By 2030, Greece’s National Energy and Climate Plan defines energy efficiency targets and measures to be implemented across all sectors. Under EU regulation, Greece has set targets for annual energy savings for the 2017-2020 and 2021-2030 periods. In the building sector, the government is strengthening building codes and has launched a number of investment programmes that aim to improve, among others, the energy performance of public and private buildings. In the transport sector, Greece is supporting the uptake of electromobility and is investing in improving charging infrastructure. Measures for industry energy efficiency include energy audits and support for efficient equipment, mainly for heating. The main question is: How far is Greece for achieving these targets? The Mediterranean region is a climate change hotspot, as it is warming faster compared to the global average. Over 150,000 people lost their lives due to floods, storms, and heatwaves. Countries such as Greece are experiencing tropical weather. In the past years, the country had to face numerous wildfires, but also floods, which resulted in huge land loss, economical damage, and lost lives. The Greek government is introducing new climate laws, which aim at mitigation and adaptation, including reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, transitioning to renewable energy sources by 2030 and reducing greenhouse gasses. However, information about the population at risk is unavailable throughout Europe. For this reason, IMPETUS is developing a ‘Hot-spot Identification and Prioritisation Service’, a tool that will allow researchers to locate areas that are at a higher risk, and it will combine climate data with satellite information on population. We have worked in Greece since 1963, upgrading infrastructure and helping small businesses to tackle the financial crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic. We helped build better roads and made transport more sustainable. We worked to expand the Athens metro, which helps 130,000 people a day get around the city. We also gave Greece “framework” loans worth several billion euros to help schools, museums, tourism and the environment. Europe Beyond Coal
A massive roll out of solar power and energy storage solutions in Greece has quickly turned a bleak future into a bright one for the soon-to-be-former coal region of Western Macedonia. Lignite production in Greece has fallen by more than 80 percent in the last decade. As a result, Greece has reduced lignite-based electricity production and associated emissions by more than any other country in the EU. Coal regions & power companies - once a source of the fossil fuel problems we now face - can play a pioneering role in the transition to clean energy solutions across Europe. With people suffering from high energy prices, volatile fossil fuel costs from the invasion of Ukraine, and climate change biting, we must speed up this work across Europe, and more beyond coal (and all fossil fuels!) in a fast and fair way.

In her contribution, Dorothée Schmid focuses on the relationship with Greece and France, which has taken a new strategic shift in September 2021 following the signature of a defense agreement between the two countries. Both Paris and Athens can benefit from it and use it to position themselves as major regional actors, even though the agreement has stirred up controversy within the EU, as it implicitly targets Turkey. Video replay of Ifri's Turkey/Middle East Program held on January 13, 2022. It aims at questioning the Greek, Turkish, Cypriot, and French perspectives of the recent France-Greece rapprochement. Since 2014, the number of maritime incidents between Turkey and its Greek and Cypriot neighbors has steadily increased. In 2020, at the height of the crisis, Greece obtained the unconditional support of French President Emmanuel Macron, who sought to portray himself as the defender of European sovereignty by adopting a confrontational stance towards Turkey. France-Greece relations have only grown stronger since then, with a defense partnership between the two countries being signed in September 2021. Beyond the secular friendship that unites France and Greece, what is the strategic ambition of this new partnership? Can it be considered a Hellenic alliance from which Cyprus stands to benefit? How does Turkey perceive these developments on the borders of its “Blue Homeland? Speakers: • Thanos Dokos, National Security Advisor of Greece. • Sinan Ülgen, Director, Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies (EDAM), (Istanbul), Visiting Scholar, Carnegie Europe. • Zenonas Tziarras, Researcher at Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Cyprus Center. • Dorothée Schmid, Senior Research Fellow, Head of Turkey and Middle East Program, Ifri. ECF collaboration lab episode: Community power through virtual net metering in Athens area
22 Dec 2021
Energy Cities
Greece is a gifted country when it comes to renewables and it was the first EU country to have a law on energy communities all the way back in 2018. In its national energy and climate plan, the Greek government has set a target of in self-consumption by 2030. We wanted to know how this translates into concrete action on the ground and did a virtual travel to Ilioupoli. Ilioupoli is a sub-urban municipality in the Athens area. It counts 80.000 residents. For this episode we met two of them: Thanos Katsonis works for the local government of Ilioupoli, and Chris Vrettos is driving force of the social cooperative Electra Energy. They are just about to kick-start a community power organisation. How will they work collaboratively to increase the number of prosumers in Greece and – who knows – to bring other good things to the local community? Thanos and Chris tell us how they push for a citizen energy culture and the steps necessary to achieve this. This episode and the collaboration lab were made possible thanks to funding from the European Climate Foundation (ECF). The ECF is an international non-profit and its great team promotes climate and energy policies in Europe. In 2019, the European Climate Foundation launched its Energy Democracy program. It focuses on the support of community energy projects both at the EU and national levels. europeanclimate.org

The Greek Solar PV market has been experiencing noteworthy developments in the past year. To put this growth into figures, in 2020, Greece completed over 900 MW of new solar generation capacity. In the past months, a wide range of new investment plans were announced in Greece, from mega solar PV projects to battery and electric vehicle production. This shows that Greece is set to become one of the most promising solar markets in Europe. In this Up Close interview, Melih Can Güngör, Sales Manager of the South Eastern European Market at Trina Solar, gives us key insights into the recent growth and potential of the Greek solar market for the upcoming years. Melih will share his knowledge of the current state of the Greek solar PV market. Since 2018, after the financial crisis, Greece has been showing significant growth again, stimulated by new auction schemes, governmental support, and ambitious targets to simulate renewable energy production. Melih will also dive into the technological trends helping to boost the Greek energy transition and larger scale solar projects. Among them is the recent industry move to apply more efficient modules of 210 mm cells and the holistic approach combining modules, trackers and storage as a complete solution to the power plant. ______ ? Eva Kaili, Member of the European Parliament, S&D, Greece and the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) organise an event to discuss the cybersecurity challenges related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). The goal of this workshop is to discuss and debate on the cybersecurity challenges related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Whereas undoubtedly beneficial (AI brings numerous benefits to everyday life), one should not sidestep the fact that AI and its application on automated decision making – especially in safety critical deployments such as in autonomous vehicles - might open new avenues in manipulation and attack methods, while creating new privacy challenges. Cybersecurity is therefore of paramount importance for the reliable and trustworthy deployment of AI. Tuesday, 29. September, 15.30 – 16.45 CEST With George A. Papandreou, Member of Parliament, Movement for Change; former Prime Minister of Greece Dorothée Schmid, Senior Research Fellow; Head of Turkey and Middle East Program, IFRI Asli Aydintasbas, Senior Policy Fellow, ECFR Chaired by Jana Puglierin, Head of Berlin office & Senior Policy Fellow, ECFR Virtual discussion with George A. Papandreou, Dorothée Schmid and Asli Aydintasbas on Europe´s mediatory power and potential for Turkish-Greek reconciliation. A conflict is brewing in the Eastern Mediterranean, with Turkey, Greece and Cyprus at loggerheads about maritime borders, exclusive economic zones, and gas exploration. There is a risk for a wider conflict that draws in Middle East powers as well as other member states. Europe has a vested interest in stability on its southern flank and in making sure NATO partners do not clash over energy resources. But so far, EU-led mediation efforts have not led to a resolution of the conflict. What is the best strategy for de-escalation? Will Europe be able to overcome its internal divisions on East Med? Will the special European Council meeting on Oct 1-2 push things forward? Can there be a new bargain with Turkey that is acceptable to member states and addresses both Greek and Turkish concerns? What to expect from the forthcoming 61st round of exploratory talks between Turkey and Greece? Read more analysis on the eastern Mediterranean here: https://www.ecfr.eu/topic/eastern-mediterranean

16 Sep 2020
Solarplaza
Through this complimentary webinar, we offer participants a quick, comprehensive and interactive way to get an overview of the state of the Greek PV market and the opportunities for energy trading. Greece has around 2.7 GW of solar capacity installed, and has recently experienced a jump in new PV installations. The country more than tripled the amount of new installations, while slashing tender prices significantly over a period of 12 months. As a result, solar is now able to cover 7% of the country’s total electricity demand. However, the market is in need of some important changes in order for it to take off. Greek authorities face challenges with regards to providing the necessary licenses and connecting assets to the country’s national grid in time. Furthermore, the building blocks are put in place for new business models involving energy trading and PPAs. Topics addressed: -State and outlook of the Greek PV market -Impact and overview of the tender program -Future business models: energy trading and PPAs -Current trends and future opportunities Speakers: Stelios Psomas Christos Georgopoulos This webinar is part of Solarplaza's lead up to the Solar Future Greece conference (19 November /// Athens, Greece). Unaccompanied migrant children: a travesty of EU values
7 Jul 2020
Friends of Europe
In the spring of 2020, Greece found itself hosting over 5,000 unaccompanied migrant children – more than half of whom were living in precarious environments, including the infamous island ‘hotspots’. Despite a handful of EU countries pledging to relocate a number of those children, progress remains slow. With some of Europe’s most vulnerable people living in such unsafe conditions, states must urgently address the fact that these unaccompanied minors are – first and foremost – children who are entitled to special protection under international law. This Strategic Conversation with Afshan Khan, UNICEF’s Special Coordinator for the Refugee and Migrant Response in Europe, will be an opportunity to identify protection gaps and suggest new approaches to supporting and upholding the rights of unaccompanied minors. This new Strategic Conversations series invites key policymakers to share their views on a range of important and strategically relevant issues through interviews with senior thinkers on the Friends of Europe team. __________________ Subscribe! ► http://bit.ly/2n5HBDp Connect. The package of technical support leverages resources from URBIS and the Natural Capital Finance Facility (NCFF) to enhance the city’s resilience to climate change impacts and other shocks. The EIB team produced the Climate Change Adaptation Design Principles for Public Buildings and for Public Spaces, which take into consideration vulnerability and climate change risks. These Design Principles will then be used to guide the preparation of the final designs: to refurbish selected schools and other public buildings with the objective to improve their energy efficiency and increase their resilience to climate change and earthquakes (URBIS technical assistance) and to renew and green selected public spaces, to address urban heat island effects, to reduce flush flooding and other climate related impacts as well as to create positive impacts on the city’s biodiversity (NCFF technical assistance). fossil Prospects for coal and clean coal technologies in Greece | IEACCC Webinars
Prospects for coal and clean coal technologies in Greece | IEACCC Webinars
30 Apr 2020
IEA Clean Coal Centre
Greece’s financial crisis continues to have a major impact on all facets of the country’s economy. In 2015, the financial crisis continued unabated. When significant economic recovery does occur, the energy sector will have a major role to play. The country has a high energy import dependency, which is expensive ? reportedly, about ~US$ 20 billion/year. The overall diversification of the energy mix is rather limited. Greece’s main indigenous energy resource is poor quality lignite, used to generate a significant proportion of the country’s electricity. The state-owned energy company Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC) is the largest lignite producer. More than 93% of Greece’s energy is provided by fossil fuels, (EU average is 75%). In 2014, a new government was elected and energy policy changed direction as earlier plans to privatise parts of the energy sector were curtailed. However, conditions demanded recently by EU and IMF creditors, mean that privatisation schemes may be back on the table. This is likely to encompass natural gas and electricity supply. There has been a renewed focus on the potential of the country’s lignite resources. In order to minimise the cost of imported energy and improve security of energy supply, the present government intends to increase their use, primarily for electricity generation. The webinar examines the situation prevailing in the Greek energy sector, and how this might change in the future. Existing and proposed clean coal-based activities are discussed. However, major uncertainties (in terms of scope and timescale) remain over many aspects of energy production ? the nature of, and rate of economic recovery will undoubtedly have major impacts. -----------------------------------------------------------------Presenter: Dr Steve Millshttps://www.iea-coal.org/about/teams/stephen-mills/ Download this presentation:https://www.iea-coal.org/webinar/prospects-for-coal-and-clean-coal-technologies-in-greece/-----------------------------------------------------------------Twitter:https://twitter.com/IEACCCLinkedin:https://www.linkedin.com/company/2453501

In the Péloponnèse region of southern Greece, some of the olive trees are a hundred years old and have been farmed via tried and tested methods over the decades; but these time-honoured approaches are now being augmented by Precision Farming. This is a modern farming management idea, using the latest technology with the aim of increasing the quantity and quality of agricultural products. The system, also referred to as Smart Farming, uses methods such as GPS, soil scanning and data management to more precisely take the required action at the right moment and give the necessary care needed to ensure healthy and substainable farming. In the Péloponnèse region, the new techniques are being used to create the right balance between traditional methods and the enhancement of advanced technologies. Scientists operating in the area are part of a European research project. Drones with multi-spectral cameras allow the olive oil producers to more precisely monitor the growth stages of each of their trees.
