s Berlin headquarters to perform the integration of their satellites, where they installed ISTSat-1 and ³Cat-4 into their deployer. 📹 ESA - European Space Agency #ESA #Ariane6 #CubeSat

space Fly across Nili Fossae with ESA’s Mars Express
Fly across Nili Fossae with ESA’s Mars Express
30 May 2024
European Space Agenc...
Mars’s surface is covered in all manner of scratches and scars. Its many marks include the fingernail scratches of Tantalus Fossae, the colossal canyon system of Valles Marineris, the oddly orderly ridges of Angustus Labyrinthus, and the fascinating features captured in today’s video release from Mars Express: the cat scratches of Nili Fossae. Nili Fossae comprises parallel trenches hundreds of metres deep and several hundred kilometres long, stretching out along the eastern edge of a massive impact crater named Isidis Planitia. This new video features observations from Mars Express's High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). It first flies northwards towards and around these large trenches, showing their fractured, uneven appearance, before turning back to head southwards. It ends by zooming out to a ‘bird’s eye’ view, with the landing site of NASA’s Perseverance rover, Jezero Crater, visible in the lower-middle part of the final scene. (You can explore this crater further via ESA’s interactive map.) The trenches of Nili Fossae are actually features known as ‘graben’, which form when the ground sitting between two parallel faults fractures and falls away. As the graben seem to curve around Isidis Planitia, it’s likely that they formed as Mars’s crust settled following the formation of the crater by an incoming space rock hitting the surface. Similar ruptures – the counterpart to Nili Fossae – are found on the other side of the crater, and named Amenthes Fossae. Scientists have focused on Nili Fossae in recent years due to the impressive amount and diversity of minerals found in this area, including silicates, carbonates, and clays (many of which were discovered by Mars Express’s OMEGA instrument). These minerals form in the presence of water, indicating that this region was very wet in ancient martian history. Much of the ground here formed over 3.5 billion years ago, when surface water was abundant across Mars. Scientists believe that water flowed not only across the surface here but also beneath it, forming underground hydrothermal flows that were heated by ancient volcanoes. Because of what it could tell us about Mars’s ancient and water-rich past, Nili Fossae was considered as a possible landing site for NASA’s Curiosity rover, before the rover was ultimately sent to Gale Crater in 2012. Another mission, NASA’s Perseverance rover, was later sent to land in the nearby Jezero Crater, visible at the end of this video. Mars Express has visited Nili Fossae before, imaging the region’s graben system back in 2014. The mission has orbited the Red Planet since 2003, imaging Mars’s surface, mapping its minerals, studying its tenuous atmosphere, probing beneath its crust, and exploring how various phenomena interact in the martian environment. For more from the orbiter and its HRSC, see ESA's Mars Express releases. Disclaimer: This video is not representative of how Mars Express flies over the surface of Mars. See processing notes below. Processing notes: The video is centred at 23°N, 78°E. It was created using Mars Chart (HMC30) data, an image mosaic made from single-orbit observations from Mars Express’s HRSC. This mosaic was combined with topography derived from a digital terrain model of Mars to generate a three-dimensional landscape. For every second of the movie, 62.5 separate frames are rendered following a pre-defined camera path. The vertical exaggeration is three-fold. Atmospheric effects – clouds and haze – have been added, and start building up at a distance of 50 km. In this special episode of Shine On Policycast in the lead up to the EU elections 2024, our Deputy CEO Dries Acke visits the European Parliament in Brussels for a sit down chat with MEP Niels Fuglsang. MEP Fuglsang shares his views on how to keep momentum for the green transition in the EU, including how to support a competitive solar industry in Europe, and how to engage citizens in the deployment of renewables.

European Investment Bank
Even amidst war, Ukraine continues to implement crucial infrastructure initiatives in the field of education. One such initiative is the “Ukraine Higher Education” project, which is financed by the European Investment Bank, among other donors. This project aims to improve the energy efficiency of Ukrainian universities, bringing significant benefits not only to students and teachers but also to the country as a whole. The “Ukraine Higher Education” project involves the comprehensive energy-efficient modernization of 71 buildings in 16 universities, with 13 of these financed by a EUR 120 million loan from the EIB. Despite the ongoing war, the project has already entered an active phase of construction work in some cities. Modernizing educational buildings and dormitories will enable living, working, and studying in these facilities while also saving electricity, which is currently crucial for the country. Education is a fundamental pillar for the future of Ukraine. Investing in education is essential to equip young Ukrainians with the skills and knowledge they need to drive innovation, support democratic values, and contribute effectively to their country’s reconstruction and development on its path to the EU. --------------------------------- Visit our website: https://www.eib.org Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EuropeanInvestmentBank Twitter: https://twitter.com/eib LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-investment-bank Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/europeaninvestmentbank/
