On the 16th of September 2019, the Lithuanian Customs Practitioners Association started its activities that were defined in the initial meeting by seven companies, which represent various business sectors: customs and excise warehouses, rail and road transport, technical maintenance services, lawyers, customs brokers. The activities: Legislation There are situations, when changes to customs legislation are unexpected for businesses, both in terms of the content changes and in terms of new releases or elimination. The Customs Practitioners Association aims to minimize such situations, maximize business awareness of customs law and make the application of legislation as clear as possible. The Association participates in the work of the Customs Consultative Committee. The Committee examines customs legislation, its practical application, projects of legal acts and questions relevant to businesses. Conferences Legislation is constantly changing at both European Union and national level, and the courts are providing new interpretations of the appliacation in practice. The Customs Practitioners Association holds conferences twice a year (early December and June) to inform participants about current developments, to discuss business issues and to provide the opportunity to make new and maintain current contacts among customs practitioners. Customs broker course The profession of customs broker is not only interesting but also in demand, due to the growing volume of customs procedures (due to Brexit, changes in VAT and other reasons). The Lithuanian Customs Practitioners Association, in cooperation with Vytautas Magnus University and the University of Applied Social Sciences, invites to acquire the qualification of a customs representative by studying at a distance (in Lithuanian). More information

Green transition in Lithuania Best practices, Examples and Lessons Learned
15 Dec 2023
SME Europe
Learning from best practices – how is Lithuania becoming regional hub for green finance in the Baltic states and transitioning into green energy. This event will shed some light on Lithuania’s plan to mobilise public and private funds for its green transition. In recent years, Lithuania’s economy has been making efforts towards a green transition, setting ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the share of renewable energy in its energy mix. One of the key areas where Lithuania is focusing its green transition efforts is in the energy sector by investing in wind and solar power, as well as promoting the use of biofuels. Lithuania’s Green Finance Action Plan for 2023-2026 has reached the finish line and the purpose of the plan is to promote the development of green public and private finance in Lithuania, creating a favourable environment for both business and financial market participants investing in it. However, there are still challenges to be addressed, such as the need to improve energy efficiency of major consumers of energy in the industrial sector. During this webinar, we’ll be discovering the key areas of focus for Lithuania’s green transition efforts, what are the challenges that needs to be addressed to improve energy efficiency and what are the best practices in projects that are leading the way in sustainable energy.

Energy Cities
What is it like to be the young director of a capital city’s energy agency? I found some answers when talking with Janiks Ikaunieks. Janis leads the Riga Energy Agency in Latvia since 2 years. He told us how his agency is tackling the city’s challenges, which spots help him relax and why innovation is not always the first thing to do. Riga is known for its wooden buildings, art nouveau architecture and medieval Old Town. But the city leaders look towards the future: Riga is one of 10 pilot cities who are developing and implementing pathways and scenarios towards climate neutrality within the EUCityCalc project. The EUCityCalc project supports cities in data-driven decision-making: With funding from the EU Horizon 2020 program, the project will release the European City Calculator webtool. This is an open-source instrument with which cities can plan their measures to bring CO2 emissions down to zero.

The legend of Lithuania's Iron Wolf 🇱🇹
9 Jun 2023
NATO
The Lithuanian “Iron Wolf” Mechanised Infantry Brigade takes its name from the mythical creature of Gediminas’ dream. Legend has it, Gediminas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, was on a hunting trip and had an unusual dream of an iron wolf standing and howling on top of a mountain. The Grand Duke’s wise men interpreted this as a meaning that a great city should be built there. The Grand Duke was then inspired to found the city on the Vilnia River in 1323, which eventually became modern-day Vilnius. Today, the Iron Wolf brigade makes up the core unit of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and plays an important part in Lithuania‘s contribution to NATO’s collective defence. For the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the iron wolf is a sign of strength and vigilance, where everyone should know the Lithuanians are ready to stand guard to defend Lithuania and NATO Allies against any aggression. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #Lithuania

PANTERA/SUPEERA joint workshop - International research collaboration opportunities: fostering EU Clean Energy transition in Lithuania On April 27th, the final workshop of the 10-series was held in Vilnius, jointly organised by SUPEERA and PANTERA projects. The event brought together experts from academia, industry, and government sectors in a hybrid format. The participants shared valuable insights and experiences, contributing to a fruitful exchange of knowledge. The main topics discussed were the challenges and opportunities in bringing the research communities of the EU-13 countries closer together and fostering collaboration among them. Specific challenges faced by Lithuanian actors were highlighted, such as the lack of coordination between national and European priorities. The benefits of enhanced collaboration between industry and research sectors were underscored, and the active participation of Lithuanian actors in the SET Plan and the European Energy Research Alliance was encouraged. The panel discussion delved into the revision of Lithuania's National Energy and Climate Plan and the role of community involvement in refining NECP objectives. The importance of informal networking, connecting with neighbouring countries and concentrating efforts in areas where countries have a competitive advantage were also highlighted. In the second part, the discussion presented various R&I opportunities for collaboration and funding, highlighting the significance of EU programs like the European Innovation Council (EIC), the EEA and Norway Grants, and Horizon Europe. The presentations also discussed the challenges and opportunities for widening countries' participation in the Horizon Europe program, and the benefits of being part of European Partnerships. The PANTERA project was also presented, which aims to create a European forum for stakeholders in smart grids, storage, and local energy systems, and the EIRIE platform was discussed as a multi-functional collaborative platform for knowledge and data related to R&I activities in Europe. Overall, the presentations and discussions showcased the interconnectedness of the topics being addressed and the funding opportunities available to Lithuania to enhance its scientific and technological landscape and drive innovation in Europe.

The EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes in action in Lithuania: interviews with key actors, filmed in railway stations and terminals in Vilnius, Kaunas and Šeštokai, and the port of Klaipėda (Lithuania). Background: Since Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine and the blockade of Ukraine’s usual transport routes, Ukraine has been unable to export its produce to destinations around the world and import what it needs. With thousands of tonnes of grain stuck in Ukraine, the situation threatened global food security; alternative routes were needed urgently. Against this background, the EU established 'Solidarity Lanes' to ensure Ukraine can export grain and other products and import the goods it needs, from humanitarian aid to animal feed and fertilisers, via alternative transport routes: inland waterways, rail and road. The Solidarity Lanes are an unprecedented cooperation of authorities and businesses in EU Member States, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. Today, they have become the lifeline of Ukraine's economy. One of Lithuania’s largest military exercises, Iron Wolf, saw nine NATO Allies – Belgium, Czechia, Germany, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States – gather for intense training at Pabrade Training Ground, Lithuania. The exercise, which involved more than 3,500 troops, and armoured vehicles including German Leopard 2 tanks, tested the ability of the Lithuanian Army’s Iron Wolf Brigade to carry out defensive operations and counter-attacks. NATO’s German-led multinational battlegroup participated, as did a US Army battalion assigned to Lithuania on a rotational basis. The exercise was also an opportunity for troops from various Allies to hone their skills and ability to work together, as well as testing their readiness to defend NATO’s eastern flank, if required. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribeConnect with NATO online:Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepageReceive NATO updates via email: http://bit.ly/NATOemailsFind NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebookFollow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitterFollow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagramFind NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedinFind NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr#NATO #WeAreNATO #Lithuania

During the exercise, Lithuanian soldiers worked shoulder-to-shoulder with their NATO Allies. A quick stop for a snack between operations, and then back to work! They pressed forward while Leopard 2 tanks from Germany provided cover. It isn’t easy, but hey – you don’t become an Iron Wolf by staying home. Exercise Iron Wolf involved more than 3,500 troops from nine NATO Allies. This Oxford-style debate is part of ECFR’s Re:shape Global Europe project supported by Stiftung Mercator Guests Reinhard Bütikofer, MEP, German Green Party Šarūnas Liekis, Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy, Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas, Lithuania Chaired by Janka Oertel, Director, Asia Programme, ECFR China is ratcheting up economic pressure against Lithuania in reaction to leaving the 17+1 format and the opening of the Taiwan Representative Office in Vilnius last year. Some say that this is a wake-up call and a moment when all EU countries should show solidarity with Lithuania – to demonstrate that the bloc will never accept the use of economic coercion against one of its members. Others argue that solidarity should go along with responsibility – and that the promise of solidarity should not encourage member states to be more reckless and offensive than they would normally be. Who is right? What are the consequences that have to be drawn? This event is part of ECFR’s Re:shape Global Europe project supported by Stiftung Mercator.

EU launches WTO case against China over Lithuanian export ban
EU launches WTO case against China over Lithuanian export ban
27 Jan 2022
EU Reporter
The EU has taken action today (27 January), against the People’s Republic of China, launching a case at the World Trade Organization relating to its discriminatory trade practices against Lithuania, which is also hitting other companies in the EU’s Single Market. In retaliation for Lithuania permitting Taiwan to open an investment office in Vilnius, which China considers to be a de facto embassy, China has slashed imports from Lithuania by 91% according to its own figure and has also sharply reduced imports. China believes that Lithuania’s actions breach the ‘One China’ policy, which most EU countries respect, where only the People’s Republic of China is recognised as a sovereign state. European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis emphasised that he would like to find a diplomatic solution and reaffirmed the EU’s engagement with China over issues like climate change. Dombrovskis made it clear that the EU considers this issue as a European one, especially since China is also encouraging multinational companies to abandon the use of Lithuanian components in their production, otherwise they too may face import restrictions: “Let me be clear: These measures are a threat to the integrity of the EU Single Market. They affect intra-EU trade and EU supply chains. And they have a negative impact on EU industry.” China recently celebrated its 20th anniversary of joining the WTO. Dombrovskis says that membership means being bound by multilateral rules and respecting those rules. The Executive Vice President also used today’s announcement to urge EU member states and the European Parliament to fast track the work on the anti-coercion instrument, which he presented at the end of 2021. He said: “It will give the EU the possibility to react swiftly and effectively when faced with economic coercion. The EU should invest every effort to have this instrument in place as soon as possible – and the Commission will support efforts by the French Presidency to make quick progress.”

In October 2019, a unit of US Army cavalry soldiers deployed to Lithuania at that country’s request as part of US Army Europe’s Operation Atlantic Resolve. The 1st Cavalry Division’s 1st Battalion 9th Cavalry Regiment sent hundreds of soldiers, tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to Pabradė Training Grounds, where they trained alongside Lithuanian forces until May 2020. A new rotation of soldiers from the same division (the 2nd Battalion 8th Cavalry Regiment) are carrying on the deployment in 2021. In this piece, two 1-9 Cav soldiers tell you why they bear the hardships of deployment far from home and how it makes them better soldiers alongside their NATO Allies. Footage includes shots of 1-9 Cav soldiers working out, maintaining vehicles and conducting a live-fire exercise, and interviews with First Lieutenant Matthew Lund and Corporal Caitlin Ward. Video also includes shots of 2-8 Cav soldiers conducting a live-fire exercise alongside their Lithuanian allies. Please note that footage of the 1-9 Cav was filmed prior to the coronavirus pandemic. During the 2021 deployment of the 2-8 Cav, all troops have been operating within a self-contained bubble of personnel. All soldiers tested negative for COVID-19 prior to any interactions. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribeConnect with NATO online:Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepageReceive NATO updates via email: http://bit.ly/NATOemailsFind NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebookFollow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitterFollow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagramFind NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedinFind NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr#NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

Event organised in cooperation with the Embassy of Lithuania in France, the Embassy of Poland in France and the Embassy of Romania in France. Belarus has entered its sixth month marked by unprecedented protests triggered by rigged election results. The protesters are demanding an end to the Belarus dictatorship but the long-time leader Alexander Lukashenka has shown no signs of readiness to give in. Instead, he grips to power and responds with violence, police brutality and detention. Europe has reacted with sanctions but protesters and members of the opposition largely perceive its response to be insufficient. What are the chances for a regime change in Belarus in 2021? How is Europe planning to keep Belarus on the agenda and will it provide more political support for Belarusian civil society? What are Russia’s plans for Belarus in 2021? A Dutch mobile artillery unit assigned to NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup in Lithuania recently conducted a live-fire exercise at Pabradė Training Grounds alongside their Lithuanian counterparts. ? With their ability to “shoot and scoot” – conduct fire missions and then quickly move to cover – mobile artillery plays a crucial role in many Allied militaries. For this exercise, the Dutch and Lithuanians used Panzer Howitzer 2000-NL self-propelled guns to practise this critical capability. Forward observers from Germany and Norway helped coordinate the strikes. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribeConnect with NATO online:Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepageReceive NATO updates via email: http://bit.ly/NATOemailsFind NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebookFollow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitterFollow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagramFind NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedinFind NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr#NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

It features two project examples that demonstrate how LEADER funds can be used to create useful rural jobs as well as improve important local services. The projects are a new care home for elderly rural residents and a new veterinary business set-up by a young entrepreneur. This film also highlights the key roles that women provide in helping to develop rural Europe.

This EAFRD case study shows how LEADER support can be used to support elderly care, jobs and innovation for rural Lithuania's social economy. The project is located in a rural community in Kaunas district, where an old unused school building was converted into a modern care home for around 30 elderly residents. It provides an important social care function for a rural community that suffers from depopulation and lacks adequate numbers of young people to care at home for their parents or grand parents. LEADER co-funded the new development's external renovation work including solar panels and energy efficiency insulation. LEADER also helped to fund specialised equipment at the centre. This project is a good practice example of using the EU rural development funds alongside EU cohesion funds. The latter used ERDF support for much of the interior works during conversion of the old school building.

High-altitude, low-opening (HALO) freefall jumps are a useful but risky method of infiltrating Special Operations Forces into dangerous territory. Our planet faces its greatest challenge for millennia: us.There is now almost unanimous agreement that humans are having enormous impacts on the natural balance of our planet, with consequences that threaten our own existence and the survival of natural ecosystems alike. The need for drastic change in our behaviour is clear. And yet, the response from political leaders and people in general is weak. Why? Human actions are driven by many factors, but having a clear understanding of cause and effect is a dominant one. Arguably, this is where communication of scientific evidence has failed to inform opinion sufficiently to drive the actions that are necessary to mitigate the worst impacts on our planet’s future climate. This session highlights the challenges that exist in communicating climate science and demonstrate ways in which scientific research and evidence can be communicated in a way that is meaningful and persuasive to the public and policymakers alike. This session demonstrates the most effective ways to communicate issues relating to climate change which may seem abstract, distant or complex, in a way that makes them relatable. María knew how her life was going to be when she married Juan, a Lieutenant in the Spanish Navy. When he embarked on board the Spanish Frigate “Alvaro de Bazán”, deployed with NATO Standing Naval Forces, it was about a fortnight before she was due to give birth. Fortunately, he was able to disembark and be present for the birth of Victoria, their third child. Even though she had to put her career on hold in order to take care of their children and adapt to this way of life, María feels rewarded because she believes that it allows her to see many places and gives her a chance to miss her husband when he is away. She also feels lucky to count on the support of the other spouses. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribeConnect with NATO online:Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepageReceive NATO updates via email: http://bit.ly/NATOemailsFind NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebookFollow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitterFollow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagramFind NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedinFind NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr#NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

What can the Commission do to increase retail participation in capital markets? And what should the IM industry do? In order to contribute to the Lithuanian and the EU Digital Agenda 2020 targets, “Plačiajuostis internetas” is implementing the project «Support for broadband infrastructure (stage II)» (PRIP2). The project focuses on rural and agricultural areas in Lithuania where previously there was no commercial interest, and creates the conditions to secure 30 Mbps and higher bandwidth availability. The goal of PRIP2 was to construct approximately 340 km of optical fibre lines and to connect more than 400 agricultural sector objects (farmsteads, agricultural industries, food processing companies, etc) to existing infrastructure. The goals of the project were met and as a result, a population 79 000 is served with high-speed broadband.

During the implementation of the project, the optical fibre infrastructure was deployed and a network was provided to all operators with equal conditions. The end-users could freely choose their retail service operator and stakeholders were encouraged to invest in rural areas, which were in the past commercially unattractive. This project was by 85% funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and was a finalist in the European Broadband Awards 2018.
