The Tijuana Sloughs produce some of the best big waves on the West Coast and was a historic proving ground for big wave surfers since the late 1930s. However, these waves often go unridden today due to the imminent danger of waterborne illnesses. Author and surf historian Richard Kenvin shares some history of the Tijuana Sloughs and its impact on surf culture. A pillar in the San Diego surf community, Richard has been passionately advocating to end ocean pollution at our border beaches for decades. The WWFEU European P...
On 23 March 2024, millions of people around the world will celebrate Earth Hour, the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment. This year, we are going beyond the symbolic gesture of turning off lights. We are on a mission to turn a single Earth Hour into millions of hours filled with action and awareness, all aimed at protecting our planet. WWF EU is using Earth Hour to highlight the importance of our European nature and shine a spotlight on what’s at stake in the upcoming EU elections. European communities have been hit hard by the consequences of extreme weather, like the wildfires that wreaked havoc last summer. In addition to the climate crisis, various environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss and EU’s fossil fuel reliance are negatively impacting our everyday lives. The outcome of the 2024 European elections will determine the future of many citizens and have an enormous impact on the environment and climate. European policy-makers have the opportunity to act for the benefit of our planet and protect us! Ahead of 9 June, when millions of citizens will cast their votes, WWF EU’s Director, Ester Asin, has used this opportunity to remind European policy-makers of the commitments they should make to protect our natural world. #BiggestHourForEarth #EarthHour #MyHourForEarth

UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (197 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. # # #UNClimateChange

Extreme weather events such as storms, landslides, river floods and coastal phenomena have threatened and damaged many different regions across Ireland. These events, while rare and often short-lived, can have a devastating impact on critical infrastructure systems. As a result of climate change, these events are becoming more frequent and more intense, affecting not only physical infrastructure but also the environment and society as a whole. Using risk-based approaches in assessing the impacts of extreme weather events and climate change is a well-established method of identifying the most vulnerable infrastructure, assessing the risks posed to that infrastructure and developing strategies to minimise those risks.

In this episode of Green Deal – Big Deal?, we tackle the complex world of natural resources, a topic that underpins many aspects of Europe's ambition for a green future. In conversation with guests Janez Potočnik, Co-chair of the International Resources Panel, and Florika Fink-Hooijer, Director-General of DG Environment, hosts Aaron Best and Ewa Iwaszuk discuss how the use of natural resources is closely linked to the climate and biodiversity crises, highlighting the global nature of resource use and its impacts. The episode touches on the European Green Deal's approach to resource management, emphasizing the need for a systemic perspective that considers the interconnectedness of resource use, environmental impacts, and economic activity. Florika Fink-Hooijer shares her views on the importance of understanding the links between climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and resource depletion and advocates for sustainable and efficient resource use and extraction as a means to tackle these interconnected challenges. Janez Potočnik provides a global perspective on the issue, discussing the work of the International Resources Panel and the upcoming Global Resource Outlook. He stresses the importance of a systems-based approach to address resource challenges, moving beyond GDP growth as a measure of success to focus on meeting human needs more efficiently and sustainably. The conversation also explores the European Union's role in leading global resource policy and the circular economy. We discuss the geopolitical and economic implications of resource scarcity, the importance of resilience and sustainability in policy making, and the potential of the European Green Deal to inspire global action towards a more sustainable use of resources. Finally, the episode addresses the critical role of global cooperation in managing resources, highlighting the need for policies that support sustainable development and ensure that resource use is aligned with environmental goals. Are you working on the environmental risk assessment of biocides? This webinar gives an overview on the new ECHA guidance on the assessment of risks to bees from the use of biocides. The new guidance was prepared by a group of experts from EU countries and ECHA. It outlines a new approach for a quantitative risk assessment of bees which has been missing in the current ECHA guidance for environmental risk assessment. The methodology is based on revised EFSA guidance on the risk assessment of plant protection products on bees (Apis mellifera, Bombus spp. and solitary bees), published in May 2023. In addition to the overall risk assessment scheme, the webinar will address new information requirements, exposure assessment from the use of biocides and specific aspects of bee risk assessment in comparison to the standard environmental assessment of biocides. Droughts are pervasive and hazardous events that impact multiple domains, including agriculture, water resource management, ecological management, infrastructure, waterway navigation and forestry. A drought in Ireland in 2018, had severe socio-economic and environmental impacts across sectors: agriculture suffered from reduced grass growth, fodder shortages and decreased crop yields, peatlands faced increased wildfire risk and ecological degradation and water management was challenging amid supply issues. In addition, canals, waterways, and rivers experienced weed growth, navigation problems, fishing restrictions and reduced fish health and forestry saw increased tree deaths, especially in peatland plantations. The CROSSDRO project collated a network of river flow gauges across Europe, covering the period 1962–2017, for the analysis of hydrological drought.

With the FAO reporting a loss of over 420 million hectares of forest from 1990 to 2020, and the IPCC linking 23% of greenhouse gas emissions to land use changes, this regulation is a key step in combating deforestation. The EUDR not only aligns with EU corporate sustainability and due diligence requirements but also poses significant challenges for supply chains, cost management, and global trade dynamics. Join us to explore how this regulation impacts companies and the global effort towards sustainable, deforestation-free supply chains.

Regulatory Leverage: How Can the EU Foster a Green Investment Shift?

The investment challenge is fundamental to mobilizing financial resources for the transformation toward climate neutrality. Every investment decision today locks us into a specific future - we must be careful about directing investment flows meaningfully. Maximizing green investments and providing predictability for economic actors need coordination at EU level and policies effectively promoting the transformation towards climate neutrality. Key policies should consider, among others, a long-term climate investment plan, securing adequate public funding and making sure the banking sector is implementing the existing regulations properly. What policies do we need to promote investment and finance in support of the EU’s climate ambition? In this 4th episode, together with investment and finance experts Julie Evain (I4CE) and Thomas Pellerin-Carlin (I4CE), we uncover the essential role of investment in climate policy by examining the EU’s role in mobilizing green investments for a resilient climate-neutral economy. We discuss how EU policies can provide predictability to economic actors and build a long-term vision towards climate neutrality. We also explore the role of the banking sector and the use of banks’ transition plans to make sure banks consider climate related risks and direct investments properly. Muncke, J. et al. (2023) “A vision for safer food contact materials: Public health concerns as drivers for improved testing.” Environment International. DOI: 10.1016/j.envint.2023.108161 Food contact materials (FCMs) and food contact articles are ubiquitous in today’s globalized food system. Chemicals migrate from FCMs into foodstuffs, so called food contact chemicals (FCCs), but current regulatory requirements do not sufficiently protect public health from hazardous FCCs because only individual substances used to make FCMs are tested and mostly only for genotoxicity while endocrine disruption and other hazard properties are disregarded. Indeed, FCMs are a known source of a wide range of hazardous chemicals, and they likely contribute to highly prevalent non-communicable diseases. FCMs can also include non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), which often are unknown and therefore not subject to risk assessment. To address these important shortcomings, we outline how the safety of FCMs may be improved by (1) testing the overall migrate, including (unknown) NIAS, of finished food contact articles, and (2) expanding toxicological testing beyond genotoxicity to multiple endpoints associated with non-communicable diseases relevant to human health. To identify mechanistic endpoints for testing, we group chronic health outcomes associated with chemical exposure into Six Clusters of Disease (SCOD) and we propose that finished food contact articles should be tested for their impacts on these SCOD. Research should focus on developing robust, relevant, and sensitive in-vitro assays based on mechanistic information linked to the SCOD, e.g., through Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) or Key Characteristics of Toxicants. Implementing this vision will improve prevention of chronic diseases that are associated with hazardous chemical exposures, including from FCMs.

At COP28, Former President Mary Robinson shared messages on climate action, climate justice and human rights. UN Climate Change on Twitter: twitter.com/UNFCCC UN Climate Change on Instagram: instagram.com/UNclimatechange UN Climate Change on Facebook: facebook.com/UNclimatechange The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (198 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
