Keynote Speaker: Mart Laanpere, Professor of the Centre for Educational Technology, Tallinn University and EDEN DLE Management Board Member Topic: "Building the Digital Education Ecosystem in Estonia, in cooperation between universities, ministry and private sector" Abstract: Estonia is a small, but digitally innovative country. We have been No.1 in Europe when it comes to public digital services (DESI 2018-2021), but also in readiness for digital lifelong learning (CEPS 2019). The foundation for this success helped our education system to cope with COVID-pandemic, but it is a result of a long-term systemic development. In this talk I’ll summarise the key strategies, results and future plans orelated to this continuing effort, focusing specifically on increasing the “smartness” and interoperability of online services for digital learning resources, e-assessment, digital competence development and digital pedagogy. Mart Laanpere is professor in mathematics and computing education in the Centre for Educational Technologies, Tallinn University, Estonia. He received MSc from the University of Twente (NL) and PhD from the Tallinn University. He was a co-founder and long time head of the Centre for Educational Technology in Tallinn University. His main focus in research is conceptual design and analysis of affordances of technology-enhanced learning systems and tools, digital competence modelling and assessment, among others. He is a co-author of national digital competence test and several informatics textbooks for upper-secondary schools. Mart was also member of the steering group for Estonian Lifelong Learning Strategy 2020 where he led the development of the action plan for Digital Turn in Schools. He has been contributing as an expert to various European initiatives related to modeling and assessment of digital competence (DigComp, DigCompEdu, DigCompOrg, SELFIE for Schools, SELFIE for Teachers). Mart has also been consulting digital education innovation programs in Georgia, Serbia and Moldova.

digital AlphaTensor: discovering mathematical algorithms with reinforcement learning | AI for Good Webinar
AlphaTensor: discovering mathematical algorithms with reinforcement learning | AI for Good Webinar
2 Dec 2022
AI for Good
Improving the efficiency of algorithms for fundamental computations has a widespread impact, as it affects the overall speed of a very large amount of computations. Matrix multiplication is one such primitive task, occurring in many systems—from neural networks to scientific computing routines. The automatic discovery of algorithms using machine learning offers the prospect of reaching beyond human intuition and outperforming the current best human-designed algorithms. However, automating the algorithm discovery procedure is intricate, as the space of possible algorithms is enormous. This AI for Good session presents a deep reinforcement learning approach based on AlphaZero for discovering efficient and provably correct algorithms for the multiplication of arbitrary matrices. The agent, AlphaTensor, is trained to play a single-player game where the objective is finding tensor decompositions within a finite factor space. AlphaTensor discovered algorithms that outperform the state-of-the-art complexity for many matrix sizes. Particularly relevant is the case of 4×4 matrices in a finite field, where AlphaTensor’s algorithm improves on Strassen’s two-level algorithm for the first time, to our knowledge, since its discovery 50 years ago. This talk will further showcase the flexibility of AlphaTensor through different use-cases: algorithms with state-of-the-art complexity for structured matrix multiplication and improved practical efficiency by optimizing matrix multiplication for runtime on specific hardware. Our results highlight AlphaTensor’s ability to accelerate the process of algorithmic discovery on a range of problems, and to optimize for different criteria. Climate change and land-use change are increasing the number, frequency, and severity of wildfires worldwide, with a projected 30% rise by the end of 2050. With global temperatures soaring, the need to reduce the risk of wildfires is more important than ever to protect the health of people and ecosystems. Facing this challenge, robots are increasingly helping first responders to detect, monitor and extinguish flames. They are helping to combat blazes in buildings with the possibility of collapsing roofs, and in areas too hot or toxic for human entry and survival. In this AI for Good webinar, discover the next generation of autonomous firefighting robots that work side by side with emergency workers on the front line, reducing risks for firefighters and helping them identify, control and extinguish wildfires with increased safety for humans. #RoboticsforGood #AIforGoodWebinar Speakers: Manon Vermenouze Director of Communications, Public Affairs and CSR Shark Robotics Bart Slager CEO Perspective Robotics Wade White Assistant Chief Los Angeles City Fire Department Join the Neural Network! 👉https://aiforgood.itu.int/neural-network/ The AI for Good networking community platform powered by AI. Recent advances in perception and natural understanding are opening the doors to interactive, embodied agents that perform socially and economically beneficial tasks in human-centered environments. Robots have the potential to empower people across their lives – from the workplace to the home – augmenting human mobility, replacing rote tasks, and increasing access to information. They have arguably yet to deliver on this promise however, because interacting physically with humans in a safe, accessible and socially appropriate way remains exceedingly difficult. This session will discuss how recent advances in AI are accelerating advancements in this space and the challenges that remain. Nature makes extensive use of soft actuators in the from of worms, snakes, octopuses, squid tentacles, elephant trunks and many others. Despite robot hardware still relying mainly on hard components, robots have started to incorporate softness with the use of materials similar to those of living organisms. Inspirated by the elegance, adaptability and efficiency of the natural kingdom, biologically inspired soft robots hold great promise for safer and more flexible interactions since they can adapt their shape and behavior to complex, dynamic environments. For example, soft robots can deform and reform, enabling them to absorb much of the energy derived from a collision. At the crossroad of robotics and biology, join this AI for Good webinar to discover the latest bio-inspired soft robots, their main applications for social good, and the challenges for wider implementation of this next generation of AI-powered robots. Many robotic applications have the potential to help achieve sustainability. AI-powered robots can contribute to sustainability in different sectors, helping to fight climate change, recycling, decreasing waste in manufacturing, minimizing chemicals in farming, etc., as well as in social applications. Although robots hold great promise for advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, the rapid increase in the demand for robots poses important questions regarding sustainable production and the future disposable of robots, ultimately asking whether the use of robots themselves could outbalance any positive impact they are supposed to achieve. Join this AI for Good webinar to discuss these two perspectives and find out if robots are the solution to sustainability and what it takes for a robot to be sustainable. We have less than 10 years to solve the UN SDGs and AI holds great promise to advance many of the sustainable development goals and targets. More than a Summit, more than a movement, AI for Good is presented as a year round digital platform where AI innovators and problem owners learn, build and connect to help identify practical AI solutions to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. AI for Good is organized by ITU in partnership with 40 UN Sister Agencies and co-convened with Switzerland.
