V4's Super Election Year 2023: New Hot Spot Slovakia?
31 May 2023
Freedom Dialogue Europe
The year 2023 is crucial for the further internal and foreign policy development in the #V4 countries. While the presidential elections in the Czech Republic ended with a very positive result, with the election of former NATO high commander and clear pro-European defender Petr Pavel, Western partners are looking at the other V4 countries with concern. After the Hungarian opposition missed its chance last year and was crushingly defeated by Orbán, polarised Poland and destabilised #Slovakia are facing fateful elections later this year. Can the West completely lose the V4 as an ally? Why do #populism and #nationalism repeatedly win over liberal democracy in Central Europe? How can liberals contribute to the victory of pro-democratic forces in Poland and Slovakia, so that Slovakia does not join neighbouring Poland and Hungary on the list of black sheep in the #EU? -- ++The Innovation Plattform for a Liberal Europe++ The European Dialogue of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom has offices in Brussels, Madrid, and Prague. Watch the YouTube playlist for World Mental Health Day: https://bit.ly/3fJIX5M --- For this year’s World Mental Health Day, Mental Health Europe produced Our Stories: Seeking Mental Health in the Context of Migration, two video testimonials to share the stories of people who have been displaced and went through challenging migration journeys. We interviewed Tetiana, a Ukrainian woman with two young children who was forced to flee her country following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Tetiana is now in Slovakia where she supports other displaced Ukrainians with the project “Ukraine for Ukraine” and highlights the importance of sharing her feelings with those who went through the same journey. Our Stories: Seeking Mental Health in the Context of Migration” takes us inside the migration journey, the struggle of fleeing one’s country without knowing where to go, and the impact that this process has on mental health. We spoke to them because these are the voices we need to hear when creating new mental health support programs to address the practical needs of refugees and migrants. security NATO deploys Patriot missile air defence system to Slovakia 🇸🇰
NATO deploys Patriot missile air defence system to Slovakia 🇸🇰
20 May 2022
NATO
Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has changed the face of European security and underlined the need for combat-ready forces to be able to deploy at speed across NATO territory. Different NATO Allies are bringing their respective expertise to reinforce the Alliance’s deterrence and defence posture. A Dutch-German Air and Missile Defence Task Force deployed Patriot surface-to-air missile systems near Sliač Air Base, Slovakia in April to reinforce defence capabilities on NATO’s eastern flank. The Patriot systems will contribute to the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS), a network of interconnected sensors, command and control assets, and weapons. These ground-based defensive systems will strengthen NATO’s ability to protect NATO territory against any air and missile threat and attack. The system enables NATO to provide continuous vigilance across NATO airspace. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ What is a PATRIOT? The PATRIOT weapons system (Phased-Array Tracking Radar to Intercept On Target) combats enemy air threats varying from aircraft and helicopters to mid-range ballistic missiles such as SCUD missiles. A PATRIOT battery primarily consists of an Engagement Control Station (ECS, fire control centre), a radar and six launching stations. The launching stations are loaded with a combination of PATRIOT missiles, depending on the threat. The PAC-3 missile is the most advanced missile and has 'Hit-to-Kill' capability. This missile has an extensive range, permitting intercepts of ballistic missiles more effectively and at greater altitudes. The horizontal range can be significantly increased by positioning the launching stations further away from the radar. The PATRIOT radar is a fixed radar that employs an electronically controlled radar beam for the detection, classification and identification of targets as well as for guidance of the system's own missiles. A PATRIOT battery is capable of tracking a large number of targets simultaneously and carrying out several interceptions at once. “Slovakia stands for obligations to the EU and supports the Ukrainian people and sovereignty of the country in the fight against Russia […] and especially today, there is no time for naïve memories for historical legacy, but rather for strong support we can express to Ukraine, Slovakia stands behind its obligations coming from international law.” On May 11 at 10:00 CET the Trans European Policy Studies Association joined with its Slovak member, the Institute of European Studies and International Relations (IESIR) from Comenius University Bratislava, to host a debate on Slovakia’s position on EU-Russia relations. Although relations between Slovakia and Russia cooled following the 2014 annexation of Crimea, Slovakia had strong economic ties to Russia until sanctions were introduced in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine. “EU-Russia Relations: What is Slovakia’s Position?” analysed relations in the context of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, and of TEPSA’s upcoming book “EU-Russia Relations and the Future of Europe: Views from the Capitals”. The event is moderated by Andrea Figulová and featured contributions from TEPSA Chairperson and Dean of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at Comenius University, Lucia Mokrá, and leading expert in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, regionalism and regional integration, and identity in international relations, Aliaksei Kazharski. The event further featured the remarks of ‘Future of Europe’ book series co-editor Paul Schmidt, Secretary-General of the Austria Society for European Politics (ÖGFE), TEPSA’s Associate Member Institute in Austria. TEPSA - Trans Europe...
Slovakia stands for obligations to the EU and supports the Ukrainian people and sovereignty of the country in the fight against Russia [...] and especially today, there is no time for naïve memories for historical legacy, but rather for strong support we can express to Ukraine, we support by our international obligations. Slovakia stands behind their obligations coming from international law. In this video Lucia Mokrá, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of Comenius University in Bratislava, and Chairperson of TEPSA, gives her analysis of Slovak relations with Russia, Slovakia's views on EU-Russia relations writ-large, and on the unfolding invasion of Ukraine by Russia. In her analysis, she takes account of the shared cultural and religious ties between Slovakia and Russia, as well as the historical context of Slovakia's post-communist transformation and membership of NATO and the EU. Despite such a context of Slovak ties to Russia, Slovakia stands behind their obligations coming from international law. EP4U Debate on EU Equality Policy | Bratislava, Slovakia [Slovenčina]
19 Dec 2021
TEPSA - Trans Europe...
This video is in Slovak Non-discrimination and protection of fundamental rights are among the key expectations from any European democratic state. The EU and its Member States are bound and guided by the Charter of Fundamental Rights that promotes, inter alia, equality before the law, non-discrimination, cultural, religious and linguistic diversity, and equality between women and men. In the current legislative term, the EP has held debates on taking forward the horizontal anti-discrimination directive, and many MEPs highlighted the gaps in protection against discrimination in the EU. But in a world where hate still dominated the political landscape, what can the EU do to improve things? In the framework of the EP4U project, TEPSA teamed up with Michaela Dénešová from the Institute of European Studies and International Relations, Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at Comenius University in Bratislava, to organise a University Debate on the EU’s Equality Policy. The event took place on December 2 at 10:00 CET. Michaela Dénešová is a PhD candidate at the university, and will moderate the discussion between Robert Sermek, the Head of the European Parliament Office in Slovakia, Michal Šimečka MEP from the Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament, and Youth Activist Zuzana Hozlárová. The event took place in Slovakian. It will start with a presentation on EU Equality Policy “in a nutshell” before moving on to a panel discussion. GLOBSEC
Topic DEFINING A SUSTAINABLE PATHWAY FOR SLOVAKIA´S HEATING & COOLING (H&C) SECTOR Description We are pleased to invite you to GLOBSEC’s final sustainability webinar of 2021, merging our yearlong building renovation task force and Slovakia Fit for 55 (FF55) strategic stakeholder dialogue series for a discussion about opportunities and challenges facing RES in heating & cooling (H&C). GLOBSEC’s building renovation taskforce was launched a year ago in partnership with Slovakia’s Ministry of Finance as part of recovery and resilience facility consultations and has remained relevant with the support of VUB and Slovak Ministries of Environment and Transport & Construction. In parallel, Slovakia ‘FF55’ programming has examined the potential for Slovakia’s industrial decarbonization and automotive circularity in the context of the European Green Deal. There is growing awareness of the extraordinarily high levels of energy consumption and emissions that the old and largely untouched stock of CEE buildings are responsible for, which requires harmonized H&C demand and supply solutions. The energy transition for buildings is a complex undertaking, beginning with the very interpretation of renewable energy. Fundamentally, is an H&C RES strategy relying on biomass for decarbonization sustainable? Likewise, is natural gas low carbon when considering potent methane emissions? Given Slovakia’s natural gas infrastructure asset endowment, the fuel is being treated as a default cost-efficient option, but does this incorporate the longer-term risk of stranded assets? What are the expectations for residential heat pumps and waste and geothermal in district heating? How does FF55 shape Slovakia’s pathway to more ambitious 2030 targets? Moderated by Nolan Theisen, Climate and Energy Fellow, GLOBSEC Confirmed speakers: - Andrej Juri, President, URSO, Slovakia (confirmed) - Gabriela Fischerova, Director-General, Ministry of Environment, Slovak Republic (confirmed) - Maros Halama, Vice Dean for Research, Innovation, & International Relations, Kosice Technical University (confirmed) Time Dec 7, 2021 10:00 AM in Belgrade, Bratislava, Ljubljana

#GLOBSECwebinars: Slovakia and Belarus: Closer Than We Seem 28 April 2021 (Thursday) 18:00 CEST Please join the event on Zoom here: https://bit.ly/3exLpIn (passcode 496004) We are privileged to invite you to the first briefing of SlovakAid Fellowship program for Change Leaders initiative. During the event, we will discuss the experience of economic and political transformations in Slovakia that can become a role model for Belarus. The briefing will be moderated by iSANS media expert Serge Kharytonau. DISTINGUISHED KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: - Pavol Demeš, GMF Senior Transatlantic Fellow, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia - Ivan Mikloš, Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the Slovak Republic, President of economic think-tank MESA10 - Aleś Alachnovič, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's Economic Advisor. - Veranika Laputska, co-founder of EAST Center (Warsaw), Research Fellow at GMF Rethink.CEE. WHY WE DO THIS: Following successful market reforms of the 1990s, Slovakia became one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe. We hope that the lessons learnt by Slovakia will help Belarus build a sustainable and fast-growing economy in the upcoming decade. Although no market reforms are yet possible in today’s Belarus, its brave people express an incredible commitment to peaceful transformations and political transit. ABOUT SLOVAKAID FELLOWSHIP: SlovakAid Fellowship program for Change Leaders initiative is a joint effort of Slovak Foreign Policy Association (SFPA), GLOBSEC, Institute for Public Affairs (IVO), SlovakAid, and international expert initiative iSANS. In April-October 2021, ten Belarusian specialists will research the systemic reforms in Slovakia and join academic training at leading Slovak think tanks and institutions. All fellows will be mentored by renowned Slovak economists and managers who have promoted reforms in various industries in this country since the mid-1990s.  We expect that SlovakAid Fellowship will help Belarusian professionals become familiar with the Slovak experience of market economy transformation. It may serve as a safe role model for the Belarusian economy of the future. Although Belarus and Slovakia do not share common borders, there is a large set of mental and contextual similarities between the two countries. So, we hope this program will expand the channels of communication between Belarusian and Slovak analytical communities. #GLOBSECgoesDIGITAL

The upcoming elections in the region might lead to further political instability, while the assault on the rule of law remains a norm. #GLOBSEC2020 Bratislava Forum Side Events: Cooperative Security Initiative Cooperative security is not working. Divisions and distrust between Russia and the West create the risk of military incidents, accidents and escalation, and an arms race. At the same time, the safety nets of arms control agreements and confidence-building measures are being cut away. There are fundamentally different narratives on both sides about how we got into such a situation – so soon after what was supposed to have been a new era of democracy, peace, and unity after the end of the Cold War. Furthermore, both sides seem to be convinced that they are right, that it is the responsibility of the other to change its ways first, and that time is on their side. Status quo is deteriorating, therefore not acceptable. The current situation is potentially dangerous and unsustainable. The leaderships of Europe need to take responsibility. We know from history that a continuation along this trajectory has led to war. ➕ More information on the COVID-19 measures we took to ensure the safety of our guests is available here: https://bit.ly/336f6fd ? Habsburg stage - Day 2, 10.20 - 11.10 Emerging technological innovations within today’s most cutting-edge research and development programs are changing the landscape of warfare. New avenues to wage war, in-theatre and online, through quantum computing and an arsenal of super-weapons are altering the distribution of military power and the subsequent ordering of international relations. Consequently, the impact of this convergence on soldiers, strategies, policies, procurement, industry, as well as operations cannot be understated. As operational domains and their accompanying challenges continue to evolve, building standardized rules of engagement and credible de-escalation mechanisms will be imperative for avoiding mutually assured destruction and ensuring a stable security architecture. How should international governance structures approach the regulation and oversight of new technologies per the existing international Laws of Armed Conflict? What role will supercomputers like IBM’s Summit play in developing vaccines during a pandemic or AI-targeted algorithms during a conflict? What risks to stability are posed by the monopolization of certain super-technologies like nanotechnology? Habsburg stage - Day 2, 12.50 - 13.50 After a decade of arduous economic recovery, the global economy has been brought to its knees by the COVID-19 pandemic, disrupting global value chains and paralyzing trade. There were plenty of warning signs prior to the pandemic. In the domestic arena, corporate and sovereign debt levels soared while manufacturing stagnated. On the international level, protectionism, trade wars, unresolved WTO disputes, and a worldwide inward turn to nationalism posed serious risks and demonstrated the potential for reversing decades of progress. The pandemic did not merely shutter businesses, paralyze supply chains, and stall trade. It also exacerbated pre-existing weaknesses, setting the stage for one of the worst economic collapses in modern history. While policymakers have responded swiftly, including taking radical measures to help prevent the total crumbling of the global economy, their efforts can only be sustained for so long and also give rise to a host of new challenges. What can be done to re-energize the global economy, including managing skyrocketing debt levels? What lessons does the pandemic offer for future preparedness and resilience of the global economy, and how does it inform the design of international supply chains? In times when turning inwards and the notion of strategic sovereignty have gained prominence as risk-mitigating strategies, how can free trade become a part of the solution again? Speakers: Amb. Alan Wolff, Deputy Director-General, World Trade Organization, Geneva Pierre Heilbronn, Vice President, Policy and Partnerships, European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, London Marion Jansen, Trade and Agriculture Director, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Paris Sir Paul Collier, Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, Director of the International Growth Centre, Oxford Abraham Liu, Chief Representative Officer to the EU Institutions, Huawei, Brussels Led by: Vazil Hudák, EU Envoy for SMEs, European Commission, Brussels ? Habsburg stage - Day 2, 13.50 - 14.50 Our personal data is being mined for economic gain by private companies, which raises questions about who owns it and what they can do with it. Simultaneously, data is increasingly being viewed as a resource for states seeking an economic and strategic advantage over their rivals. German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently asserted that it is time for Europe to wrestle control of European data from their US and Asian counterparts. German Minister, Peter Altmaier, is spearheading GAIA-X as a way to counterbalance what he views as strategic and economic advantages derived from Chinese and US companies owning the most considerable portion of cloud services in the world. As data enters the great power competition domain, how can we balance a state’s legitimate economic and security concerns without sacrificing the free flow of cross-border data channels? What impact will the new scramble for data have on existing trade and geo-economic conflicts? Should Europe’s ambitions go beyond data sovereignty towards AI sovereignty*? * AI sovereignty = access to the most advanced AI-enabling technologies and data on a global level, applied according to European rules and values, without being dependent on foreign actors Speakers: Henri Verdier, Ambassador for Digital Affairs, Government of the French Republic Cameron Kerry, Ann R. and Andrew H. Habsburg stage - Day 2, 15.45 - 16.50 At present there appear to be at least two competing global systems that threaten to split the world in two: the rules-based liberal order and the state-led capitalist model put forth by China. This split revealed itself in the lack of a coordinated global response to COVID-19. Rather than harness the power of international cooperation, nation-states have used the crisis to further their geopolitical ambitions causing a further divide among global powers. The distribution of global power and the way it is projected has long changed. Will the U.S. power continue to decline? How does China manifest its global ambition and how will it change the world? Can the EU develop a power centre that is distinct from both the U.S. and China? What role can other countries play? What responsibilities come with global power? Habsburg stage - Day 2, 17.00 - 18.00 The COVID-19 pandemic and actions taken to protect citizens have intensified the growing trend of “my country first,” multilateralism second. While border closures and restrictive security measures have quickly become the priority over joint solutions and coordinated action, governments enjoy increased trust from citizens. In democracies with vulnerable institutions or in those that displayed illiberal tendencies prior to the crisis, such power intensification can be an easy accelerator on the path towards further estrangement from the very founding principles of liberal democracy – notably the rule of law and equal protection of rights and freedoms. At the same time, the trend of de-liberalisation should be recognised as voters keep repeatedly choosing the conservative, nationalist, or populist leaders. Is this trend a natural expression of a need for change or a threat to democracy as we know it? How should international institutions react to such developments in their member states? Will this have any effect on transatlantic cooperation? What impact will social media have on democracy? In this complex world of multiple crises, Turkey, a NATO and G20 member as well as an EU candidate, identified its foreign policy as enterprising and humanitarian and emerged as a pivotal anchor in a volatile neighbourhood. Maria Theresia stage - Day 2, 11.30 - 12.50 A Stronger Europe in the World – one of the top priorities of the Von der Leyen Commission. How will this agenda play out after the COVID-19 crisis? The Commission’s manifesto also pledged to promote “responsible global leadership” – a duty that seems to be widely ignored by other influencers of the rules-based international order, including the US and China. Has the time come for Europe to become a truly global leader? For some time now, the EU has worked to expand its influence beyond European borders. Despite the EU’s lofty goals and continued efforts, it is often criticized for being slow, ineffective, and compromised with regard to its international actions. Will this change as the EU faces the largest crisis since its creation? What are the building blocks of the European way of leadership? What will be the legacy of the German Council presidency, and how might this contribute to the EU’s growing international role? Will the EU live up to the expectations of global onlookers and address the far-reaching risks that have been created and exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic? Keynote speech by: H.E. The crisis underlined the region’s vulnerability to influence from other global powers and exposed the fragility of regional political systems. For Ukraine, which has been resisting military aggression from the Russian Federation (including the occupation of Crimea) while simultaneously enduring difficult a domestic transformation, the threat of the novel coronavirus has proven extremely challenging. Could this crisis be used by the Ukrainian national government to regain citizens’ trust, or will it further deepen political polarization? Maria Theresia stage - Day 1, 15.45 - 16.50 The role and strength of cities in the 21st century not only relates to economic opportunity and prosperity but, increasingly, these issues are an expression of democratic values. The attitudes and voting preferences of those living in modern cities prove the trend. According to GLOBSEC research, people in the capitals of Czechia, Hungary, and Slovakia prefer liberal democracy to autocracy more than in other regions. In December 2019, the V4 Mayors, all elected as advocates for progressive politics and liberal democracy principles, formed a progressive value-based Pact of Free Cities. Among other goals, this alliance argues for more direct funding for cities to increase efficiency and progress in climate action and innovation, policy areas that often remain stuck amid debates within national governments. What are the goals and objectives of the Free Cities Pact, and how will they be accomplished? Can they pave the way for more robust national policies? 19 Oct 2020
GLOBSEC
Habsburg stage - Day 1, 14.00 - 14.45 While COVID-19 has caused delays in 5G implementation, the crisis also underscored the importance of its swift and effective deployment. Business leaders and scientists from the G20 member states have voiced the urgent need to improve digital infrastructure in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting that 5G is key to future economic recovery. How can policymakers overcome procedural roadblocks and resistant stakeholders and allow 5G to play a significant role in the post-pandemic recovery? Speakers: Heli Tiirma-Klaar, Ambassador-at-Large for Cyber Security, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Tallin Lise Fuhr, Director General, European Telecommunications Network Operators, Brussels Joyce Hakmeh, Senior Research Fellow, International Security Programme; Co-Editor, Journal of Cyber Policy, Chatham House, London Anthony Whelan, Digital Advisor to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Brussels Ulf Pehrsson, Head of Government & Industry Relations of Ericsson Led by: Eline Chivot, Senior Policy Analyst, Centre for Data Innovation, Brussels ? 19 Oct 2020
GLOBSEC
Habsburg stage - Day 1, 17.00 - 17.45 As leaders prepare massive stimulus packages to stabilize their battered economies, consensus over a green, resilient, and inclusive recovery is becoming mainstream rhetoric. Indeed, several projects can deliver the dual objective of economic recovery with jobs and green growth, but several struggling fossil-intensive industries employ millions and cannot change overnight. Investment across the energy sector will fall, and the International Energy Agency expects global growth in new renewable energy capacity to slow for the first time in two decades. Somehow, the immediate economic rescue will need to be balanced with the Paris Agreement’s longer-term objectives and sustainable development goals, including the bedrocks of a clean economy and societal transitions. What is the UN doing to maintain a sense of climate urgency during this critical recovery period in the latter half of 2020? How will COVID-19 affect long-term climate policies that remain under development or have been wholly upended? What are the expectations for COP 26 in 2021? How will the guidelines and principles of green recovery be shared to identify sustainable investments? Speakers: H.E. Mark A.G. Brantley, Premier of Nevis and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation for St. Kitts and Nevis Martin Hojsík, Member of European Parliament, Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Rachel Kyte, Dean, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, Medford, MA Led by: Tom Nuttall, Berlin Bureau Chief, The Economist, Berlin ? #GLOBSEC2020 Bratislava Forum: U.S. Elections Countdown. What Does It Mean for Europe?
19 Oct 2020
GLOBSEC
Habsburg stage - Day 1, 17.50 - 18.20 The 2020 presidential elections are taking place during a time of extreme partisan tension and political unrest in the United States, in part fueled by President Trump’s polarizing policies for addressing the ongoing pandemic, racial inequality, and an empty Supreme Court seat. The foreign policy realm will also bring unique challenges for the next US president, who will have to make strategic decisions that will likely reshape the transatlantic relationship, for better or worse. Some predict that Biden’s strategy will focus on repairing and revitalizing the US’s relationship with EU partners even though as Vice President, he supported Obama’s agenda for turning Eastward. On the other hand, President Trump has made his distaste for multilateralism abundantly clear by withdrawing from key international agreements and organizations. However, it is possible that Trump’s antagonistic policies toward the EU will abate once he has secured a second term, especially if his criticism of European leadership is primarily motivated by a desire to mobilize domestic support. Regardless of the outcome, the upcoming US elections will have a profound effect on Europe. From security to trade, from human rights to multilateralism or climate change, the United States and Europe will eventually need to find a way of renewing their relationship after November. What has each candidate proposed for his foreign policy agenda in Europe? If elected, would Trump maintain the status quo and continue to alienate EU partners? What can be learned about Biden’s potential strategy for Europe from his tenure as Vice President? Which EU members will be most affected by a reorientation of US policy in Europe? How will the US-CEE relationship look like after November elections? Speakers: Joe Pounder, CEO, Bullpen Strategy Group, Washington D.C. Torrey Taussig, Research Director, Project on Europe and the Transatlantic Relationship, Harvard Kennedy School, Cambridge, MA Led by: Alex Martin, Head of Brussels Office, GLOBSEC, Brussels ? GLOBSEC
Habsburg stage - Day 1, 15.55 - 16.55 While the worst of the global COVID-19 pandemic seems to be over, its long-term implications for our societies’ stability and safety will reverberate much longer. Regardless of the actual situation on the ground, effective communication of policy narratives to domestic and foreign audiences will be crucial in any future conflicts or crises. The ability to see patterns and connections between seemingly isolated incidents, that are actually elements of broader hybrid threats strategies, will be of equal importance. The COVID-19 crisis might be turned into an impetus for reforming EU and NATO’s strategic communication efforts and threat perception mechanisms, integrating them much more with their core activities. How should democratic societies react to a rapidly shifting threat horizon and the increasingly difficult task of assigning attribution to attackers? What should be done to boost EU and NATO capacities to detect and deter hybrid threats? How should strategic communication be mainstreamed into a wider range of modern foreign and security policy measures? Speakers: Lea Gabrielle, Special Envoy and Coordinator of the Global Engagement Center, Washington, D.C. Veka Modebadze, Director, Strategic Communications Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Tbilisi Teija Tiilikainen, Director, European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats, Helsinki Katarína Klingová, Senior Research Fellow, Democracy & Resilience, GLOBSEC, Bratislava Jyun-Yi Lee, Associate Researcher, Institute for National Defense and Security Research, Taipei Led by: Annabelle Chapman, Freelance Journalist, Warsaw ? A joint event series by Friedrich Naumann Foundation Europe & ALDE Party 05.03.20 Discussion with Martin Hojsík, MEP, Progresívne Slovensko Moderator: Lucia Klestincova, Policy Advisor, European Commission About the Event: Citizens in Slovakia will head to the polls on 29 February. At the moment, there are multiple parties across the political spectrum advocating for change in Slovakia, but exactly what that change looks like will depend on voters. The current political climate in Slovakia is tense as the country becomes increasingly divided between pro-European progressives and the far-right. Cases of corruption over the years have created tension in the country, and this will certainly be on voter’s minds as they head to the polls at the end of the week. Progresívne Slovensko is a liberal pro-European party that advocates for areas such as equality, a just society, and sustainability. Last year, Progresivne Slovensko’s Zuzana Čaputová became the country’s first female head of state and rose to victory after fighting against corruption and advocating for justice after the death of journalist Ján Kuciak. Which reforms do Slovak Liberals propose for the upcoming years? Which political partners are they ready to work with? How will issues such as corruption and the rule of law influence voter’s choice? Our next Liberal Breakfast aims to shed light on these and many other questions, so join us for a discussion with our distinguished speaker!
