We combine scientific research with policy analysis, connecting our work to decision-makers and civil society in global governance, national public policy, regional cooperation, local planning, and the private sector. We generate and share knowledge that catalyses action, and always take a highly collaborative approach: stakeholder involvement is at the heart of our efforts to build capacity, strengthen institutions, and equip partners for the long term. Making scientific knowledge accessible is a priority. We publish our own series of open-access reports and briefs, alongside articles in leading academic journals, and work creatively through a range of media to ensure that our research is available to those that need it. We convene seminars and conferences that bring together decision-makers, academics, and practitioners to debate key issues and share knowledge, and engage in and inform policy processes, development action, and business practice worldwide. We are committed to transparency and believe that full disclosure of our finances and funding builds trust in our work. Sida is our most substantial donor, but we also receive broad support from development agencies, governments, NGOs, universities, businesses, and financial institutions. SEI is International – SEI is distributed across nine locations around the world, works locally, regionally and globally, and has a diverse international staff. Trusted – both policy-makers and the academic community recognize SEI as an independent and non-partisan institute. Credible – SEI’s research is objective, and supported by a rigorous system of internal and external peer review. Integrated – only joined-up research can solve joined-up problems. SEI places a strong emphasis on making connections across the natural, physical, and social sciences, allowing us to approach sustainability challenges from new angles and offer robust and insightful policy advice.

The construction sector and wood materials have been an essential part of life in both Norway and Sweden, as wood construction is a long-standing tradition in these Nordic countries. However, there are several obstacles that are hampering coordination in the wood construction sector between these two neighbouring countries. Differences in regulations and requirements for construction products and a lack of access to information make trade and business opportunities more difficult across the border and hinder regional integration. 4p1000 Initiative
On the occasion of the UNFCCC COP 28 in Dubaï (United Arab Emirates), the 4 per 1000 Initiative: Soils for Food Security held the 6th 4 per 1000 Initiative Day on Wednesday, November 16th, 2022, in the Dubaï Dusit Conference Hall. The International Initiative 4 per 1000, launched by France on December 1st, 2015, at the COP 21, consists of federating all voluntary stakeholders of the public and private sectors (national governments, local and regional governments, companies, trade organizations, NGOs, research facilities, etc.) under the framework of the Lima-Paris Action Plan (LPAP). The Initiative aims to demonstrate that agriculture, particularly agricultural soils, can play a crucial role in food security and climate change. Supported by solid scientific documentation, this initiative invites all partners to state or implement practical actions on soil carbon storage and the type of practices to achieve this (e.g., agroecology, agroforestry, conservation agriculture, landscape management, etc.). The initiative encourages stakeholders to transition towards a productive, highly resilient agriculture based on the appropriate management of lands and soils, creating jobs and incomes, and ensuring sustainable development.

Webinar: Next steps for offshore energy production
29 Jan 2024
Stockholm Environmen...
This webinar on 29 January, shared new research on the potential of combining offshore wind and hydrogen power, with experts mapping out what should be the next steps. Can multi-purpose platforms in the ocean help us fast-track the expansion of renewable energy production? What are the most promising solutions and what is currently missing for upscaling? At COP28, countries committed to triple renewable energy production by 2030, but that will require massive transformations of the energy sector. In this webinar, we discussed a promising solution: marine platforms that combine multiple uses, for example offshore windfarms that share space with floating solar or wave energy, aquaculture, or hydrogen production. The concept is explored in the policy brief 'Marine multi-use in practice comparing offshore wind and hydrogen production applications'. The authors Guido Mazza and Maria Xylia from the Stockholm Environment Institute described both the potential of these solutions and what is currently holding them back. We also heard from industry leaders, policy experts and regulators who discussed the decisions, incentives, and regulations would they like to see. Should multi-use be part of the ranking criteria in wind projects? Why do we seldom design for multi-functionality? How do we balance local and national interests? The 2023 Production Gap Report finds that governments plan to produce around 110% more fossil fuels in 2030 than would be consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C, and 69% more than would be consistent with 2°C. This comes despite 151 national governments having pledged to achieve net-zero emissions and the latest forecasts which suggest global coal, oil, and gas demand will peak this decade, even without new policies. When combined, government plans would lead to an increase in global coal production until 2030, and in global oil and gas production until at least 2050, creating an ever-widening fossil fuel production gap over time. The 2023 Production Gap Report: “Phasing down or phasing up? Top fossil fuel producers plan even more extraction despite climate promises” is produced by Stockholm Environment Institute, Climate Analytics, E3G, International Institute for Sustainable Development and the UN Environment Programme. The WWFEU European P...
Europe desperately needs strong legislation to restore its nature, protect citizens from climate change-induced disasters and save its economy which is greatly dependent on natural resources. A robust EU Nature Restoration Law could finally bring nature back to Europe, to the benefit of local communities. In Sweden, thousands of hectares of old-growth forests, are being clear-cut each year. They are replaced with planted monocultures, destroying and fragmenting the habitats of many threatened and sensitive species. Tiveden area is an excellent example of a protected old-growth forest but also of the efforts to restore nature in a region where forestry and tourism coexist – with the national park just around the corner. WWF Sweden supports a restoration project with Closer-to-Nature-Forestry in this area, however foresters face multiple challenges with current Swedish forest practices. This video was filmed during a press trip to Tiveden, Sweden on 22-23 May 2023.

The essence of this webinar could be distilled into a single sentence: “Climate change affects everyone, but it does not affect everyone equally.” If only the ways to address this could also be so simply put, so simply devised, and so simply executed. But of course, the issues that are related to this are complex and interwoven. And adaptation itself is an amorphous and evolving thing. In Southern Sweden, cities want to become climate-neutral across a number of municipal services. In seven cities amongst which Malmö and Lund polluting fuels such as petrol, oil and natural gas have been minimised. Decarbonising transportation has been a top priority. Among the various initiatives taken, the municipality of Lund has developed a groundbreaking system for business travel. City employees now have access to a green fleet of vehicles via a booking system. Other initiatives are in the area of heating, transport and construction. Climate change can trigger and transfer impacts across national borders through trade, value chains, business operations, financial investments, security relations and displacement of people. As the climate crisis intensifies, the impacts of climate change in countries all around the world will increasingly present risks to the EU’s foreign policy, trade agreements and financial interests. These are referred to as cascading or transboundary climate risks. The project CASCADES put to the test a series of policy recommendations to manage climate risks originating outside the EU’s borders at a policy validation workshop, gathering the perspectives of representatives from different organizations and countries. Read insights and reflections from the policy-validation workshop: https://www.sei.org/featured/how-can-europe-respond-to-climate-risks/ Upcoming dissemination events: https://www.cascades.eu/events/ Find out more about the CASCADES project: www.sei.org/projects-and-tools/projects/cascades/

Sweden and NATO are long-standing partners, counting decades of cooperation on a variety of issues, including political dialogue, contributions to NATO’s operations and missions, and joint training. Sweden applied for NATO membership following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. As a NATO Invitee, Sweden is cooperating with NATO more closely than ever and its security has been strengthened. Sweden is participating in NATO military and civilian activities and in the NATO defence planning process. It is sitting at the NATO table and is integrated into NATO structures. NATO has also increased its presence and exercises in the region. Recently, soldiers from various NATO Allies including Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States trained side by side with Swedish forces. They took part in Sweden’s largest defence exercise in over 30 years, Aurora 23, as part of further increased cooperation on the Alliance’s collective deterrence and defence. The exercise’s main goal was to demonstrate Sweden’s ability to defend itself in case it was ever to come under attack. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #Sweden
