In an interview with SCAN TV, Bernd Schäfer, CEO and Managing Director of EIT RawMaterials, discusses the new Regional Innovation Center for mineral raw materials in Albania. The centre aims to position Albania as a key player in Europe's mining sector by attracting investment and boosting the economy. Albania's mineral resources and talent are viewed as significant assets, with the centre working in collaboration with the Albanian government to build a strategy that fosters innovation and encourages investment. Massive MIMO base stations, with their large number of antennas, can use beamforming to communicate with multiple users simultaneously on the same time and frequency resource. However, when user channels are highly correlated, this advantage can be diminished, significantly impacting the spectral efficiency of multi-user beamforming. As users move within a network cell, their channels vary across both time and frequency, which in turn affects their correlation with other users, leading to different optimal groupings of users depending on the specific time-frequency resource. Thus, to maximize spectral efficiency while maintaining fairness among users, the base station must carefully schedule users during each transmission interval. The goal of this challenge is to develop machine learning-based algorithms to address the multi-user beamforming scheduling problem in practical settings. Given the considerable overhead associated with constantly measuring user channels in mobile environments, an efficient solution may need to work with partial or even stale channel data to schedule users effectively in upcoming periods. Thus, machine learning algorithms can be ideal for managing incomplete or old channel data and deriving effective user scheduling strategies that aim to maximize network throughput and fairness. In this webinar, we will discuss this challenge in greater detail. We will present a baseline solution that assumes full channel knowledge, outline the available datasets, and explain the evaluation criteria for the challenge. On 29-30 May 2024, the Tirana Ministerial Conference will celebrate 25 years of the Bologna Process. As we gear up to honour this moment, we invite the EURASHE community at large to reflect with us on the successes and shortcomings of the Bologna Process so far. What have the Bologna Process and Bologna Follow-up Group (BFUG) accomplished? And what can still be improved? After a brief introduction to the Bologna Process, we will hear different perspectives from Higher Education experts and then dive into a discussion with questions from the audience.

Our paper examines the causal impact of economic sanctions on both food prices and food security. Food prices serve as a pivotal gauge of food security, and the enforcement of economic sanctions may compound food security issues in the countries targeted by such measures. The examination of the impact of sanctions on food prices is of paramount importance, especially considering anecdotal evidence suggesting heightened food security concerns in nations subjected to sanctions. To ascertain the existence of a causal link between food prices and sanctions, we employ a two-way fixed-effects approach and leverage the entropy balancing technique, which replicates randomization in observational studies. Our analysis relies on two primary datasets: the recently developed Global Sanctions Database (GSDB) for measuring sanctions and FAOSTAT for evaluating food prices. Our results show that sanctions result in a real term increase in food prices as during the sanctions period, food prices are higher by 0.01-0.014 compared to non-sanctions period. Sanctions contribute to a higher prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) by 1.419-2.083. During the recent European Youth Week kick-off event in Brussels, European Commission’s directorate-general for agriculture and rural development held a breakout session for young farmers, rural activists and twentysomethings interested in a life on the land. The purpose of the session was to learn more about these young people’s aspirations, concerns and perspectives, to better tailor policy in favour of generational renewal. On May 1, 2004, ten countries joined the European Union: Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. It was the biggest enlargement in terms of people and number of countries in the EU's history. Young men and women who were born that same day explain how being born European has impacted their lives.

In times of polarised ideas, widespread disinformation and cross border conflicts, how are we protecting the integrity of European institutions and democracy? Researchers and NGOs all over Europe are studying ways to make societies more resilient to crises and to foreign actors trying to interfere in our democratic processes. Two such researchers are Julia from the Clingendael Institute for International Relations in the Netherlands and Katarina from the Centre for Democracy & Resilience at the GLOBSEC Policy Institute in Slovakia. They specialise in the Western Balkan states and EU accession countries like Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg took to the skies in a German Eurofighter on Thursday 25 April 2024 as part of his visit to the 73 Tactical Air Wing at Laage Air Base in Germany. The Secretary General called his flight “a great experience,” adding the Laage Airbase is “important for NATO, because what they do from here is to educate the best pilots in the world and also to support the different air policing missions, which is important in a more challenging security environment.” During the flight, he witnessed a German tanker refuelling a Swedish JAS Gripen fighter jet, in a demonstration of interoperability and NATO Allies working together

The 5GSC Capacity Building Session 1, “5G Edge Cloud Integration,” kicked off with a welcome from 5GSC-SP Team Lead Frédéric Pujol, followed by insights from Dimitri Jungblut on 5GMEC4EU. Two Call 2 funded projects then highlighted the edge cloud benefits for 5GSC: SmartPortPloce aimed to enhance public services at the Port of Ploce, while ED5GE focused on deploying low-latency, IoT-connected applications. Both presentations discussed project objectives and the replicability of edge cloud benefits. Finally, Gabriel Velicka, Manager for Edge Computing Cloud Services at T-Systems, gave a short overview of T-Systems' technologies in the area of Edge and related benefits. The session finished with a Q&A segment.

Whole genome sequencing was crucial in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic—from real-time monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 spread and evolution, to guiding public health responses, treatments, and vaccine development. Building on this, Struelens et al. advocate for integration of pathogen genomic data and epidemiological data into globally interconnected One Health surveillance systems. Refusing AI: How Journalists Avoid Falling for AI’s Hype with Dr Tomás Dodds. Following a year-long series of interviews with journalists and newsworkers, this presentation draws from the concept of technological refusal to understand how journalists are anticipating and appropriating AI systems in their newsrooms. Refusal can take two forms. On the one hand, it can signal the withdrawal from engaging with certain technologies. “I will not work with AI.” On the other, refusal does not have to be a conversation-ender. As my research shows, journalists are, on an informed basis, refusing to engage with artificial intelligence systems on the terms set by third-party stakeholders. In doing so, journalists are opening the door to have a different conversation: A conversation about how to engage with these systems differently. Journalists are imagining new ways of being with AI systems, auditing these technologies not as individuals but as a well-informed collective. In doing so, journalists’ refusal is an act of design that informs how these technologies are being appropriated in their newsrooms. In this talk, I present results from different research projects that identify not only shortcomings inside newsrooms in the form of knowledge silos and low media literacy but also strategies aimed at generating new opportunities to use refusal as a gatekeeping strategy to improve their work. Tomás Dodds is an Assistant Professor in Journalism and New Media at Leiden University and a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. He is also a researcher in the AI, Media & Democracy Lab in the Netherlands and the Artificial Intelligence and Society Hub [IA+SIC] in Chile. Tomás’ current research interests focus on artificial intelligence and automation in the media sector, immersive technologies, civic data science, and governance of technologies and the Internet.

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is the third-leading cause of death from foodborne pathogens and is associated with contamination of food at production facilities. Biofilm formation is one of the mechanisms that Lm possess to survive food industry disinfectants and persist in manufacturing environments. Prolonged exposure to sub-inhibitory concentrations of the commonly applied disinfectant benzalkonium chloride (BC) results in emergence of BC tolerant Lm strains. However, there is limited understanding of how Lm evolve in the context of biofilms in response to sub-inhibitory concentrations of BC. Biofilm evolution model was then used, which pairs prolonged exposure to sub-inhibitory BC concentrations with whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to identify mutations in genes/pathways that improve the overall fitness of Lm in the context of biofilm formation and tolerance towards BC. Key genetic traits correlating to evolution were identified using a range of bioinformatic tools. Currently, Oleksii and colleagues are in the process of connecting phenotypic and genotypic data to identify more genes/pathways responsible for improved fitness and increased tolerance to BC. === Biography === Oleksii is working towards his PhD at Quadram institute, where he is investigating how Listeria monocytogenes adapts to the common stresses of food factory environments to establish highly resilient reservoirs. Before this Oleksii obtained an MRes qualification from Imperial College, where he completed two projects. In the first project he investigated the effects of broad-spectrum antibiotics on the production of metabolites by gut microbiota and in the second he studied toxin-inner tube interactions in T6SS. Oleksii's first research experience comes from his placement year at the University of Barcelona where he was investigating the effects of transcription elongation factors on the production of biofilms in Salmonella. === #FoodForThought #FoodborneIllness #Listeria

Organized by the Euro-Mediterranean Climate Change Center (CMCC) in close collaboration with the EU Climate Change Adaptation Mission, the European project Climateurope2 celebrated a festival uniting science, services and standards for a climate resilient future from 11 to 13 March 2024. During a short set of interviews amongst climateurope2 project partners, Dr. Grit Martinez together with anthropologist Dr. Werner Krauß from the Sustainability Research Center (artec) gave an interview.

Join us for a first look at the Climate Bonds Agri-Foods Deforestation & Conversion Free Sourcing Criteria which serve as a procurement guide for aligning food sourcing strategies with 1.5°C climate goals, helping to green the financial sector. This criteria includes the establishment of clear dates to limit the timeframe of deforested-links products entering global supply chains and strong guidance on traceability and disclosure requirements, in coherence with new policy regulations driving changes in the market. In particular, the new criteria ensures consistency with EU Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) and guide those aiming for the EU market for early awareness and adherence. Cut-off date established is 31 December 2020, supply chain of certifiable entities should be free from deforestation of natural forest and conversion of natural ecosystem. The criteria have a clear focus on climate and biodiversity impacts, but it also include guidelines to ensure just transitions, including human rights and the rights of indigenous peoples. The criteria is informed by other standards in the market and recent policy developments, with an aim to facilitate much needed progress towards food supply chains protective of climate and biodiversity. The DCF Sourcing Criteria is targeted at entities: Companies operating within the food value chain which source agriculture commodities that are land-based and whose production might involve land use change from natural ecosystems (e.g. forests, peatlands, savanna). Assets, Use of Proceeds, Entities and Sustainability-Linked Debt instruments that enable or service the goal of deforestation and natural ecosystem conversion free sourcing (e.g. entities operating in the land-use change monitoring or traceability system space) can be certified under Climate Bonds Standard as 1.5ºC Aligned for eligible activities.

The monumental task of achieving a decarbonised economy in Europe by 2050 calls for use of all available tools. The complexity of this transition requires solutions that can meet multiple goals, such as decarbonising transport and fostering integration of electric vehicles into the grid. Failure to think broadly will result in slow progress, at a dear cost to consumers. An innovative technology that offers strong potential to decarbonise transport, support the energy system and reduce cost is vehicle-to-grid or vehicle-to-X solutions. On 25 April 2024, the Electrification Academy welcomed Stefan Doerig, Head of Regulatory Affairs, and Aby Chacko, Head of Energy Services at tiko Energy Solutions. They shared their experiences with these V2G or V2X solutions, detailing V2X Suisse, a pioneering project in Switzerland with the aim to determine the technical feasibility of offering grid services and to assess the added value that V2G technology can provide compared to conventional smart charging. Priorities for harnessing AI's potential vary based on development levels, with advanced economies focusing on innovation and regulation, while less prepared economies prioritise digital infrastructure and skills development. Regardless, ensuring inclusivity through social safety nets and retraining programs is imperative for all economies. At this event, we discussed strategies for maximising AI benefits while mitigating its potential negative consequences on income distribution and labor markets.

Our oceans are facing a crisis. With the help of #algae there are many ways to tackle these problems and restore our waters. The LOCALITY project develops circular and sustainable value chains from algae, linking industrial players to stimulate co-creation and bring new and innovative algae-based products to regional and global markets while protecting and restoring Europe’s aquatic ecosystems. LOCALITY sets the basis for the market uptake of innovative, socially responsible, and sustainable food, aquafeed ingredients, agriculture, and textile products. For these products algae biomasses and ingredients from side streams and the Baltic and North Seas are used. The project further demonstrate their social and economic benefits, define commercialisation strategies and ensure consumer and market acceptance. Project results, developed technologies, and products to relevant stakeholders, thus fostering the replication of such circular ecosystems are disseminated.
