Whole genome sequencing was crucial in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic—from real-time monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 spread and evolution, to guiding public health responses, treatments, and vaccine development. Building on this, Struelens et al. advocate for integration of pathogen genomic data and epidemiological data into globally interconnected One Health surveillance systems. Their lead article outlines necessary enablers for deploying real-time genomic surveillance of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance worldwide—including data-sharing platforms, new sequencing technologies, and cross-sector collaborations. Refusing AI: How Journalists Avoid Falling for AI’s Hype with Dr Tomás Dodds. Following a year-long series of interviews with journalists and newsworkers, this presentation draws from the concept of technological refusal to understand how journalists are anticipating and appropriating AI systems in their newsrooms. Refusal can take two forms. On the one hand, it can signal the withdrawal from engaging with certain technologies. “I will not work with AI.” On the other, refusal does not have to be a conversation-ender. As my research shows, journalists are, on an informed basis, refusing to engage with artificial intelligence systems on the terms set by third-party stakeholders. In doing so, journalists are opening the door to have a different conversation: A conversation about how to engage with these systems differently. Journalists are imagining new ways of being with AI systems, auditing these technologies not as individuals but as a well-informed collective. In doing so, journalists’ refusal is an act of design that informs how these technologies are being appropriated in their newsrooms. In this talk, I present results from different research projects that identify not only shortcomings inside newsrooms in the form of knowledge silos and low media literacy but also strategies aimed at generating new opportunities to use refusal as a gatekeeping strategy to improve their work. Tomás Dodds is an Assistant Professor in Journalism and New Media at Leiden University and a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. He is also a researcher in the AI, Media & Democracy Lab in the Netherlands and the Artificial Intelligence and Society Hub [IA+SIC] in Chile. Tomás’ current research interests focus on artificial intelligence and automation in the media sector, immersive technologies, civic data science, and governance of technologies and the Internet.

Food for thought: Listeria monocytogenes through the food factory with Oleksii Omelchenko

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is the third-leading cause of death from foodborne pathogens and is associated with contamination of food at production facilities. Biofilm formation is one of the mechanisms that Lm possess to survive food industry disinfectants and persist in manufacturing environments. Prolonged exposure to sub-inhibitory concentrations of the commonly applied disinfectant benzalkonium chloride (BC) results in emergence of BC tolerant Lm strains. However, there is limited understanding of how Lm evolve in the context of biofilms in response to sub-inhibitory concentrations of BC. Biofilm evolution model was then used, which pairs prolonged exposure to sub-inhibitory BC concentrations with whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to identify mutations in genes/pathways that improve the overall fitness of Lm in the context of biofilm formation and tolerance towards BC. Key genetic traits correlating to evolution were identified using a range of bioinformatic tools. Currently, Oleksii and colleagues are in the process of connecting phenotypic and genotypic data to identify more genes/pathways responsible for improved fitness and increased tolerance to BC. === Biography === Oleksii is working towards his PhD at Quadram institute, where he is investigating how Listeria monocytogenes adapts to the common stresses of food factory environments to establish highly resilient reservoirs. Before this Oleksii obtained an MRes qualification from Imperial College, where he completed two projects. In the first project he investigated the effects of broad-spectrum antibiotics on the production of metabolites by gut microbiota and in the second he studied toxin-inner tube interactions in T6SS. Oleksii's first research experience comes from his placement year at the University of Barcelona where he was investigating the effects of transcription elongation factors on the production of biofilms in Salmonella. === #FoodForThought #FoodborneIllness #Listeria

Join us for a first look at the Climate Bonds Agri-Foods Deforestation & Conversion Free Sourcing Criteria which serve as a procurement guide for aligning food sourcing strategies with 1.5°C climate goals, helping to green the financial sector. This criteria includes the establishment of clear dates to limit the timeframe of deforested-links products entering global supply chains and strong guidance on traceability and disclosure requirements, in coherence with new policy regulations driving changes in the market. In particular, the new criteria ensures consistency with EU Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) and guide those aiming for the EU market for early awareness and adherence. Cut-off date established is 31 December 2020, supply chain of certifiable entities should be free from deforestation of natural forest and conversion of natural ecosystem. The criteria have a clear focus on climate and biodiversity impacts, but it also include guidelines to ensure just transitions, including human rights and the rights of indigenous peoples. The criteria is informed by other standards in the market and recent policy developments, with an aim to facilitate much needed progress towards food supply chains protective of climate and biodiversity. The DCF Sourcing Criteria is targeted at entities: Companies operating within the food value chain which source agriculture commodities that are land-based and whose production might involve land use change from natural ecosystems (e.g. forests, peatlands, savanna). Assets, Use of Proceeds, Entities and Sustainability-Linked Debt instruments that enable or service the goal of deforestation and natural ecosystem conversion free sourcing (e.g. entities operating in the land-use change monitoring or traceability system space) can be certified under Climate Bonds Standard as 1.5ºC Aligned for eligible activities.

The monumental task of achieving a decarbonised economy in Europe by 2050 calls for use of all available tools. The complexity of this transition requires solutions that can meet multiple goals, such as decarbonising transport and fostering integration of electric vehicles into the grid. Failure to think broadly will result in slow progress, at a dear cost to consumers. An innovative technology that offers strong potential to decarbonise transport, support the energy system and reduce cost is vehicle-to-grid or vehicle-to-X solutions. On 25 April 2024, the Electrification Academy welcomed Stefan Doerig, Head of Regulatory Affairs, and Aby Chacko, Head of Energy Services at tiko Energy Solutions. They shared their experiences with these V2G or V2X solutions, detailing V2X Suisse, a pioneering project in Switzerland with the aim to determine the technical feasibility of offering grid services and to assess the added value that V2G technology can provide compared to conventional smart charging. AI is set to revolutionise the global economy, particularly in labor markets, presenting both opportunities and obstacles. Advanced economies, with their focus on cognitive-intensive roles, face higher exposure to AI but also stand to benefit more. In contrast, emerging market and developing economies lag behind in readiness, potentially exacerbating income inequality. The impact of AI on labor income inequality hinges on the extent of displacement versus complementarity with high-income workers. Priorities for harnessing AI's potential vary based on development levels, with advanced economies focusing on innovation and regulation, while less prepared economies prioritise digital infrastructure and skills development. Regardless, ensuring inclusivity through social safety nets and retraining programs is imperative for all economies. At this event, we discussed strategies for maximising AI benefits while mitigating its potential negative consequences on income distribution and labor markets.

After four years of research and countless exchange opportunities with practitioners and policy-makers, the CINTRAN community has reached its final set of milestones. The research and activities done by project partners sheds light onto multiple aspects that can help coal+ intensive regions move forward for a just transition. For this reason, we want to invite our community one last time to dive into the final flagship outputs of the project and reflect on how they can be translated into action adapted for your local contexts. At this tenth and final online event, the project coordinator of the CINTRAN project will present the main insights, many of which were already voiced to key decision-makers at the European, national, regional, and local levels of governance during our final stakeholder event in early March. We also will give the floor to the great team that has been working behind the scenes to produce all these main publications. We have prepared a round of four brief pitches to present some of the flagship outputs: inventory of coping strategies and related narrative maps; the Just Transition Readiness Tool (JT:READY) for regions who want to undertake or review their own strategy; research on compensation policies at the European and international scales; and the 4 key principles drawing upon lessons learnt from all publications and the Transition Academy series as a whole. The entire CINTRAN capacity-building programme of in-person Academy events and webinars has aimed at practitioners and everyone interested in learning more about the just energy transition in coal+ regions across Europe. Within this final interactive webinar, you will hear directly from principal researchers about their journey and findings within the CINTRAN project. Thereafter, Matthias Ecke, a German Member of the European Parliament, himself from a coal region, will reflect on the outputs and present his own perspective on the just energy transition across Europe. As usual, participants will be able to pose their thoughts and questions throughout the event, including during a dedicated Q&A session offering a space for multi-regional interaction.

Our oceans are facing a crisis. With the help of #algae there are many ways to tackle these problems and restore our waters. The LOCALITY project develops circular and sustainable value chains from algae, linking industrial players to stimulate co-creation and bring new and innovative algae-based products to regional and global markets while protecting and restoring Europe’s aquatic ecosystems. LOCALITY sets the basis for the market uptake of innovative, socially responsible, and sustainable food, aquafeed ingredients, agriculture, and textile products. For these products algae biomasses and ingredients from side streams and the Baltic and North Seas are used. The project further demonstrate their social and economic benefits, define commercialisation strategies and ensure consumer and market acceptance. Project results, developed technologies, and products to relevant stakeholders, thus fostering the replication of such circular ecosystems are disseminated. World Immunisation Week 2024 | Chief Medical Officer
24 Apr 2024
Department of Health
On World Immunisation Week, as we reflect on the lifesaving impact of vaccines worldwide, the Chief Medical Officer is asking you to check that you and your children are up to date with your vaccines. See https://www.immunisation.ie/ Vaccines protect us all. #EveryDoseCounts TRANSCRIPT: This week is World Immunisation Week, an opportunity to reflect on the importance of our vaccination programmes which protects us against serious diseases. Globally, in the past 50 years, vaccines have saved almost 154 million lives. That’s six people every minute for five decades. Vaccinations have eradicated smallpox, reduced polio by 99% and reduced infant deaths by 40%. And they are evolving all the time. Now, we have a new vaccine that can prevent cancers and we hope to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040. In Ireland, the childhood immunisation programme provides children with a range of vaccines, including the MMR vaccine. This is particularly important now, as measles cases have increased in Ireland in recent months, so please get your vaccine if you are eligible. We have also seen an increase in pertussis or whooping cough. So, I strongly recommend all pregnant women to get your free vaccine which offers vital protection for newborn babies in those first few months. In the past few years, with the emergence of COVID, we've seen how new vaccines are incredibly effective in reducing the risk of serious illness and death. This week, I want to remind all those aged 80 years or over and others who are eligible to top up your protection with the COVID Spring booster. I'd also like to remind parents of first year children that some routine vaccines are being offered by school vaccination teams, so keep an eye out for the HSE Consent Pack in your child's schoolbag. We get vaccinated not just for ourselves and for our children, but to protect those around us too. If you want to know more about vaccinations available for you and your family, go to immunisation.ie And remember, every dose counts. Thank you.

Energy security: Markus Rauramo on securing Europe's electricity supply
24 Apr 2024
Eurelectric
In this interview, @Eurelectric 's Vice President and @fortum 's CEO Markus Rauramo, answers questions about Europe's challenge to deliver a reliable supply of electricity, a crucial element to ensure the block's energy security. Why is energy security so important? Modern society needs power. As decarbonisation accelerates, so will the use of clean electricity. It will be present everywhere and this calls for a renewed focus on the security of supply. However, international events in recent years have put our countries’ energy security in jeopardy. Global geopolitical tensions, market interventions, extreme weather, cyber sabotage and increasing power demand are putting energy security at risk. Meanwhile, our national energy systems are evolving with renewable energy sources and technology developments bringing higher variability and growing decentralisation. This necessitates a change in the way we think about the energy system. Yet, European Member States’ present a variety of national and regional situations. Each challenge has its own specificities which reflect the reality on the ground and require tailored solutions that work for unique circumstances. Euroquestions #78 | How to understand and support citizen engagement in the EU energy transition?
24 Apr 2024
Jacques Delors Institute
The European clean energy transition is speeding up. During the 2019-2024 European mandate, extensive regulatory progress has been made in the form of the European Green Deal and through the energy and climate legislative package ‘Fit for 55’. As we enter the implementation phase of these policies, understanding and supporting citizen engagement in the energy transition is becoming more and more important. To this end, the EnergyPROSPECTS project has explored the potential of energy citizenship to contribute to the fulfilment of the EU's climate and energy objectives. Energy citizenship provides a useful lens to capture the diversity of citizen engagement in the energy transition. The concept denotes different forms of civic involvement and engagement in the fields of energy production, distribution, and consumption, as well as in the governance of the energy transition. It can be practised at different levels of action, through different constellations of actors. The clean energy transition is becoming everyone’s business. What does this mean for citizens’ roles in the European energy transition? Building on three years of research with eight other organisations across Europe, our research fellow Karin Thalberg, presents key findings that guide us towards a common framework for citizen involvement in the European energy transition.

NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Hungary 🇭🇺 is hard at work
24 Apr 2024
NATO
NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Hungary is hard at work in the east of the Alliance, keeping NATO ready to deter aggression and, if necessary, defend the Allied territory. The battlegroup is one of four new units established in the wake of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022. Comprised of Croatian, Italian and Turkish troops, with the Hungarian Defence Forces in the lead, the battlegroup conducts military exercises, which boost the level of familiarisation amongst these Allied troops and the effectiveness of working together. NATO’s battlegroups were first established in 2016 in response to the increased instability and insecurity along NATO’s periphery, following a decision made by Allies at the 2016 Warsaw Summit to reinforce the eastern part of the Alliance with battalion-sized multinational units. At the 2022 Madrid Summit, Allies committed to doubling the number of units from four to eight, with new battlegroups deploying to Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. Allies also committed to deploy troops to rapidly reinforce these battlegroups if need be, up to brigade level. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and subsequent state laws that criminalize abortion, patients are at heightened risk that their health care providers will turn over sensitive reproductive health information to law enforcement for abortion-related investigations. In response to this risk, on Monday, April 22, 2024, the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Civil Rights issued a new rule to support reproductive health privacy under HIPAA. This CEER Customer Conference 2024 served as a comprehensive exploration of recently approved legislation packages and their optimal implementation by EU energy stakeholders. The conference unfolded across three essential pillars – consumer protection, consumer empowerment, and decarbonisation – ensuring a comprehensive and consumer-centric approach to the challenges and opportunities presented by the current energy environment. The three dedicated sessions comprehensively covered electricity, gas, and heating issues, with a sharp focus on implementing and reinforcing consumer rights. Among others, the exploration extended to the concept of energy sharing, underlining collaborative approaches that amplify the impact of individual efforts. Together these topics serve as a compass for navigating the multifaceted landscape of consumer-driven innovation and the imperative to decarbonise residential energy consumption. Discussions also touched upon the CEER-BEUC 2030 ASPIRE Vision for Energy Consumers that envisions a transformative future where consumers not only comprehend the environmental impacts of their energy usage but are also equipped with the tools to independently evaluate the climate properties of various energy products, actions, or behaviours. This forward-looking vision aligns with a sustainable economy that delivers Affordability, Simplicity, Protection, Inclusiveness, Reliability, and Empowerment for all consumers.

Participatory Turns: The bumpy roads to recognition of participatory approaches in the social sciences, and lessons for citizen science The integration of societal participation into the production of scientific knowledge stands as a core principle within citizen science. Although participatory methods have a long tradition in the social sciences — exemplified by participatory action research in fields like sociology, education, and anthropology — a historical examination unveils the intricacies and obstacles tied to these methods' acceptance and application. Historically, participatory research often found recognition only on the fringes of academic discourse, encountering structural and power-related barriers. Moreover, the demarcation between political engagement and social science research was a recurring dilemma.
