Developed in the framework of the Dialogue on Mediterranean Transit Migration (MTM), MC2CM is anchored in a network of 20 Euro-Mediterranean cities. It is funded by the EU and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and is implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). MC2CM contributes to improved migration governance at local level in cities in Europe and in the Southern Mediterranean, with a specific focus on integration and inclusion, and migrants’ access to rights and services, enhancing their positive contribution to both host and home societies.  Activities are clustered under three axes: Dialogue, facilitating cooperation between migration governance stakeholders at different levels; Knowledge, contributing to improved information and knowledge on urban migration; and Action, supporting the implementation of policy recommendations and development of pilot initiatives. At the same time, MC2CM promotes a balanced discourse on migration in a cross-cutting manner, notably encouraging intercultural dialogue.

The National Statistics Office came into being in March 1947. Official statistics, however, had been compiled and published for many years.  In 1872, an official publication called The Malta Blue Book featured a statistical view of Malta and its Dependencies from 1863 to 1872, covering the relevant time series for population, education, finance, and trade among others. One of the first volumes of The Blue Book of the Colony of Malta was published in 1851 and included a statistical abstract on population emanating from the 1842 Census.  The National Statistics Office (NSO) is the executive arm of the Malta Statistics Authority. It is responsible for the collection, compilation, analysis and publication of a wide range of statistical information and related matters. This does not prevent other government departments or institutions from collecting their own statistical data for internal purposes. Information provided to the NSO is treated as  confidential. This information is used solely in the compilation of statistical reports. The Commission welcomes today’s inauguration of the Multi-Material Recovery Facility in Ħal Far, Malta. The Facility will develop alternative ways of collecting waste with the aim of preparation and storage for recycling and export. This will improve Malta’s waste management capacity by deviating recoverable materials away from landfills and directing them into the circular economy. The project benefitted from €11.4 million from the Cohesion Fund and will focus on waste such as wood, mattresses, textiles, flat glass, waste electrical and electronic equipment, expanded polystyrene, gypsum and tyres. The Facility is expected to recover almost 20,000 tonnes of waste by 2029. Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said: “The reliance on landfilling pressures on Malta’s environment, infrastructure, and socio-economic structures. This project is expected to lower landfilling allowing for more efficient land use and this is key to ensure the highest possible re-use and recovery of waste in line with national and European directives. The Facility will be of concrete help in Malta’s path towards reducing the volume of waste going to landfill at the direct benefit of citizens and the environment.” The inauguration will take place at the Facility site in Ħal Far during a press conference with Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius; Miriam Dalli, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise; and Chris Bonett, Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds. During his official visit to Malta, Commissioner Sinkevičius will also have a working lunch with Miriam Dalli, and visit the Ecohive Complex and Wied Fulija - a former landfill now transformed into open green space. The Commissioner has also met with Prime Minister Robert Abela and had bilateral exchanges with Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, Anton Refalo. In 2014-2020, Malta benefited from Cohesion Policy funding worth more than €1 billion, including to finance other environment relevant projects such as measures to increase awareness to improve recycling levels and the rehabilitation of Wied Fulija. In this video, we address the problem of water scarcity and nitrate pollution in #Malta, a small island nation that relies heavily on desalination plants for #freshwater production. We explain the potential negative impact of #fertilizers such as #manure or #digestate on water quality and show how our NOMAD technology can reduce nitrate pollution and dependence on fertilizer imports, and optimize water use in Maltese agriculture. The project's demonstration site, the Ta'Barkat wastewater treatment plant, treats #wastewater and separates it into solid and liquid components. The NOMAD truck treats the solid residue for use as organic fertilizer, while the liquid fraction is processed to be used as pollution-free irrigation water in industry and #agriculture. This fertilizer recovery can also be done from the solid fraction of small-scale AD plants. We aim to show that the use of #anaerobicdigestion systems in conjunction with NOMAD technology has many benefits for energy and fertilizer production for farmers as well, promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Malta.

Media Freedom in Malta: Murder, Disinformation and Legal Intimidation
17 Feb 2023
ForeignPolicyCentre
Over the four years since the murder of Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in October 2017, her family and friends have carried out a courageous campaign for justice. Their tenacity has resulted in bringing those accused in her murder to trial and created a wider anti-corruption movement in Maltese politics and society. Despite Caruana Galizia’s murder shining an international spotlight on the island, independent journalists have continued to face significant harassment, including disinformation campaigns and legal intimidation. Almost all (*if not all) major independent Maltese media have faced an attempted SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) as a result of their reporting on matters in the public interest. Many of these have been facilitated by UK based law firms, an experience also shared by Caruana Galizia prior to her assassination. This event, co-organised by the Justice for Journalists Foundation (JFJ) and the Foreign Policy Centre (FPC), will explore the state of media freedom in Malta today. The speakers will discuss what the campaign for justice for Daphne has achieved and how independent journalism can be better protected in the future. SPEAKERS: Caroline Muscat, Editor in Chief, The Shift Paul Caruana Galizia, Journalist and son of Daphne Caruana Galizia Rebecca Vincent, Director of International Campaigns, RSF and a member of FPC’s Advisory Council Caoilfhionn Gallagher QC, Barrister at Doughty Street Chambers Chair: Lana Estemirova, Host of The Trouble with the Truth Podcast and FPC Fellow (This is an Archive event from November 2, 2021)

"Malta-Russia Relations & the Libyan Civil War", Mark Harwood | TEPSA Explainers
22 Jul 2022
TEPSA - Trans Europe...
In 2021 with the creation of the National Government of Unity and the fact that both Malta and Russia now are backing the same government, the relationship thawed, and in fact Malta allowed the seized Dinar to be sent, to be unconfiscated. However there does not seem to be much incentive to prioritise Malta-Russia relations going forward, irrespective of the situation in the Ukraine. Ultimately, Malta is prioritising the fact that it has been grey-listed by the FATF, and for this reason Malta does not want to be seen as a country that harbours irregular financial practices. But also it’s “golden passport” scheme has led to an infringement case with the European Commission, and in particular due to the fact that a sizeable number of Russians have applied for this scheme. In fact, after the invasion of Ukraine, Malta suspended the scheme for Russians and Belarusians. So in this way, relations with Russia are not likely to improve, irrespective of the situation in Ukraine, but due to other, wider issues, even though the situation vis-à-vis Libya sees both countries on the same page. In this video Mark Harwood, the Director of the Institute for European Studies at the University of Malta, analyses Malta-Russia relations in the context of both countries' historic ties to Libya. He explains the history of Malta's external relations policy from gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1964 right up to the Libyan Civil War, and analyses how the outcomes of the Civil War have affected Malta-Russia relations. At the end of the video, he explains what all this means in the context of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine. TEPSA Explainers are short videos elaborating on key issues in European affairs according to the expertise of the contributor. #TEPSAExplainers #Russia #Malta TEPSA Website: https://www.tepsa.eu/ TEPSA Twitter: https://twitter.com/tepsaeu TEPSA Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tepsa.eu TEPSA LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/tepsabrussels TEPSA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tepsaeu/ Music: The Stratosphere, song by Adam Vitovský

In this latest TEPSA Explainer, Mark Harwood, Director of the Institute for European Studies at the University of Malta, gives his analysis of Euroscepticism in Malta. He argues that, as with other countries, Euroscepticism in the Maltese context is very much a reflection of domestic politics, and that as a result of this, the way of dealing with it is also very much embedded in a domestic context This TEPSA Explainer is linked with the second edition of the TEPSA “Views from the Capitals” book series, edited by Michael Kaeding, Johannes Pollak, and Paul Schmidt. space Pine Island Glacier spawns piglets
Pine Island Glacier spawns piglets
13 Feb 2020
European Space Agenc...
As anticipated, Pine Island Glacier, known as PIG for short, in Antarctica has just spawned a huge iceberg. At over 300 sq km, about the size of Malta, this huge berg very quickly broke into many ‘piglet’ pieces the largest of which is dubbed B-49. Thanks to images the Copernicus Sentinel satellite missions, two large rifts in the glacier were spotted last year and scientists have been keeping a close eye on how quickly these cracks were growing. This animation uses 57 radar images captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission between February 2019 and February 2020 (the last frame is from yesterday, 10 February 2020) and shows just how quickly the emerging cracks grew and led to this calving event. Pine Island Glacier, along with its neighbour Thwaites Glacier, connect the centre of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet with the ocean – together discharging significant quantities of ice into the ocean. These two glaciers have been losing ice over the last 25 years. Owing to their extremely remote location, satellites play a critical role in measuring and monitoring Antarctic glaciology – revealing the timing and pace of glacial retreat in Antarctica. Since the early 1990s, the Pine Island Glacier’s ice velocity has increased dramatically to values which exceed 10 m a day. Its floating ice front, which has an average thickness of approximately 500 metres, has experienced a series of calving events over the past 30 years, some of which have abruptly changed the shape and position of the ice front. These changes have been mapped by ESA-built satellites since the 1990s, with calving events occurring in 1992, 1995, 2001, 2007, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, and now 2020. Mark Drinkwater, senior scientist and cryosphere specialist remarked, “The Copernicus twin Sentinel-1 all-weather satellites have established a porthole through which the public can watch events like this unfold in remote regions around the world. What is unsettling is that the daily data stream reveals the dramatic pace at which climate is redefining the face of Antarctica.” Get the animated gif: http://bit.ly/PineIslandGlacier Credits: contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2019–20), processed by ESA ★ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/ESAsubscribe and click twice on the bell button to receive our notifications.Check out our full video catalog: http://bit.ly/SpaceInVideosFollow us on Twitter: http://bit.ly/ESAonTwitterOn Facebook: http://bit.ly/ESAonFacebookOn Instagram: http://bit.ly/ESAonInstagramOn Flickr: http://bit.ly/ESAonFlickrWe are Europe's gateway to space. Introduced by Inge Ceustermans, Managing Director The Festival Academy The 15th Atelier for Young Festival Managers has been launched in Valletta with an opening provocation by Time Magazine’s Person of the Year 2018, award-winning photographer, teacher, writer and human right activist Shahidul Alam who - in his pursuit of social justice through media, education and culture - set up the award winning organisations, Drik, Pathshala and Chobi Mela. Shahidul Alam shared his experience and impactful story - the story of so many people in the world suffering injustice - and simultaneously demonstrated the power of arts, community involvement and festivals as platforms for change and resistance. Courage is contagious was the concluding message he sent out the opening ceremony guests, and the 32 Atelier participants that have now completed 7 intense days of conversation on the role of festivals in our contemporary world. 23 March 2019

Carmelo Abela - Irregular Migration: Malta’s Frontline Experience
25 Apr 2016
IIEA1
About the Speech: One of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries in the EU has, for the past decade and a half, come face to face with the irregular immigration phenomenon without hardly ever being the intended country of destination. Since 2002, the central Mediterranean archipelago of Malta has experienced a continuous influx of asylum seekers and irregular migrants. Minister Abela illustrated Malta’s experience as one of the EU’s southernmost border posts and also provided insights into Malta’s recently-published National Strategy for the Reception of Asylum Seekers and Irregular Migrants. He also argued that this is the time for the EU to move beyond crisis control and nationalistic entrenchment and instead make progress on all aspects of a comprehensive approach to the issue. About the Speaker: Carmelo Abela is the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security of Malta. He was first elected to Parliament in 1996 and was Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives from June 2003 to May 2010. Between April 2013 and December 2014, he served as Government Party Whip and Government Spokesperson. In September 2013 he was elected as Regional Representative on the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. He was also Malta’s Head Of Delegation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union and a Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE.
